Rene - What's in Osteo-bi-flex?
Brian - Aleve is the over-the-counter version of Naprosin. Both are fancy names for naproxen sodium, available as a generic.
Glucosamine-chondroitin is the generic name of that "dietary supplement". According to my research, the best dosage is 1500 mg of glucosamine, 1200 mg of chondroitin per day. The pills are usually formulated to include both in that ratio. Best value I have found is "Spring Valley" brand at Wal-Mart, double-strength (need 3 tabs a day) is about $17 for a 40-day supply. Everything I read said there is evidence this stuff works, but not conclusive proof yet; at any rate there is no known harm so most sources even if they wouldn't out-and-out recommend it said there is no harm in trying it. I do notice a difference, especially if I stop taking it for a few days (then I notice a BAD difference).
Brady has a line on a cheaper supply, but I can never remember what it is...maybe he'll chime in. Anyone else have a cheaper supply than $17 for 40 days?

Just got done practicing at lunch with Hut, Miko and Matt. This writer from our local paper has been interviewing me for a skate piece, he came out to watch. I talked to him about your magazine, showed it to him and he was stoked. I ended up giving it to him. I never even got to read it yet. But it's for the good of the industry right. Besides that I know my subscription is on it's way.

It does not bother me one bit when I read cuss words but as a rep that talks to shops about carrying products I rep, including Concrete Wave, it is an easier sell. A lot of shops in the south and midwest cater to parents more than the kids, due to who's holding the wallet. I guess it might depend on what area of the country you are in. I know throughout Texas and Oklahoma, a lot of parents cringe at board graphics alone. There is a fine line to walk depending upon to whom you want to market. And there is plenty of cussing in TRANSWORLD.

Michael -- Issue #5 looks great.
Brother Rene journeyed to Tracker on Friday and brought back a supply just in time for us to throw a stack in our bag and head to the airport for SF. At first glance -- I was impressd by the overall quality look and once I got a chance to start reading it on the plane I was convinced this is the best issue yet. Content is really interesting and well presented.
As Judi pointed out -- everybody was immediately absorbed when we broke out the mags while waiting for the rain to finally stop on Sunday -- and I had to turn people away when my supply ran out. Props to you and to all those contributing. Now there are two skate mags I look forward to reading cover to cover. ;)

it's only 10:25 am here in Toronto, but you have made my day.
this is PRECISELY the kind of reaction I am trying to forment....something different, something that captures the true spirit of skateboarding.
We are only HALF way there...half way there in terms of size and HALF way there in terms of impact...
My vision is to produce a magazine that is DRIPPING with quality...we continue to tinker and work on the bugs...thanks for your kind words...just you wait til you see what is coming down the pike...

We strive not to put anything gratuitous in the magazine. If however, an individual uses language others may find offensive, it would be dishonest and wrong for us to censor that. I'm not afraid of the "f-bomb", doesn't offend me. Is it right for children? Not in my opinion. Are we every child's parent? Hardly. My point is, if you are handing anything to your child without first screening it, you are at fault. Read the mag first, pass it on to your kids steering them past anything you don't want them to see. We are not trying to make parent's jobs more difficult, and again, we do not use questionable language just for the novelty of doing so. Whenever used, it is in context with the given subject.*

Your goal was to make a magazine similar to that of Surfers Journal. Which includes beautiful imagery, articles with substance, a nice feel, nice paper, perfect bound, but from a skaters view point not a surfers. I think you are doing a great job, keep it up.
By day I art direct for the one the leading brands in both bike and snow. If I listened to each person that had an opinion every helmet would be white, black and blue. You do it for the passion and love of the sport it will all come together.
On Sunday when Maria passed the newest issue out at the SF Gravity slalom race it reminded me of when Skateboarder issues showed up at NHS. Everyone quiet, sitting around absorbing the different photo’s, turning each page with anticipation. Now that’s success. Don’t turn it white bread please. I’m saving my copies for my kids who are to young to read and it would be nice if they could really feel the tone of what the sport was truly like when these issues came out.
The editors of the other mags are too narrowly focused by the time they figure it out your magazine will have kicked there butt. Keep the cussing in it’s just part of our culture.

small type...yep... no question the deathbox piece was small type...but, they had a lot to say...
glad people like the photos.
I am showing all types of skateboarding. I figure the 14 foot ollie over the stairs is already being done to death in other mags. I have put in quite a bit of vert, street, park, ditch, etc.
It's not an old school mag....it's a mag that is 100% skateboarding (not a narrow vision of just ollie based tricks)

Cuss words I can handle. Not that they are needed but it`s part of life. The real bitch was I had to go get my reading glasses, AND THEN A MAGNIFYING GLASS!
I showede the mag to some late 30ish kids at OLLiewood last nite and one vommented...it`s an oldschool mag. Well, yes, there were some classic photos in it. But did I not recall you saying you wanted to show all sides of skating on the mag Micharl? Where`s the dude doing the 14 step rail?
Still though, great mag, Neautiful pics but I WANNA READ SOMETIN. heyh heh !!!

knees - mine are shot....when it rains...ouch! I know this might sound odd, but I actually have had some success with magnets...
back issues...wow, this is becoming a very interesting ISSUE... the main thing is that I have blown through all my stash of back issues. I don't have any more. The website needs to be updated. If you can find back issues from England (or from wherever) BUY 'EM!
There are no more preview issues left either. Sorry about this. When you see Vol 1 No 5 on the stands at Barnes and Noble and Hastings my advice is to buy it...we are pretty well down to one box here at CW headquarters.
Cussin' in the mag...we started with the f word spelled out in full. I moved to f**k since I realized a lot of people reading the mag were under the age 11. I know most of these kids swear like sailors, but I wanted to be able to hand a mag to a kid and not have their parents FREAK. I think CW is one of the only magazines in the world that appeals to folks under 12 and over 21!

www.lushlongboards.com have issues 2,3,4, and of course 5 for online ordering. UK based but they are really on the ball. Check their site out. They found that many customers wanted back issues, as CW doesnt 'date'. They sold out of #3, then #2 and luckily re-ordered before all the UK ones had gone.
Yesterday I took a call from someone looking for #1 and 'minus 1' (the ILB teaser). He was dead chuffed I had a couple, with the poster.
If you want a complete set, better get on the case quickly.

i really don't understand why some people are getting so upset about the use of cuss words in CW. if you don't like the cussing, go read transworld, there pretty trippy and weak. it's just a word, no more, no less, it's not like there dropping the f-bomb in every other sentence. ever since the planets aligned and duane peters, steve olson, and steve alba were all on the same team skateboarding has been pretty punk rock and that just the way things are. thrasher has always had cussing in it and nobodies crying about it, they just don't buy the magazine. if your not down with the language, don't by the mag, no one's holding a gun to your head and forcing you too order a subscription. don't like it, don't buy it, simple as that. why should a whole magazine change the way they do things just to please a couple of people who disaprove, that's outrageous. what i'm trying to say is, GET OVER IT.

What are the generics for those two things you mentioned? Since my femur surgery, my knee has gotten better, but it will ache for days at a time, plus the swelling is horrible. I don't want to get my knee drained, or go through another surgery to replace my knee just yet. But i need something to get me through. While the doc was operating on my leg, he said I have lots of damage under my knee cap, which gives it a rough edge and causes alot of wear to the bones under the cap. I think if i get a knee replacement at 21 my skateboarding career is pretty much over.

For pre-dosing and post-riding pain, I found Aleve to be more effective than Advil and the like.
The real fix, for me anyway, was glucosamine/chondroitin. Saw a difference in my knees within about 2 weeks of starting it, and I can tell when I've slacked off for a few days. Works for me...try it, it might work for you.
