I will firmly pledge there will be no gratuitous display of butt cracks in Concrete Wave.

lost issue, blue calendar, where are we going?
On 5/10/2003 michael brooke wrote in from (209.29.nnn.nnn)

the vol 1 no 0 was a test run inside an international longboarder mag (RIP)

the blue calendar was a complete screw up by my printer...1000 had April 31....and November 31...

as a famous Canadian once said "the medium is the message"
(free video to anyone who can name who this)

now you are starting to understand why the magazine is created the way it is...less is more... my hope is that you can in a small way explain to folks who "don't get it" what all the fuss is about...

Mass Marketed new school vanilla ice cream
On 5/10/2003 Scott wrote in from (12.87.nnn.nnn)

Reading down the page a bit Chris Olden had a good point.
Back when Skateboarder Magazine was out. We all dreamed of riding in the same spots as our hero's. I would have killed to be able to ride Mt. Baldy, or the dog bowl or the nukeland pipes etc etc.
But today what do kids have. "I want to grind that rail at the school on the corner that I saw mr baggy pants grind." It just doesn't do it. There isn't the glamour, the excitement.
But now, Upland is back, I want to go there. Louisville, I want to go there too. Mt. Baldy is still around, someday. Skatelab, Skatopia, etc etc.
I guess my point is... A magazine takes you somewhere away from where you are at the moment. Skateboarder Magazine and Surfer Magazine in the 70's took me to those places I could only dream about. Concrete Wave is taking me back there.
Thanks Michael and all the CW staff.

But who else got the natty red folding plastic CW calendar?

I heard that some people from the US bought some CWs from Lush Longboards in the UK, isnt it funny to think that these mags have crossed the Atlantic twice?

For some reason, I wouldn't have a problem with my kids (my theoretical kids...worked on 'em again last night) seeing ads from someone like s#@!Bird as long as the magazine's content wasn't filled with profanity ("Well, son, some people just need to name things with bad names....you can ride one when when you're 18....come here, did I ever tell you about punk rock?...). Anyway, I find Arab's post really admirable; it sort of illustrates exactly what I'm trying to get across.

Maybe to put it another way...how are we ever going to break the old "skateboarding = criminal juveniles" association unless we consciously don't feed into it?

Here's a cool thought...MM has thoroughly piqued my curiosity with the idea of "Old Pro's Tales". I wanna see it! Maybe the really juicy bits could be placed online somewhere, a la "See our website for the habanero-hot stories too spicy for B&N and your kids." But thenI guess you'd have to have a password-protected section of the website. Man, when DID we turn into our parents? I yelled at some neighborhood kids the other night to turn on the lights on their golf cart they were driving around. I sounded just like my old man.

Grey pubes...I found my first (and so far only) one on...get this...my honeymoon!!!! I will withhold further comment.

CW #5
On 5/10/2003 Nick wrote in from (66.87.nnn.nnn)

We went so far down this profanity road (and I think we've reached the end of it), that the positive comments I (and a collective we) have made have gotten lost. Let me rectify that somewhat.

Michael, the Lance Smith photo spread was art. Everything about it was perfection. You (CW staff) do a beautiful job like that on my articles and I'll have at least one submission for you per issue in perpetuity.

First up is a series with great skaters from the 60's, starting with Pat McGee (who still skates, BTW).

from swearing to gray pubes....
On 5/10/2003 michael brooke wrote in from (209.29.nnn.nnn)

Amazing....truly amazing

I can't believe we've gone all the way from swearing to gray pubes...

that is certainly one of the joys of the internet. Let me state for the record that I eagerly read all your posts and the ideas that are coming out of this forum transcend a lot more than just CW...

It's weird, but for some reason I feel very comfortable in publishing a magazine that affects both the new generation (under 12) of skaters and the older generation of skaters (over 20)...there are very few magazines that appeal to two distinctly different demographics.

Sandwiched in the middle of course are the 13 to 19 year olds...I think they'll eventually come around.

Stubbs - thanks for your kind words - happy birthday to your kid too!

Off to fix a drainpipe, clean out the garage, write and skate....but not necessarily in that order!

from static to reality--skateboarder mag.
On 5/9/2003 richard marnhout wrote in from (198.81.nnn.nnn)

you see the shots; jay-boy whipping off a frontside grind with a look of casual contempt. or jim muir trying an impossibly savage snap, his eyes glued to the cope.
and somtimes, we could get the moves down.
but the thing that we all worked the hardest at, but could only rarely achieve, was the look in their eyes; the ability to sneer at the dangerous ,and laugh at the impossible.

re:mags influence/ then & now
On 5/9/2003 chris olden wrote in from (67.121.nnn.nnn)

howdy,
Well...
back in '75-'78, Skateboarder mag was what I saved my allow-
ance for! There are many things I remember from back then;
a picture of Wally Inouye skating some huge ditch in Hawaii;
Biniak front-siding at Mt.Baldy; Lonnie Toft on his 8-wheeler;
tons of photos of the Z-Boys(even after they weren't); Nukeland
pipes; SIgnal Hill races; Upland, and countless pools.
Skateboarder defined(to me) what skateboarding was, then.

Now, most of the skateboard mags are about the "baggy ass-
crack pants" wearing residents of the "ollie nation". I have pur-
chased about 4 issues of various skateboard mags(not including
Concrete Wave and Juice) since last September. They have all
(with the exception of an issue of transworld that had a Jim Cas-
simus photo article) gone in the garbage. Complete crap.
The skateboard magazines now are like "Cosmopolitan" for the
popsicle stick-riding masses. No style, no soul, no content.
I can turn through an entire issue of "thresher" without seeing
a single picture of someone skating with style. Every picture is
a variation on some "ollie to heel flip to rail slide to gap jump"
ad nauseum.
So, I guess I'm saying that skateboard magazines hold no inter-
est for me and no influence.
But what do I know? I'm old and grouchy. ;^)
Gimme a pig deck with big wheels and I'm happy!
And I'm still waiting to get a Bigfoot...25 years later.
Chris Olden

4 letterwords
On 5/9/2003 Arab wrote in from (24.24.nnn.nnn)

I spent about 3 hours in front of a camera being interviewed for a documentry yesterday, I said not 1 cuss word, why? because when my son sees the movie I dont want him to see his dad cussing. There will be cussing and lots of it I'm sure of that in the movie. he will beable to see it but he wont see his dad using language like that.

I appreciate the fact that NCDSA and CW edit the words to say f#@! and s#@!, It shows they care enough to keep the integrity of the subject at hand but yet mask the word.

On 5/9/2003 Mike Moore wrote in from (66.196.nnn.nnn)

Nick, you know as well as I do that it is forbidden to show public pix of the "Pibbhole", actually now I think it's the "Diet Barqs Hole". But yes you nailed who I was talking about. Dave's products are as good or better than most out there...BUT there's that wee hurdle.

Scott, I couldn't agree more. BUT there's the wee hurdle of our target audience. Ideally we'd love to have everyone of course. I tend to believe we're followed more by the receding hairline set. Most all of us are over 21, and have stories we don't want our kids knowing about. It does get a bit tedious reading about some Team Roadtrip as written by Beavis and Butthead. I doubt we'll ever go there. Part of me would love to print a confessional of legendary pros of days gone by...but the pages would probably combust. So I doubt we'll ever go there either.

All in all it's tough. There's that little bit of skate punk rebel still in me that wants throw the bird to all who disagree...then my 3 year old whacks my 5 year old with a Lincoln Log and I'm brought back to reality.

Swearing
On 5/9/2003 Scott wrote in from (12.87.nnn.nnn)

My take is that if the article is well written and the swearing is not put in just for the sake of swearing then a few words don't bother me. Picking up Thrasher and Transworld their articles are, for the most part, poorly written. (Like I'm any judge, but then again I'm not writing in a mag and getting paid to do so) I find it extremely difficult to even get through one paragraph let alone an entire article. And it appears that the swearing in those mags is for shock value only.
