so what?
On 9/9/2005 mbl wrote in from Canada  (64.230.nnn.nnn)

Can you guys explain to me how the tragic turn of events this week in Calgary and the planned outlaw ride in Toronto on Sept. 10 could possibly aid in moving skateboarding forward as a sport? What are the rest of us working for if people continue to 'outlaw' and participate in events that the rest of the world deems unreasonable? I acknowledege that part of the allure is the outlaw of the thing, but please, if you want sponsors, if you would like to make a living at what you love, let's try to keep some sort of sanity about the thing.....nobody's gonna believe it should be an olympic sport while they're scraping bodies off the asphalt with shovels on Yonge Street. That's just the way it works....

longboard death
On 9/9/2005 ross the boss wrote in from Canada  (24.71.nnn.nnn)

It was a fatal miscommunication between two "inseparable" brothers that led to tragedy on a southeast street Wednesday afternoon, says the surviving sibling.

Brent McBryan, 20, said he and Jamie, 22, decided to test the new longboard Jamie had just bought by going down the freshly paved hill on 27th Street.

Brent said he went down on his longboard to a stop sign at the intersection of 11th Avenue to watch for traffic, but didn't have a chance to signal before Jamie coasted down through.

Jamie was run over by a truck at about 3 p.m. and died late that night from massive head injuries.

Calgary: Sessions & Races
On 9/9/2005 Slob-air wrote in from Canada  (24.71.nnn.nnn)

Olsen/Snowplow/Kash et al.

Saturday Session looks off due to weather-- Skaterock bands The Hoosegow and Sheglank'd Shoulders are playing the Castle that night though. There may be a pre-show thing at the Ship. They may play a house party Sunday night as well. Good chance of the Edmonton S&B contingent showing up for Saturday and or Sunday.

Sunday looks do-able for a clover session and perhaps set a course as well--I'll bring my cones. 1pm?

Tuesday's weather is looking not too bad for slalom night. I'll e-mail the usual suspects with confirmations. We'll probably meet at Millennium at 6pm and go to a better spot (don't be late). May do a hill-bomb session at Marzden Hill afterwards as well.

I think myself and buckethead may be hitting Source late this afternoon or later this evening (Friday).

Mig! how goes, bro?

Mtl Slalom Jam
On 9/8/2005 Mig wrote in from Canada  (206.162.nnn.nnn)

Wassup Brad! The official race was cancelled a couple of weeks ago which then turned into an outlaw event which actually turned into a slalom jam as the day went on. Most of the racers who took part in the speedboard races and parties were injured, hungover or both :), or had already left due to plane schedules. So everyone decided to take it easy.

Pierre put up a nice 36 cones dual tigh hybrid without timers and we raced whoever was ready at the start. Between 15 and 20 slalomers showed up (less than I expected due to the reasons above) from Toronto (Civ, Chris,...), Mtl (Pierre, Rookie, Seb, Raylene,...) and Quebec (Dan, Julie, Rich, Rick, and me).

It was a lot of fun! Cool, friendly atmosphere. Everyone had a great time!

By the way, you have to make it to The Farm next year, man! Great race! Will you be at next year's Dovercourt Open?

Luge Death
On 9/8/2005 Cknuck wrote in from Canada  (64.230.nnn.nnn)

Greg, Calgary Sun reports 25 yr old ran the stop sign while lugging and struck a truck.

Injuries proved fatal. One neighbour said it was bound to happen as there is only a 2 way stop at the intersection and skateboarders never stop.

Yah, it was a killer session. Millennium is fun because we can ride the park as well but I'd also like to set up a big course on a bigger hill.

That said, I think a few of us are going to Millennium this afternoon to ride the clover and will peobably set up a TS for awhile as well.

Greg - you in?

TS Jones
On 9/1/2005 Olsen wrote in from Canada  (206.172.nnn.nnn)

With all this talk of TS on the Slalom Forum I am Jonesin' for some TS. Dead straight...5.5-6 foot.....It is truly the most fun and I feel I am better at it than Hybrid...but then I might be dreaming. I still have dreams at 46 that I can 360 like a Carrasco or Howell but the most I ever did was three in a row. Sad ain't it? Never did learn to fakie or ollie either....

Cups
On 9/1/2005 Slob-air wrote in from Canada  (24.71.nnn.nnn)

I can't reveal that! If I told you, I'd have to.... well, not that but.. not till I have a patent on it anyway. :)

The ones on my Vectors were 25-years old and totally disintegrated, but the ones I made for my Bennett Pros, after analyzing them post race, seem to be performing beyond all expectation.

Skating the bowls and fullpipe this weekend so I guess I'll see you at Tuesday's race. Chuck and I were just talking about setting a 60-cone dual hybrid.

Hey man, I didn't mean any disrespect to anyone. :D I would prefer it in montreal even... but I guess I'm biased. Ottawa isn't the most exciting place sometimes. But the dovercourt open was a sick race, for sure. So what the hell do I know anyways. ;)

Hold up... the slalom championships are being held in OTTAWA? That makes a little bit of sense I guess...

I think theres some excellent, near world class runs in Toronto. Much better night life and atmosphere for a championship anyways.
