I saw Hester's new Roe LDP/Carving deck over on Bomber online dot com in the 'off topic' (ie, off snow) forum. Looks really sweet !!! Glad to see Gareth making such nice boards still, and even more stoked that H.H. is involved !

Hey Jameskidoodle! Just say'n "Hey!". Your poster for the Plano Battle Royale was hilarious.
Jeeze, the way this winter and spring are looking, and the way my luck with events has been going, I'm getting dubious about scheduling my next Salem slalom BBQ. Ugggghhhhh!

Thanks, Peters! While this does not disclose secrets like wedging or truck set-ups, it at least allows 'tuners' like myself a few good guesses as to where the best combos live! It looks to me like the old cambered 'pump/slalom/dh' deck is gone, replaced by low-slung dh boards re-geared to crank turns. That would work, but not when using pumping more than pushing. I've had a severe rocker, actually an S-camber shape, that has done distances with ease, slides on command (even with Gumballs, Avalons, Avilas and Roadie Racers), and is stable in some set-ups to straight-line 55 mph. The trick is that, like a Landy Evo, the front is pre-wedged, while the back sits flat. My feet settle into the rocker, which provides both low pushing platform and an ergonomic stance in a refined Hut (or Lewis) Tuck, where the back foot sits Higher than the rear foot. I can punch thru 7 ft. cone sets with a 28" wheelbase and using Tracker Aggros, and running Siesmics, can pump flats alongside my kids (while on 16" rim bikes). The rocker is 'extreme' by newer standards, but it close (though up-scaled) to my 1977 Hobie, just add a few inches to the length and depth, in proportion, of course. What I'd hoped to see was some side-shots, or info on trucks/wheels in combo. That, though, I can figure out for myself.
Keep Pumping!!

Hey PSR, I'm just not checking back often but here's a few shots of typical setups the "top guns" are pushing - this course in Miami next week is like a NASCAR track (Homestead Speedway) approx 1.5 miles loop on smooth asphalt. Most are running a lower setup and 85mm wheels (some like me stick with topmount + 75mm)

So, no tips on distance, eh? I guess youthful vigor must be it then, and maybe some fat old Blue 70mm kryptos from back when they were stateside still.... Hmm, I guess I'll ask some curb-hopper next time, that is, If his 48mm wheels roll......

While, I won't, due to(old)age and possibility of premature respritory failure, join in the event, I wonder, what's the best setup here? I mean, do you go for pushing ease, or aim at carved pumping, or what? I used to Sk8 MILES on my board, over some crazily hilly terrain as a kid. I recall hiking after the incline was more than 3%, and coasting with pumped turns on the opposite. Big wheels with great bearings, and decently stable trucks, on a board that both could get-to, and give-pumping-to, your speed. So, what's good set-up? Go long, and low, while hoping to avoid the wob's; Or go shorter, with an eye on pumping thru on flats or slight upgrades, while having the edge in weight and controlling speed on inclines?
Just curious, and, NO, not getting into it at 51 yr. on, thanks... LOL

I have a 38.5 x 10 at the widest concave point and was looking for mph with a board sized 38x10 ...... Also the current record of 80.416 ?? is with size wheel & board ? Thanks in advance for accurate info. I live in HB So Cal and have some fun steep hills a few at slopes 8 to 1 for 40- 50 yds+ it pretty much looking sharply at downward angle and mach'in! I run a 2.25 x 2.25 dia wheel , 38 " x 10" board amd independent trucks and apec bearings. Im 44 and weigh like 208 & 6'3 tall and routinely hit 40 mph down HB hills .... Lost a wheel recently , but more equipment confident now with the tube of lock tight seal on both trucks blts and on all 4 wheels, losing that wheel sucked bad, but living to mach another day with nothing broken. Peace , Dante

I'll be attending a city meeting at the end of May to get this issue onto an upcoming meeting agenda, so the more signatures and comments the better!!!

Skateboarding prohibited at Mountain View CA. parks???

The city has a large network of paved multi-use trails and I have been cycling and skating on them for about a year now. Just yesterday, ran into the ranger at the one park and he informed me that skateboarding is prohibited in the park. I had never seen any signage to that affect, but he did show me one sign in the middle of the park with a page of park regs. posted and in the fine print it has this: (see links on pavedwave.org Legality post)
Digging into the city code I find the text of the 38.20g regulation and here it is: (see links on pavedwave.org Legality post)
They allow inline and roller skates, scooters, push and pedal bikes but no boards?
Anyone have any good tips/pointers on how to get this situation changed? Would like to see some specific things to say or similar cases in another city where something like this was overturned.
I have sent an inquiry to the city council staff to clarify this 20 year old notice. With reference to the roller/inline skating, they mention no reckless skating and have speed limits posted for that and cyclists (15 MPH). I can see prohibiting unsafe behavior in any activity, but to ban a given activity outright with no explanation is wrong.
All the surrounding cities allow skateboards on the multi-use trails and there is even one trail that goes right through a skate park. Been by that area many times and none of the park skaters venture more than 100' from the park as those sorts of boards/trucks/wheels don't do well on the somewhat rough asphalt. At the Mt. View trails, I don't see any "skate-able" terrain outside of miles and miles of flat paved trails. Aside from the strip of pavement along the tops of the levees, it is gravel/dirt/grass and they have that all off limits for the wild life. Out there I would be more concerned with BMX bikes coming in and riding off trail yet bicycles of all sorts are allowed.
The ranger was pretty cool about it though. He let me continue skating and was impressed with the board, the pads and helmet and that I was not some "young punk" out joy riding. The other puzzling thing is that the trail I was riding on was part of the SF Bay Trail network and is signed as such. And the Bay Trail is mandated to be full multi-use with the only restriction of no motorized vehicles. This trail just skirts the outer boundary of the park. I could see prohibiting skate boards or any non-pedestrian access from the center of the park where folks like to walk around the lake, most of the trails there are dirt anyway.
The city also got federal funds to build at least part of these trails according to the huge sign they have at the far end where they are working to extend the trail and I wonder if there are any federal mandates that trump city regulations in this area?

Last weekend Andy Andras flew up from Florida to Eugene Oregon to try cracking the 250-mile 24-hour ultraskating record. He came close, particularly given some of the worst long stretches of hard pounding rain the Northwest was able to dish out over night!! He ended with 3rd place in the world, at 230.4 miles, and Conan Isaac Gay, the host of this event, also nailed 200 miles. More shots and short recap is here:
