Eddy, you can't get better than K-Lee's advice given he actually skates ditches and those ditches in particular. AND, he's a super nice guy.
But I have a question about the ditches for an upcoming trip too Kaylee. What kind of socks should I wear? Fast, light ones or the stiffer, wool ones?

Eddy....I have a PPS Ditch Killer, and would also recommend if I were in the market....the Pressure Drop PD42. Especially, if you like black. I haven't had the luxury of getting to the ditches, yet. These medium-long boards also work in certain faster than average skateparks. From what I hear about the "Bear", I would use a strong, STIFF speedboard. I'm looking to replace my flexy "Hill Killer" with something stiffer, even though it might work there. A lot of guys seem to like the Sector 9 Bomb Hills topmount design. Hope it helps.

Eddy, What constitutes a good ditch board totally depends on your riding style and which ditches you plan to ride. Some people like to session ditches, mini-ramp style. Those people get by with big pool-style boards just fine. Others like to cruise Indian School. You can do that on anything from a shortboard up to a supertanker, but most people use pintail-type boards, others prefer longer boards with kicktails. Some people like to charge the BEAR, and for that I recommend a speedboard or supertanker. Personally, I've been really enjoying my 35" Earthwing Drifter lately. My buddy has one of those longer Earthwings and really likes that, with Paris trucks and Flywheels. But Comet Proflexes in all lengths have served me well in the past, also.
So, the question remains, do you like to session parking blocks, cruise the concrete waves, charge for speed, or perhaps a little bit of all three?
I always thought a Pavel would do really well in these ditches ;)!
In a nutshell, ride what you'd normally feel comfortable on while carving a medium hill. It's all about personal choice. Wheels and trucks are way more important than decks, to be honest. I've even ridden mini-decks and had lots of fun. If you have good soft wheels and nice carvy trucks (which it sounds like you do), then you could bolt those on a 2x4 and have a blast in these ditches, no kidding.

If thats the same "78 ditch" near Bernardsville, NJ then all I can say is wow. I skated thsat thing in the 70s before the highway went all the way through Summit. Glad to hear it still gets sessioned, though it is disappointing to hear that the neighbors suck.

just saying what i've heard living in the neighborhood. In the plans also they plan on placing large rocks in the already natural part of the stream. Talk about a great ecological project. No one can explain county goverment actions. I would be willing to fence it and make it a park just to keep the place alive. I don't really skate alot anywhere else but I skate a ton down there and will never forget the hours logged there hopefully i'll get plenty more in.

I thought the pot spring ditch was no longer part of balt. co. drainage system. the unskateable (naturalized?) ditch 50 yards or so further down pot spring has water continuously running through it. I always thought that it handled the main run off from the surrounding neighborhoods and the skate ditch really only came into use during heavy heavy rains. I have never, in all my years, seen a work crew get into it, seen any county repairs made to it, or noticed a large build up of debris and sticks from serious waterflow. I'd hate to see baltimore's only real ditch get jackhammered in an effort to naturalize an already naturalized area.

We fought the same stuff here with a local ditch. It's 1 of 3 ditches I know of in this state [NC] to ride. Anyway, we were not on anyone's property, and showed no disregard for our environ. Cops still got called. We set up a meeting with a couple of the flustered locals and spoke to them about what we were doing there, the fact that we cleaned trash off the roadside when we were there, no spray paint, no drugs, no BS, just skateboarding. We now have our access and the neighbors know that the place is being skated by responsible people that actually give a crap. Basically, we knocked on doors and asked if they would like to talk about the local skateboarding issue and if there could be a middle-ground. We told them about our helping local kids in the community, and you should have seen the reaction when we told them what we all do for a living!(engineer, public school teacher, social worker) Nyway, maybe, just maybe, there is a middle-ground that you can reach with these people. One thing that we suggested [and didn't have to do] was that we would put up a wooden fence, or plant bamboo along the ditch to "clean up the view". Good luck, I hope you don't lose your spot forever.

Oh man thats a bummer Diggler. We used to session that place in the late 80's all the time. Great memories. Got some old pics of it up on the other longboard site. I would place a letter in their mailbox saying that you will see them in court if the cops get involved again.
