folks,
I smell CHANGE...
yep, I sense it in the air....
ASR confirmed it...
the time of reckoning is fast approaching.
for the past number of years I have said things will change...it was just a question of when...
these next 6 months will bring about some fascinating events...
I predict...
1) more vintage shots in transworld
2) skaters getting tired of all the ads in the traditional skate mags
3) one KEY event that will tip this thing over...which, I pray is 80% sell through on newsstand! -get out to Barnes and Noble! and buy the damn mag!)
By the way, Strength magazine is toast. Publisihing is not for the timid...especially since those guys were backed by CCS! Yep. It's true.
Anyone else care to make predictions??

just finished up at asr...
the reaction to the mag was very positive...
afterwards, Glen Smith (SolidSkate.com) and I went to see Stoked.
this film is incredibly well put together. The story will have even non-skaters rivetted to their seat.
YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS FILM...dvd arrives in January...

well it's less than 12 hours before the start of ASR...
anticipation is running high.
I have got the mag down here and response is very positive. We still a long way to go...but slowly, we are getting there.
I like the ebb and flow (no pun intended) of discussion. I think what Mike and I and the rest of the CW contributors really want to make sure of is that we create a magazine that is truly remarkable. I have put some photos in this issue from Scott Starr. One is in fact a rail shot, but is so incredible that it will provoke a response from all types of skaters....
The one thing I find is that when I run across a guy like Will J (at 20 skating EVERYTHING), it restores my faith in the sport. What an incredibly positive outlook! I hope you spread the word far and wide. Skateboarding is going thru some major changes and this ASR show is going to be very interesting...
We'll nail this article and it will blow some minds...

Yep! It is all good! Hell, It's ALL great. I think all of us here are total skaters. We love it all. I was simply asking CW what they wanted to see in the "50 Hot". It's up to CW to decide what they want between their front and back covers. Other mags cover other facets of skating, but it's all skating.

I'm not saying ledges and rails are evil, and I too completely love all forms of skating. ALL OF THEM.
I'm just not excited by standing in line at the "spot du juor" waiting your turn to attempt your trick, making it or not, then getting back in line. Yawn.
I personally blame Skate Vids for a lot of this. Life is down to the edit. (no offense Mr. Darcey and others here)
Trujillo, Cardiel, Gonz, and many others charge! No doubt about it. They all too connect moves and FLOW. It's not skating for a photo op.

Every generation has it's thing, sometimes the generations disagree. That's true in life and skating.
The skaters I enjoy watching the most have their roots in the past, live in the present, and always seeking the future. To pigeon-hole yourself in ANYTHING is lame.

As far as street skating not flowing just watch any footage of Mark Gonzales doing anything from 360 flips to rails and you will truly see what flow is. I think it all rocks!

what about us 20 somethings that DO skate EVERYTHING..
who are any of you to say what is or isn't FLOW..
you all sound like bitter old men to us younger crowd, NOT a good way to get people interested.. (not an insult b/c all the "older gen" people i've met skating are seriously great guys and wonderfull people, i'm just stating how it appears to the younger generation of skaters)
I skate everything i can, longboards, slalom, downhill, parks, trannies, pools, ledges, rails, gaps, EVERYTHING.. why, BECAUSE IT ALL FLOWS. modern street skating is BEAUTIFULL, as is all other forms of skating, if you can't see that maybe it's YOU who needs to open your mind. the feeling i get bombing a massive hill, making a clean fast run on a slalom course, busting a fakie five0 to 180 out on a ledge followed by a heelflip over a gap, sliding a grind across coping while doing a bert, ALL GIVES ME THE SAME FEELING.. from riding ricky's warptail, to my blank "popsickle stick" puts me in a good place mentally and physically, the reason I started skating to begin with (5 years old-85/86- on a banana board)..

Yes...100% Skateboarding.
The stuff done on ledges and rails these days is gnarly. My personal feelings towards it is, with very few exceptions that I've seen, it's static and devoid of flow. Is it still skating? Sure.
Our position at this point is to let the shoe catalogs...I mean other mags...cover this section of skating. They've got the formula down.
Layback Ledge Grind? That would be cool...if they rode into and out of it.

I have to agree with Stubbs and PALMER. Skating is everything...street/freestyle, transition, downhill, cruising, slalom.
It is funny though how we have a segment of teen-age-toe-flippres who just flip rails and stairs, and then a segment of slalom skaters that just wiggle through cones. Skating is skating everything.
Skating anything in a rad way is cool as funk.

Rails and ledges are just as important as any other form of skating.Its all skating. Sure the guys that limit themselves to rails and stairs are missing out on all the other great s#@! to skate. Backside smith in a pool or on a 15 stair rail, same s#@! different surface. Do it all Do it all.
