2005 Worlds
On 9/21/2005 Cknuck/Claude Regnier wrote in from Canada  (64.230.nnn.nnn)

where to start,EH!

It only hurts when I move, LOL. The overall event was great. I was sorry I missed wathching the Park Slalom. Depending on the difficultu of the Frontside turns I may even have entered it cuz the park and the course looked great.

Day 1: Wed - GS arrived just on time to hurry into a practice run. Around the 8th cone all 4 wheels went for a slide. I got my hands downs then went into a knee slide then a few side rolls. When my knee's touched down I realized I hadn't pulled my knee pads on over my leathers, Ouch!

This was the start of Hat Tricks like no other. 3 Finger Tips along with 2 knees were short skin and some bruising and swelling of the left knee ensued. The right knee just slightly damages and bruised.

That was one of my 2 alotted practice runs. I passed on the 2nd one as I was having my fingers bandaged so could race. I was two afraid to look at my knee's cuz I new what may be under there. My 1st. run was kind of a safety run and the 2nd one wasn't much better. Can't figure out why? The GS was set much better then last year as we started on the hill as opposed to the flat.

The racing was a great single lane affair. The man of the DAY (not the winner) Jonathan Harms tucked and turned himself into 3rd (I Think) while everyone else pumped all they could to go either faster Mitchell & Mollica or slower.

Days 2 & 3 - Other then a great timed practice session with most of the best racers in the world it was really a waste of time doing the single lane qualifying for the Worlds there. The hill was fine and the surface was about a six. The Slalom had some tough offsets with the left hand curve of the road making it even tougher to go in full bore and not blow out of the course or take out the entire section or close. Again some great runs were laid down. I had a couple of practice runs as I was a little tired and sore.

In my st. timed run I wiped out right past the finnish line as I lunged for a better time. One minor scrape on the right elbow as my Elbow pads helped complete the second of 3 Hat Tricks. The lunge was for nothing as I had apparently hit to many cones and DQ! I layed down to pretty good runs after that one and mamaged to stay on my feet. I did hit (I think) 4 & 6 cones but still managed to qualify 10th.

In the TS Quals I had just as much of a tough time with cones and only placed 17th after all was said and done. I only ended up taking two practice runs on either day which does not really help out at this level and time of year. That's all I though my body could take. This was 3 days in a row of skating for me this year and I had two meaningfull days ahead.

Day 4 - Dual Hybrid type (same course as last year or really close to it)Nice pitch, beautiful view, super strong headwind and a road surface rating of approximately 3. I was up against Andrew Mercardo who is an excellent allround skater. His Slalom skills will improve and he will be a force to reckon with in the future. I was not prepared to let him in the door and took a 3.1 second lead after the 1st run then in the 2nd run tried to go even faster as I was to face Kenny.

I blew out of the gate and Kenny got past me in hte early offsets as these areas seem to fit into my weakness. I managed to get it together and close the gap by the bottom and we both hit plenty of cones. I got back to the top only to find out I pulled early and was faced with a 1.5 deficit for the 2nd run. This time I waited in the gate and took off after Kenny from the get go. I'm pretty sure i beat him to the line and in one of the pics it shows me ahead of him. It wasn't enough for sure. He went on and some great racing ensued. The nice thing today was no falls. No new wounds to take care of. I had enough, really!

Day 5 - The TS looser then last year and my two practice runs were by far some of my best runs the entire 2005 season. I was facing Kosik the 16th seed (I was 17th) and had a .5 lead after the 1st. run. Yes, just like at Breck with a .7 lead over Noah I blew it. Don't know how or why but I did? I had to take out the last cone on my 1st. run to avoid a DQ at the finnish and that caused me to take my last fall. This also completed the Tripple Hat Tirck - 3 Falls - 3 Fingers - 3 End Caps ( 2 knees, 1 elbow). We won't talk about the Toe, the hip or the shin, Okay?

I guess I was just to tired or whatever but on the 2nd run vs Kosik I was having a sloppy run realled him in after his once again great start and hit the last cone. that apparently was the knockout punch for me and my racing was over.

All in all it was great and I'm sorry no one else was there. Thank you all for the support and keep praticing cuz it ain't getting any easier. I really want to Thank all of the skaters and volunteers at the event. Many people helped mke with 1st. aid last week. Dave Hackett climbed the fence to pick up my board at the GS crash and several people jumped in to help.

Cones
On 9/20/2005 Rob wrote in from United States  (67.71.nnn.nnn)

I have to agree with Brad - soccer cones are potentially dangerous.

I used them when I began - started with the bases on - if you get to close to the cone - there is a chance your wheel will slide on the base - result you eat pavement.

Then I cut the bases off - the cones become incredibly flexible, can collapse under your wheels - result you eat pavement.

My suggestions is to buy proper cones (they do not need to be Turner/Seismic), but ones that have no bases, but have a reinforced bottom - so they don't collapse.

Just my 2 cents

Rob

Soccer cones
On 9/20/2005 Greg Olsen wrote in from Canada  (206.172.nnn.nnn)

My feeling is that they are stiffer with the base and they just bump out of the way when hit. When they are trimmed they deform and go under the skateboard.

That is if his wife will let him skate and his kid doesn't run off with his new PPS Brown Bomber deck. :)

You may have to get that kid of yours his own slalom board, snowplow.

cones ARE safety equipment in there own right....

I took the cheapie route when I first started slaloming and had one of the bargin
cones get wrapped up in a front wheel....no need for foot dragging on that particular run......

Yah, that was a burley splash you took! You rode right up on that one.

I dunno man... I just don't trust that base.

Bring 'em to the Church of Slalom tomorrow night--we'll get snowplow to try them out :)

Slam on good cones
On 9/19/2005 gregolsen wrote in from Canada  (209.205.nnn.nnn)

Hey Blair didn't I prove you can slam super hard on the GOOD cones a coupla' weeks ago? :) Like I said we had many people hit them on the weekend and no sudden stops resulted. In fact the ONE I did trim goes right under the deck the same way the good ones do. I don't know if that is good or bad. Hitting the untrimmed ones the tapered part of the cones just sucked under and the square bases just stopped at the edge of the deck and the cones slid along without going all the way under. I am convinced they might even be BETTER!

Conage
On 9/19/2005 Slob-air wrote in from Canada  (24.71.nnn.nnn)

I would use them unless the base is trimmed off--one could quite easily hit the cone and ride up onto the base--slam-o-rific!

Session at the Church of Slalom at 6.66pm Tuesday -- see you cats there.

Cheap cones
On 9/19/2005 Snowplow wrote in from Canada  (68.144.nnn.nnn)

Yeah I found some at the dollar store and debated buying them. I chose not to, but I might go back and pick them up anyway. The base is pretty thin, but if need be, I can hack them off with a bandsaw or the like at my school's shop.

Cheap (er) cones
On 9/19/2005 Pierre wrote in from Canada  (24.200.nnn.nnn)

I buy my cones at the Dollar Store - 1$ CDN each, they have the square base but i never crashed cause of that, unless you double them: now you gotta be careful. Of course Seismic cones are better but they just cost too much.

cheap cones
On 9/19/2005 Chris Barrett wrote in from Canada  (69.158.nnn.nnn)

Right on, I never really looked at the Canadian Tire cones. Some of the kebbek cats were using square lipped cones, and they proved to be no hazard.

I'll look into it, thanks for the tip greg!

Canadian Tire Soccer cones
On 9/19/2005 Greg Olsen wrote in from Canada  (206.172.nnn.nnn)

Hey Canuck Slalomers:
The small cones at Canadian Tire stores available in the soccer section are fine for slalom. They have a small square base which is no problem. It is so thin and not much bigger then the cone itself that it poses no safety hazard. I used them all day on Saturgday in Jasper and I assure you there were lots of cones down with the newbie slalomers there. They are $6 CDN for four. There is a larger size too but it is quite a bit more money.
Greg

Chris, yeah man, I enjoyed skating with you too! And you improved tremendously since the Ottawa race.

Don't know about the Mon-t cats but from what I know none of the Quebec City Crew plans on going. For me, sadly it's too far to drive in a fairly short amount of time and I 'm too poor to fly. And it pisses me off cause I'd really like to be there to race and hang with Marion, Ron and their whole crew...

But at least 5 of us should be at the Farm Outlaw Finale in Vermont october 1 and 2.

And we will visit Toronto. If it's not this fall than next spring. You can count on that!
