Imagine a kiss show where the damned opened.... Or vice versa. Right on, 66, Maria. Both bands undiminished by time. Dave Vanian still has those trousers, and Gene Simmons is as handsome as ever...

Yeah -- X is still great after all these years. Had the pleasure of seeing them a few times over the last few years and even got to interview John Doe and Billy Zoom at a House of Blues show in Anaheim. Super cool guys -- much respect. Used to see them at the Starwood and other LA venues early early 80's. Of course, I was only five at the time . . . ;)
Another classic punk pioneer band that still rocks as hard as ever AND is generating NEW material -- The Damned. They are signed to the local OC Nitro label. Imagine my stoke to be granted an interview with the entire band at the start of their promo tour for Grave Disorder! I shamelessly brought some vintage vinyl for autographing by the Captain and Dave to join my signed X vinyl . . .

Saw X a few months ago (in Denver) with a pal who's seen them dozens of times. It was killer! Definitely go see 'em if you get the chance.
I'm seeing The Cramps next week, should be fun.

...Was playing at the 9:30 club in DC in like '82, and I was playing Pac Man at the table machine in the hallway after their soundcheck. I could basically play on a quarter 'til I got bored, and I finished a game, and Exene Cervenka was watching and asked how I played that long, so I asked if she wanted to play a game. She wasn't very good at Pac Man. Billy Zoom would come into the scooter shop I worked at when they came to DC since he was a big Vespa guy. The owner of the shop loved to refer to his wife as "Mrs. Zoom". They're touring now w/ John, Exene, Billy, and DJ. Go see them if they come to where you live, it's worth whatever it costs. X is like the Woody Guthrie of our generation.

is it me, or do you get the feeling that it's 1980/81 all over again?
all this underground and above ground activity, all these new products....sure, the world has changed a lot in 2 decades, but I get this weird vibe that things are following that old french phrase... "Plus y change, plus y la meme chose."
"the more things change, the more they stay the same..."
any comments?

perhaps, if enough people ask for these decks, they will reissue them.
I always wanted one....

I hope to provoke thought and entertain with everything that comes out of the word processor. Like you stated, I am stoked about skateboarding, more now than any other time in my life and hope to bring the view from my eyes to the pages of CW. With summer nearing, I'm sure I'll have plenty of tall Texas tales to tell. WIth the help of GOB, anything is possible. And you need to make it to Texas soon, Michael. Permission pools and numerous ditches await thee!

I have never been to Texas, but I just wanted to go on record to acknowledge the FANTASTIC support and passion of two GREAT Texans - Mike Moore and Greg Stubbs.
Mike is the associate editor of the mag and many know him through his grumpy old bastard character and texas longboarders site. Greg has the same fire as Mike and is dedicated to spreading the revolution. We now have both writing for the magazine and Greg is really excited about the prospects (just like Mike and I!)....
I'd like to offer this forum as a way for folks to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of fellow skaters.
Of course, I could list literally HUNDREDS of folks...and I intend to!
Here's another thing to contemplate. A good pal in the industry tells me decks are going for $12 (manufactured in the US!) It's such a funny paradox that in our world decks etc. are rising in price as the popsicle decks, wheels etc. collapse.
People are willing to pay for quality.
Of course, Concrete Wave will always aim to be of the highest quality but still be less expensive than Transworld or Thrasher (by 4 cents!)
While we have 1/4 the pages, it may take you longer to read CW!! (sorry couldn't resist that one)

i'll tell you what, whomever comes up with a comprehensive line of safety equipment designed for us (or at least chosen intelligently from exsisting products) will win the marbles. i know, i know, a lot of this stuff is already out there, BUT, i know of no shop or company that has collated it into a cogent product line that is designed for skaters. and remember, it's us oldsters who have the money to lay out.

a key point to ponder

most of us have day jobs (myself included)
if you work in an environment that sells a product or service (like many of the folks who visit this site, ride longboards or slalom etc) you know something very vital to the company your work for... what is this?
the hardest thing for a company to generate is a customer. customers are the lifeblood of any company. no customers, no company
the skate industry has ignored a whole bunch of customers (us) for a very long time. why? they were busy looking at present and maximizing their profits...
each year (since 1995 - when I reentered skating bigtime via my first longboard purchase - I have found that our segment of the industry has grown and thrived....sure we are tiny compared to some skate shoe companies.... but things have a way of changing in this environment..
I see a HUGE opportunity over the next 6 to 18 months...many of us have waited patiently for the playing field to tilt in our favor...
those skate shops that are hurting right now are about to learn a lesson in supply and demand....
meanwhile, those shops that recognized that customers come in all shapes and sizes (and have all types of skate needs) will reap some nice benefits.
I live in a town of 3.5 million (toronto) Only ONE shop (hogtown) has gone deep into longboards, pools boards etc. He is doing very very well.
5500 visitors in 3 weeks...thanks for visiting...now tell your friends!

Stores

Brad, those stores are in the US, but its a similar story here in the UK. Its understandable really. The shops that sell kicky flippy boards dont have owners that remember soft wheels. But there is hope. You wait. For a store to stock longboards properly its an investment. Last weekend I sat in the park waiting for some slalomers. Saw 2 new schoolers go by. Well, I heard them first. Then 5 go by on funny bright green wheels, long decks, then another on Avalons. Then a guy went by on a vintage deck with ACS'lite' trucks. I KNEW which store they'd bought them from, it was obvious. When the other stores see potential sales whizz by their door they will be interested.

Brian, if you live in the east (US or UK?) (as the shop's name suggests) you will find that most shops have never heard of ABEC11, like you said, they think it's a kind of bearing that doesn't exist. There isn't one shop in Massachusetts (no, I haven't hit them all)that I have been to that knows about ABEC11...this blows me away with all the advertising Chris has done...they could be making killer sales on a top-notch product if they only knew. I have shown several shops the wheels, they say "those are wicked cool", but never stock them...like you said...tunnel vision.
