quiver, huh?
On 5/2/2003 richard marnhout wrote in from (198.81.nnn.nnn)

my old quiver--which i wish to the lord that i had hung onto--- was as follows:
a 29" z-flex jay adams with bennets and road rider 4's(later o.j's) for bank and ditch work.

a 31" by 9" birch sabre (anyone remember tay hunt?) with tracker fulls and BLUE kryptos (green was faster, but the blue ones gripped better in slick pools)

and finally a fibreflex-non-cutaway, with acs trucks(they were fragile, but turned REALLY QUICKLY) and road rider 6's for slalom.

i have always believed, and the dogtown movie bore out , that the key to the low pivotal, style was a narrow board and narrow trucks with a relatively high pivot point. plus, this was what jay used and who was i to argue with my hero! L.O.L.

Two boards is easy:

Bullog Sacred Heart 32x10, Tracker 184s, 29a/65mm No Skoolz.
Fibreflex Pintail, Seismic/Indy combo and Flashbacks or Flywheels.

The third board is hard, some days it's my newschoolish shaped 33x9 with it's rock hard Rictas, Others it's my Dregs Pool Service or my slalom board or...

My current 3 favorite boards...(L-R) Gravity 39" with Indy 156s and Gravity Street Gs for pub cruising, hills and banks, BullDog Shogo with Indy 166s and Gravity Street Gs for transition both vert and semi-vert, and an ICK with Tracker RTX and a TTC featuring Turner Avalons for the killer old man sport of slalom.

Since I'm more into Tight Slalom, my boards are shorter.
I would go with a:

1. Ick Evans Fat Tail - Indy offsets/RT-X, Oust mach7, Stingers
2. Roe - Unlimited RT-S/X combo Oust, Avalons
3. Pocket Pistol - TS Hybrid, RT-X -Offset, Oust, Avalons
4. And of course out of all the Roes, Icks, Turners, ect. ive tried... I still love my Bahne Black Hill with the carbon fiber layer on the bottom, FullTrack/RT-S Abec 11 Stingers

Mike Moore - I heard the same expression said this way, "you can't ride two horses with one ass"

All my boards are homemade.... my ultimate quiver is always changing as I learn and improve my building techniques.

Oops, DelMar should have read,TS and Banked Slalom not GS.

My retired Turner, fulls and Krypto's, from success in the 80's and standing in the Gates at the Battle of Bay, FCR race #1 2002, ready for it's first race after refinishing it in Canadian red. The words coming over the loundspeaker as to Bobby Turner's passing earlier in the morning. I had to give it it's retirement race.

Roe, Botttle Rocket, Tracker TX and either Turner or Abec 11 wheels dpepending on the course.

The Third will have to wait until after this years Worlds in Morro Bay.

A wise Canadian once told me "Your ass can only be on one horse at a time." The ultimate quiver? I'm still building it. The board I had that I miss the most was a red Zorlac John Gibson with black Tracker Sixtrucks and gray Rat Bones, GMN bearings. If anyone has one they'd like to part with...I'm interested.

Pro Slalom Race??

"When was the last True Proffessional race in California. The last one I remember was in '82."

The last Pro Slalom Race in California was a few weeks ago in Paso Robles, then but a few weeks before that in Lake Elsinore. According to the worlds greatest international pro slalom racer John Gilmour these were actually just begineer races, Is that why you didnt refer to them as being pro?

Slalom ended?
On 5/2/2003 CKnuck wrote in from (66.185.nnn.nnn)

I guess this question would have to be broken up into Countries and Levels of competitions.

When was the last True Proffessional race in California. The last one I remember was in '82. There were probalbly others. The one I refer to was part of the "Rusty Haris series" at Delmar. There was a Tight and GS. Evans won the Tight beating out Brian Martin. I don't recall who won the Banked Slalom. There was also one in 1990.

Canada held National, International and hosted World Championships from '77 I think until 1990. There were some years where competitions were not held. Slalom was one of several skateboard disciplines included in these contests.

We know the europeans held several different national and European competitions they could add the correct data from the 80's and 90's.

California had C.A.S.L. wich usally held Slalom competitions in it's calendar of events. I don't know when it stopped if it did.

So did it cease to exist or did it just stopped to be sponsored, promoted and or competed in. Some of us never quit taking out cones to run. It was just a matter of availability of events.

Please fill in the blanks.

I can only listen to punk rock while skating when I'm on my freestyle board, or I'm doing alot of sliding. I can't listen to new punk rock, its way to weak to really get charged up. Usually I like DRI, Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, Fear, Agnostic Front, Iron Cross, Sick of It All, ect....

Hey Geezer are you a fan of Iron Cross? I know they used to play a million shows a year with SOA and Minor Threat have you ever seen them?

Thanks alot for putting out such a great magazine Michael. Everyone seems real stoked on CW! I always bring them to shops and flow them to my customers. CW has really helped Skaterbuilt to get the good word out bigtime. I commend you and your staff for your efforts. I'm currently working on a "Flying Carrasco Bros." article as well as a Kelly Bellmar Profile which I will submit when completed. This is the new era of skateboarding-the best time ever to be a skater. New companies, products, and mags, etc....Stoked! Thanks CW!

Skateparks: Generally don't listen to stuff at the parks due to the distractive nature (gotta keep a sharp ear out for the incomings), but I like to sing along to the Chili Peppers on my way to/from the parks.

Longboarding: Classical (although, again, I rarely listen unless I'm skating in an area that I know is void of traffic).

Slalom: Haven't tried music to it (yet).

Bought a neat little (sub-pocket sized) MP3 player last xmas just for these purposes, but haven't used it much.

Hybrid Street/Freestyle or something else next
On 5/2/2003 G7enn wrote in from (212.35.nnn.nnn)

My eight year old son Jack is now a pretty good skater, I have got to the point where I probably have to admit he's better than me, at least in the skatepark. My influence and watching the Dogtown movie a few times means there is a certain 'oldschool' element to his skating. He's ollieing over the funbox or ollie-180ing from a small quarter to the flat bank next to it and failing to make kickflips on flat like the other newschoolers but he's also really into slides. He's so flexible that he's really comfortable skating low, he can pull rail grab berts (powerslides?, I dunno) almost anywhere, on the flat and even on the tallest ramp (6', near vert, it's a small park) with a revert to 360. He also does another slide where he backside carves the wide ramp at a decent speed, points his nose up the ramp while putting his front hand down, slides a fair distance sideways and rolls out fakie.

I was standing watching him with a 15-16 year old newschooler who said, as older kids often do "he's going to be such a good skater when he's older" only this time he added "he'll also be at an advantage in a few years when it all goes back to oldschool".

The guy who said this is a pretty good skater himself, he can ollie almost three feet, 'hardflip' on the flatbanks and pull a variety of tedious boardslides and grinds on the rampless bits of the park I have no use for.

Him and his friends then spent five minutes trying to duplicate Jack's 'carve to revert' slide, it was funny to watch, none of them had the slightest idea about skating low and were very tentatively trying to get that hand down. One of them got it working on a flatbank while standing almost straight up. Quite impressive but not the same thing and ugly as hell to watch.

I have no idea where his prediction of the 'return of oldschool' came from but I think with the right inspiration from old guys AND younger kids who have fun while actually staying on their boards, the mentality of spending two hours not landing a kickflip might just melt away, even if the main skateboard industry doesn't want it to.

it was lovely to see, and i commented that i thought that the next wave of street would blend old school ballet freestyle with new skool. he AGREED with me and said that a lot of kids were trying old stuff and discovering that it was just as difficult as new skool

Slalom
On 5/1/2003 Jack wrote in from (207.114.nnn.nnn)

Night rally's in Laguna Beach...1962 or 1963. Joey Cabell was styling. He later went on to start the Chart House restaurant chain. Where were his first two restaurants located and why?

First Pro Race - see Arab's post on the slalom forum.

My first slalom race was the Bahne-Cadillac Del Mar Nationals in 1975. When I saw the ad for the Ocean Festival in Surfer Magazine, I knew I had to go. We practiced slalom by borrowing plastic milk crates from the local grocery store and using them as cones on course we set on a sidewalk. Imagine our surprise when we showed up and saw a "wooden" hill.

Driving down to the event we kept speculating what freestyle might be. Our best guess was that youu would skate down a hill doing spinners, walking the board and handstands. Little did we know.
