The next issue breaks the 100 page barrier...for a reason

In the next issue (NOV) we have a 28 page story.
I am deadly serious.
This is the BIGGEST story ever published on skateboarding in a magazine. In fact it is so big, that I have had to add 8 additional pages. These are pages that normally would be 40% ad space (so around 3 pages of ads and 5 pages of editorial). Not this time...it's 28 pages of well...you'll just have to wait.
At 18,000 or so words, it's one of the biggest stories published this year in a magazine...or any year.
So, what would merit a 28 page story?
I am not telling.
You are just going to have to wait....all I will say is that it this story has had a profound affect on me and I believe it might cause the same reaction to many of our readers.
You have been warned. Get ready to cool down the beer, warm up the brandy or chill the milk, it's going to be a long read.

Surly..it's not gone yet...a lot of skaters here are hammering the project managers email with 'save the bro bowl' emails and handing out flyers and notifying the tony hawk foundation...i am wary of
'development' around here because Tampa has made so many blankety blanking mistakes in regards to 'urban redevelopment'. Three future 'concepts' were put forth. Only one included keep the Bro where it's at whereas the other two used the term 'relocation' which is a nice way of saying 'removal'. Those two concepts included a very generalized 'skate area' away from where the Bro is currently located. Well, they have not, to my knowledge anyway, defined 'skate area' even. It could be one rail and quarter pipe for all we know. Right now, the points are that the Bro is historical, it's the only concrete bowl in Tampa to skate and IS skated. It's not just sitting there unused and the justifications for destroying it are pretty marginal and shortsighted.
And Michael, my apologies if it seems like your thread here has been hijacked and hope. perhaps, the issues of city planning and the realities skaters face is not an irrelevant topic for everyone.

it is still around and being skated! We would hit it whenever we would
road-trip to Tampa to see bands. Hope you guys can keep it open...good luck.

I think a lot of skaters around here are pulling to keep the Bro intact and the ones that can't are sending emails to the mister heading up the project. If anything happens to it..IF..anything happens to it, it won't be because everyone just let it happen. If you've been there, you know there's plenty of space around it to pour more concrete. Just hope it's the wavey kind. Not the 'park here and shop' kind. Though additional parking would be nice. And hey, Tony Hawk could always show up....Tony?...you out there Tony? lol Any plans to make the place nicer through business is fine but all the social and financial issues aside, it COULD be improved and that's the point. It doesn't have to be destroyed, it doesn't even make sense to destroy it and you don't have to be Donald Trump to understand that. Incorporate it into a bigger whole. The Floridaskater.com website has more info on it as well if you're interested. Not trying to preach to the choir, but thought there might be former Florida skaters or pro's who've skated it or hey, anyone who wants to get behind this - might like or want to know. The Bro is not flashy and it can be a real pain in the butt sometimes for this lazy goofy foot and isn't the best concrete to be had for sure. But it's there, it's free, it's survived since 1979, has provided people with some of their best 'stories' ( and we skaters love our stories ), draws new schoolers and longboarders and characters of all kinds...and while I'll never skate it like some of the brethern do, in fact I know I won't, it's THERE, available to all without nannies and waivers and squonky attitudes.
** Improve it, don't remove it.**<--hey, not a bad slogan huh? Someone give me a gold star dang blammit! LOL Or better, if you use that slogan in a video game, please send me royalty checks. Preferably really, really big ones.

I just got word about the Bro Bowl as well. That would truly be a shame to see that piece of history go. The more I think about it, the more I realize that it's a miracle that it's still there. I'd guess that it's only saving grace is that it's located in such a unique place. If the land it's on was desirable, it would have been gone years ago.
The Bro Bowl was a rite of passage for me. It was probably one of my first "road trips" when I got my license. That would have been 1983. We were riding a lot of ditches then. It was (is) a ditch made for skating. The great thing is that it is located where I-4 and 75 intersect. So if you were headed anywhere in SW Fla, you'd be right there. The bad thing was you did not go there alone, or at night. We got vibed and threatened ourselves. I've heard stories of much worse. Guys getting jumped and robbed, your car getting broken into right across the street. Guys getting chased out of there as bottles come raining down.That was some scary stuff for suburban/beach town new wavers like ourselves. I remember the local kids being cool and very curious about us. That changed over the years, as things do.
We skated it again a couple years ago and it was as fun as I remember it. How many things can you say that about.
I just wanted to chime in about a special place. If your curious, check out SPot's site, I'm sure they are on it. Hell, go check it out anyway. See if anyone you know has a mugshot lurking in cyberspace.

Snoball's BroBowl and Pauliwog's Ditch

Hey, Yep, I know EXACTLY what you mean. Same thing happened to my favorite drainage ditch in Cheyenne, Wyoming where I grew up. I rode that ditch around 1976 to 1985(?) a LOT. I loved that ditch, I used to ride my bike from northwest of city limits all the way to the southeast part of town before I could drive there. I had built 1/2 pipes of my own and helped others build 1/2 pipes and rode other friends 1/2 pipes, gone to skateparks in Colorado but that ditch was always one of my all time favorite places to ride. The City Maintenance Guys let us skate it and told the police to let us continue since we kept it cleaned out and picked up the garbage and never graffiti'ed it. The Cops were totally cool with that too, they'd hang out and watch some times. It was like a free public self maintanence skatepark. Then when a trailer park went in, a lardass alcaholic lived a whole 1/2 a block away and constantly complained to the cops and the sheriffs, fortunately our long history at the ditch outweighed that dickweed with the Police/Sheriff/City Maintanence who sided with us on it. Eventually another drainage way was routed into the ditch and basically turned it into an unfunctional mudpit. We blamed the alcoholic complaining dickweed for that, even though that was impossible, it was good to load that blame onto that bastard. Even with the mud dug out, it was'nt useable anymore we came to find out after a lot of hard labor. That ditch influenced my skating a LOT, a whole LOT. That ditch was my therapy. Other places were fun, but I had a connection to that ditch like no other place to skate. Now it's all under ground(literally) and out of site since being rebuilt again to accomodate an outdoor shopping strip that went in. Fast Forward to the Present: My favorite slalom spot of the last 4 years is similar, it's total public access(a riverfront walkway, one of several and it's the one that gets the least pedestrian traffic, lots of trees, the Willamette River, lots of birds), I keep it clean and the police and City Maintance guys where I live now appreciate the cleaning and watch us for entertainment. Unfortunately, a 5 story highrise with ground level businesses and above that will be condo's is being built at the starting area/top of the run. I'm hoping to get to know all the residents and shop owners as they move in and hope I get "grandfather claused" into being allowed to continue to ride there. I'll be bummed if I lose that spot, it got me on the podium at Morro Bay B-Class 2004. I guess nothing lasts forever, but nonetheless, great skatespots can be so timeless when you have that connection to those spots and they seem to last forever until things change. Gotta enjoy them while they're available. Adios-Paul

Not sure if anyone knows about this, or cares, but there are plans afoot here in Tampa to tear out the Bro Bowl :( Hey, that's what we do in Tampa. We tear down landmarks and put in strip malls.
I've heard the Bro Bowl is some part of a feature in the Tony Hawk video game. I've never seen it there, but I've seen it in person. Heck, I might've even skated it once or twice.
BTW, as far as I know...No, there are no plans to 'relocate' the Bro nor build anything better.
Things like this remind me that I know A LOT of foul words.
