ultimate slider
On 4/24/2004 david wrote in from (192.211.nnn.nnn)

of course, everybody is going to have there own preference for what they like to ride. for me its:

custom COMET proflex 40" downhill cut down to 37" with a 20" wheelbase
tracker darts wedged front(+ steering) and back(- steering) with stimulators bottom and indys top nice and loose
88a 65mm no skools or 63.5 94a la costas or stingers
this board rocks for slides, perfect wheelbase, can take it pretty fast(about 35 no prob) and the rocker shape of the deck is perfect for locking your feet into the board when you slide.
oust or abec 11 bearings but the bearings don't really matter when you are sliding anyways

learning board
On 4/24/2004 Ryan 'VA' wrote in from (66.239.nnn.nnn)

As for learning sliding, you can learn on anything...what you ride isn't going to make you learn any faster...i learned the basic heelside slides and toeside slides on an S9 with crappy pivot trucks, dirty beat up Abec 3's, and crappy Nineballs (the blue ones that came on the decks about 4-5yrs ago) without gloves or anything on flat streets. They weren't nice at all, and i probably wouldn't even consider them slides nowadays, but i learned the basics, and that's all there was too it. Then it was just speeding it up some more, and pushing it harder, and then mixing it up a little more. It takes time, and practice, but most of all make sure you're having fun doing it. If you really want something that'll help your sliding though, make yourself a nice pair of gloves (drop me an email, i can give you some ideas to make some cheap, bad ass gloves)and some sliding wheels.

bad misconception
On 4/24/2004 Ryan wrote in from (66.239.nnn.nnn)

AHH ok sorry, i thought you meant like say the front right wheel, and the back right wheel...i wasn't even thinking back wheels or front. sounds sweet.

and for the ultimate sliding setup...i'd buy

Yancey Meyer deathpod (or something to that extent...atleast a nice kicktail and nose with a shorter wheelbase)
Randal 150's (soft red indy bushings)
Sergio Yuppie sliders
Bones Swiss 6 bearings.

What would the ultimate slide board set up be?

What would be the best deck, trucks, wheels and bearings to learn sliding on?

What are you guys using for sliding?

Ryans 2wheels Slide
On 4/24/2004 Scott S. wrote in from (142.177.nnn.nnn)

Ryan When you slide on two wheels are they your back 2? or your front 2? or your side 2?

Because i can do those and i dont get flat spots because I dont continue doing one after the other for a long period of time...I mix them up with pendulum slides which evens out the wear on my wheels so i dont wear out my wheels in one spot.
Hope that helps you continue doing that trick, it sounds pretty rad

pendulum slides...va beach.

here's some new clips of me and my friend hittin some slides. im on the landy, one is a toeside pendulum (looks more like two toeside slides...they look alot better now) and by boy mike is the one hittin the heelside pendulum.

this is the new galyans garage in Virginia Beach, Va. off independence blvd. right behind the town centre garage actually. it's great for sliding and carving. they're got 3 mellow ramps you can hit too. stairs and elevators that are easily accessible from the sidewalk. the entrance is to the right and there always blasting some sort of 'alterna-techno' which sounds like bjork over a dope bassline, but it's still nice. the bass gets you pumped up. it's a nice run, probably the best garage ramp i've skated out here. check out our site for more vids, they're in the gallery section.

don't slide on two wheels
On 4/23/2004 Ryan wrote in from (66.239.nnn.nnn)

getting up on two wheels screws them up pretty bad. you'll get flat spots on the side of your wheels if you're going up at an angle. a friend of mine did this pretty bad the other night going coleman and ate them on the sides sliding. the whole night his wheels were chunked and making this horrible noise. it felt and sounded like you were skating on brick path.

The Buck stops here...
On 4/23/2004 PSR wrote in from (24.52.nnn.nnn)

Buck, scroll down a bit.I did put down some hints on footbraking in here. When learning footbraking, don't wear stickier shoes, pick ones that have a smooth sole, and a sole that has some thickness to it.I like Vans,or Airwalk shoes with the urethane soles. Learn on easy slopes,or on flats, but be sure it's wide, smooth tar.Parking garages are excellent places to get it figured,as the concrete is very smooth, and there's room for figuring out one-footed steering. It takes a LIGHT touch,so DON'T Stomp Down on your braking foot.Once you've got the basics, then head for steeper terrain, but don't hurry it any.

I have just learned a new slide where you do a 2 wheeled toe side 180 and then you pull it arouind 4 wheeled to make a complete 360. I am also learning to do these out of flim flams.

i learned a nifty slide, going about 15 -20 mph then crunching grabbing the rail and stretching out my hand into a heelside slide and as i complete the 180 turn i swap hand positions and pull the slide back... is there a name for this manuever, i think ive heard it called a cradle...

get into the position with your rear leg's foot on its side like shown in the pics on hc's site. lean back as hard as you can turning. i put the hand/s down as soon as i start turning and put a lot of weight on them to avoid highsides.

coleman slide, again
On 4/22/2004 henry wrote in from (172.179.nnn.nnn)

I am trying to learn colemans just to be able to stop at higher speeds- after some serious practising the last days i can cause the back wheels to slide out pretty predictably when carving hard to heelside, but then end up running out with the board shooting out from under me. My problem seems to be to find the right moment for placing my hand on the ground. How do you guys do that? Just before the slide? Or when the wheels are sliding yet? I watched some sliding videos linked on here and was also reading through hc's site (great info, man), but still didn't get the point... at least i need to practise, i know, but some help would be appreciated... thanks, henry

heelside slides
On 4/22/2004 Airin wrote in from (207.6.nnn.nnn)

Thanks for your suggestions hc. When I re-read Cliff's suggestions for slides it was more an impression, based on the way he emphasized heelside slides, that lead me to think that it was the harder of the two slides to learn.
Most importantly I think I figured out what will help me improve my heelside slides to the point where they start to become predictable like my toeside slides. I need to be moving the free hand in the direction of the turn. Cliff suggests that this will do a lot for initiating the slide and will help control the turn.
So I'll be working on that part of my slide technique next. Of course any other tips for helping me speed up my learning curve with regards to heelside slides are always welcome.
thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by really fast, but if you can carve all over the road that'll slow you down. also parked cars are good, mailboxes, and crossing gaurds would love to lend a hand!
