ok, with shoes....
As long as they are popular, someone will have the overstock on sale within a year, i buy em' and tear em up fast. I hate thick tongues which most seem to have, and if they aren't suede or some kind of well built material they won't last two days on my feet. So i don't really care who advertises, i buy em' cheap, and chew through them like they were paper.

Steve, you are absolutely correct with the numbers of people skating. Thats is what we have been saying many times over. And it goes beyond just street, its all sorts of skating in general. To see what is happening, you are going to have to take yourself off of your skateboard and look at it from a different perspective. This where I think you and I miss each other.
Are you aware that the mainstream skateboard market is actually worried that the skateboard market is dieing. Why? I will tell you in a few moments.
Everyone is seeing record numbers of activity of real skaters really skateboarding. These are real skaters, and its definitely happening. Are you following me so far?
BUT, Do you realize how small of a protion of the mainstream market is made up of real skaters that you see and skate with? It is incredibly small. Now, think of it from the perspective of the industry. There is so much saturation of market product (profit opportunity is slim for individual companies) and there is so much reliance of the market on soft goods that the actual act of skateboarding by real skaters does not effect the market at all. The market is driven by softgoods that are being purchased more by nonskaters than by skaters themselves. In short, its a trend or fad. This whole billion dollar industry is primarily being consumed by nonskaters that are enjoying the "extreme" sports industry, and the mainstream market, collectively, has made billions. When that trend begins to trail off, the profits begin falling. The industry sees this as a bad thing, and screams that skateboarding is dieing. In reality skateboarding is not dieing at all. In fact, skateboarding is thriving in higher numbers than ever. BUT the fashion trend is dieing. As far as the mainstream market is concerned, the fashion trend is "skateboarding". This is where the advertizing analysis comes in handy of seeing where the market is focused. It isn't focused on skateboarding. Since "real skateboarding" is not a driver in the market, it is not affecting the market. All these skaters that you and I see skateboarding all over the place, buying product, enjoying parks, etc is not affecting the industry one iota. Its twisted, but its true.
This is why I talk so badly about the mainstream industry. They dont have a clue what is happening. they stupidly accuse the skaters of lacking support, in an industry that they are regulating (for lack of better words). This whole billion dollar industry has nothing to do with skateboarding. It has become based on a premise that if they can tell you what to buy and what to skate and who to support, then the industry booms. As far as the mainstream industry is concerend, the only real skaters are the pros. Its the consumers' job to support the pro skaters. I aint buying it.
Maybe thats a better description or background

So you are concerned that skating is headed in a direction where "support" is all that is left? What the hell does that mean? Do you really think skateboarding is going to go away and skate fashion is all that is left? Skateboarding is more alive today than ever. More people are skating, and the overall skill level is actually super high. I don't know how it is everywhere but I am blown away ever day at how rad people are. The kids today rip so much harder than the older generation did. What is normal today is just plain obscene. I was talking to a friend back home and he said the level of ripping is so off the charts it blows away what he has seen over the years. And this is Oregon. We are not talking about half assed stuff here but just plain ripping. But the magazines are killing this? I guess I don't understand where the mags come in. Yes they make money. Yes they sell items that are not skateboards. But explain to me what the hell this has to do with skateboarding. Posers are not new, and people wearing skate clothes and shoes who dont skate are not new either. The market is bigger than it ever has been. People are taking this activity to new levels every day. We have young and old skaters, more than ever. The sport is growing. How the hell is this bad and what do shoes have to do with it? I just don't get what you are saying.

The issue is not that shoes are bad, or that lots of people dont care about contests, or that there is no slalom or longboarding in the mainstream mags, or old guys hate street, etc etc.
The issue is the mainstream skateboard industry is a billion dollar industry that is focused on appearance and brands and supporting pros. That was the whole idea behind the advertisement breakdown as a method of seeing where the market is focused. Softgoods and non skating is what is carrying the market to these very high dollar levels. The media defines the market. That is the measuring stick. That measuring stick has so little to do with skateboarding and real product it is comical. Then the media has the attitude that if you are not doing what they define as skateboarding you are not supportive. So far they are not defining skateboarding as anything that skateboarders do(regardless of the type/discipline), but rather in where you need to spend your money what you wear. Funny thing is, they do not have a choice. When you focus on the same "thing" for so long, the "thing" itself no longer becomes the focus, but rather how you support the "thing". Eventually, "support" is all that is left.

So it is the fact that shoes are sold to non skaters, and people are trying to sell themselves and the products they endorse that is bad? And look at things like basketball shoes. How many guys wearing Jordans actually play ball? And I am not talking shooting baskets, but actually play in a leaugue or something. I think it is great people are getting paid to skate. How cool.
And I don't think a slalom ad in Thrasher or TWS is going to make it cool or popular. Most people don't like racing. That is a fact. Show me any sport where people are totally into the racing aspect. Most people I know who run don't race. They like the act of doing, not the competition aspect. I know a lot of skaters from various parts of the world. Most of them are not interested in racing. Is that because it is not in the magazines? Or is it not in most of the magazines because the interest simply is not there?
And good luck in Brazil Kludy, keep the stoke alive!
