Dart in front of car, get hit, then get a ticket!
On 5/11/2010 pchewn wrote in from (24.21.nnn.nnn)

By The Oregonian April 13, 2010, 9:39PMA 13-year-old skateboarder was injured after he rode in front of a car this evening in Aloha, the Washington County Sheriff's Office reported. The boy, who was wearing headphones but not a helmet, suffered a minor head injury in the collision, said Sgt. David Thompson, a sheriff's spokesman. Deputies responded about 5:45 p.m. to Southwest 193rd Avenue and Westword Street. Rodrigo Egusquiza, 47, of Portland told them he was driving south on 193rd Avenue past Kinnaman Elementary School when the skateboarder rolled in front of his car. He said he couldn't stop before striking the boy.A camera system in Egusquiza's car recorded the incident, and he replayed the tape for deputies. They said it confirmed his account. The boy was taken to OHSU Hospital with an apparent concussion. He was expected to recover fully, Thompson said. Deputies cited him as a pedestrian failing to yield the right of way to a vehicle. =====================Lesson #1: Wear a helmetLesson #2: Watch out for cars.Lesson #3: Listen for cars -- instead of music

Mall skating & COPS
On 1/14/2009 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (24.21.nnn.nnn)

If the economy keeps going south, there should be PLENTY of empty stores at the mall soon to skate in. Probably really cheap to lease one of those for an indoor skate park ....

My daughter-in-law is a cop (rookie). She bought me a skateboard for my last birthday. I get along with most cops -- always have. It makes life easier.

The coolest thing is that like my dad like alot of older men. Would never get on a skateboard and like the dads , dads that where lawmakers now there kids are lawmakers and lawman. I race skateboards and at one race I should have when to jail after the cop Stoped me on the race hill, well kind of on the race hill. Doing crazy stuff with my truck. Will anyways he was a skater and let me go back to camp. Made me walk but thats cool !
I point is that my kids and your kids when grown will be the cops and store owners and skateboarding will no longer be a crime like today.
Skateboarding has come so far it just blows my mind. For me at 13 years old , three wheels over the top of the vert ramp was all that. Hell they are doing crazy ass flips now. We could skateboard 30 mph , 35 was death . Now we do 60 mph easy every day.
Skateboarding of all kinds RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Portland OR. skaters are cool
On 1/14/2009 g777w wrote in from United States  (24.21.nnn.nnn)

I used to skate a lot in HS and now I am in my 30's and have a kid too. I went to a local outdoor skatepark(we have many)to check it out. I did not have a board with me so I just watched. I was obviously much older than the (dozen or so) skaters there. They were all good and it was fun to watch them. Never had parks like this in 'my day'(oh my god I am now old enough to say that!!!! Next thing you know I will be walking around with a Pepto Bizmol instead of a beer! Life is short guys...YOU are headed for where I am!!!).
almost immediately two teenagers said hello and were very cool to me. I saw nobody being uncool in fact. To anybody. Then...two cops dropped by and in a few minutes I left. I don't like cops(long story)but I was cool as I walked by them. I got a dirty look from one of them as if he was thinking "What are YOU doing here?' He was about 40 or 50 pounds overweight and probably never rode a skateboard in his life...let alone realise that there are PLENTY of skaters over 30(oldmanarmy.com for one). I just left. But I could not help but make a note of who I got the dirty look from. It wasn't the skaters.
I think skateboards are a pure genius invention. I think they should get FAR more positive attention than they get. the skateboard culture IMO is so much in response to adults treating skaters like trash. People get pissed and retaliate when they are discriminated against. It takes guts to do the stuff that skaters do these days and if and when skaters get more respect I do believe that the rebel skaters(put your own meaning on that?)will have more respect back.
I DO know this: that you can do everything right and there will always be cops that want to harass you...or people...drivers etc. Skaters have the rights to skate and unfortunately are lowest on the food chain in too many road etc users minds. That sucks. It will probably still suck as much years from now. So skate on and just be aware and faster than the a-holes that are bound to chase you or worse. Afterall...a cop just shot a guy to death in CA who was already being held down by two other cops! Obviously, he could not have been in iminent danger. Nor can he say that he confused his gun for his stun-gun(but he is going to try that BS!)as they do not feel at all the same once in your had and RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE...BEFORE you pull the trigger. The cops were called out on a possible "fight in progress". Ironically...there was no fight...just one dead guy after the cops showed up. Perhaps(old guys say 'perhaps')they could have gotten away...if they had skateboards!?

Skateboarders are NOT this country's problem. Cops have found more ways and times(with out any good reason)to hassle me than any skater ever did. I have personally met one A-hole skater in my life. I lost count of the A-hole cops I have met. I made a tee shirt(I'm a screen printer)that says 'COP FREE ZONE' in big letters on the front. (Wish it were guaranteed to work!!!)

My kid is not so much into skateboarding...but he loves my street luge I built and he is getting good at that. I love SL too. Maybe comp someday???

SKATE ON.

San Francisco: skateboarding is legal everywhere at any time
On 10/15/2008 Morgan wrote in from United States  (75.61.nnn.nnn)

In March of this year, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved Ordinance 45-08, enacting Proposition A which repealed the entire Traffic Code and enacted the Transportation Code. The new code says nothing about skateboards. The *only* law in SF about skating is that you must wear helmet & pads in city skateparks.

State law still says that minors must wear helmets.

Ordinances passed this year (45-08 is linked as a PDF from here)

Correct Decision, Wrong Reason

Lebanon school district relaxes policy on skateboards
by The Associated Press
Wednesday September 03, 2008, 11:41 AM
LEBANON -- An Oregon school district says students can ride skateboards to class -- but the boards have to be put away as soon as the students arrive.

The Lebanon School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to change district policy.

Under the old policy, teachers and staff were supposed to confiscate skateboards, inline skates or scooters and place them in the principal's office for parents to retrieve.

But Lebanon school Superintendent Jim Robinson said that put too much responsibility on staff members.

-- The Associated Press

==================================== ======================

Correct decision to let people skateboard to school -- but the reason is "too much responsibility on staff members (to confiscate board and store in principal's office)". HUH????

The right reason: Students should be free to choose any reasonable transportation to school (walk, bus, skateboard, scooter, etc).

Public Golf Course
On 7/20/2008 nelsonn wrote in from United States  (67.185.nnn.nnn)

So I went golfing at a course here in eastern washington, and it has a sick cart path that is unbroken around all 18 holes. It's a public course and although there is a fence around certain parts of the course, much of it is not fenced. In addition I don't think there are any trespassing signs, and there definately aren't any "no skateboarding" signs. I'm wondering two things: 1. If there is a security gaurd what legal right would he have to detain me in the event that I was caught and he tried to do so? 2. Would this be a reasonable risk to take given that it would be an awesome ride, but also given that the chances of gaurds or actual police arriving is semi-moderate?

On 7/20/2008 Ashley wrote in from United States  (98.121.nnn.nnn)

I live in Lexington, NC and my brother and his friends were busted earlier today for skating in an empty parking lot. 1 of the guys ran out of gas so they rode their boards to the bank to get money for gas and they almost got arrested for it.. they got back to their cars and there was 3 cop cars waiting for them. They were told they cant skate anywhere in the city. The closest skatepark though is over 30 minutes away. Whats really lame though is that there is NOTHING for kids in our town. AT ALL! WE have to drive over 20 minutes away just to go to a clean movie theater... its freakin ridiculus!!!!!!

Public school parking lot skateboarding
On 7/10/2008 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (15.252.nnn.nnn)

Usually, the law allows the owner of the property (the public school board) to allow or disallow skateboarding. Usually, a sign is required to be posted in order to inform you about what is not allowed.

The law might be unclear and subject to different interpretations.

As is common in most of these cases, the attitude and behavior of those involved will determine what happens more than the literal meaning of the law. For example, does the security guard have a bad attitude to skateboarders? Does the security guard run everyone off (bicyclists, pedestrians, etc)? Has the school recently been the target of vandalism, tagging, or arson? Were the skateboarders polite and considerate and not interfering with traffic? And a hundred other intangible subjective things could make this go either way.

Instead of dealing directly with the security guard, you might have more success contacting either the school board, the principal, the custodian, or some other authority. The security guard works for someone else who sets the policy. Find that other person and using your best persuasion skills and your best behavior, ask them to instruct the security guard to leave you alone.

I can't condone the security guard grabbing either you or your board unless there was immediate danger of you damaging propery or other people....

WHAT State, County, City, and school? (Laws are different in each locality)

Skateboarding Law
On 6/30/2008 Dan wrote in from United States  (76.27.nnn.nnn)

So i have a question about the legality of skateboarding in a public school parking lot. Today I was skating in the parking lot of a public high school near my house with my buddy when the security guard of the school pulled up behind us.(mind you it's summer time and school is no longer in session.) After honking and forcing us out of his way he stopped, jumped out of his car, and raced over to me grabbing me by the arm and reaching for my board. As he had me held by the arm my buddy got up in his face. Eventually we where able to get away from him. I tried to reason with the security guard but he only resorted to violence. I was wondering if it is legal to skate in a public school parking lot. I mean its public property and I pay taxes. Its legal to skate in the streets so why not in these parking lots. There is no traffic, i'm out of the way of other cars, i'm being safer. Can this security guard legally attack myself and my friend like he did. Is he in the right for acting as he did. I just want to longboard. I love longboarding, it brings me joy. Why do people hate skateboards what have we done?
