Anyone tried soft stuff? For slalom, I want something to keep my front foot in place, (and don't want a 'stopper'), so i was thinking of, grippy material. That "soft top" stuff feels pretty good but not sticky enough. So i'm thinking of adding to my regular tape. SHOO GOO. My plan: squeeze out a series of parallel thin stripes, across the deck where my front foot goes, and a little foward of that too. um, you try it.

I have childhood memories of walking into the local skate shop and being overwhelmed by the smell of griptape! It may have been the reason why I kept going back to purchase more schtuff...

If you like that black Wooster, you'd love Beer City Hardcore grip tape. It's super gritty like the black Wooster, but it lasts much longer. On the black Wooster grip I've used, it kinda scrubs off and gets smoohter. The BC grip lasts a super long time, I've got some deck I gripped with it years ago, still as grippy as ever. Yet another two pennies.

Now that we're on the subject, I'll put in my 0.02. The Wooster standard black grip that oldschoolskate.com sells is simply the best griptape I've ever used. Not only is it 10" wide, so it actually fits my boards, but it seems to have some coarser grit mixed in, so it really grips your foot. The 9" crap from the local shop (Shorty's I believe) isn't nearly as good at keeping my foot on. Pizza grip is too course and doesn't work very well. The Wooster is thicker and harder to cut, though, so not the best for art projects.

Cool link KMG and I like the reference to MC Escher. If you and Kaylee want to see something more of that sort I have this board which I taped during the week following 9/11 and it is displayed at hughr's Viewer Quivers page (somewhere in the middle). This one was done on a ZooYork deck and I'd have to say that it was truly inspired...

Flying with your equipement is easy. Just be sure the baggage tag sticks and don't forget to mark it "Fragile", just in case!

This math nerd definitely approves. Very M.C. Escher-esque, at least as close as you're gonna get and still have functional grip. Way to go, Alan!

Thanks Michael, most every board I work on has an effect on the eventual outcome. This deck originated in Hawaii and the fact that C-Money and his honey just got back from a vacation on Maui and Kauai made me think it would be appropriate to do this bassk8weave design...

Hey, that's my 8-wheeler! Beautiful, Al, thanks. Can't wait to hook up tonight at OakSt for a slalom session and pick it up. I may have to run home and get the trucks and wheels I bought for it and assemble it with the knuckleheads!
I got a great deal on this one, Al thanks again!

Thanks Hugh! Check out this project I just finished for C-Money. It took some thought to try to lighten up an 8-wheeler and then many hours to pull it off (lots of sleepless nights)...

Blair: I've been gathering some of the information you are looking for and presenting them on a page for just that purpose. I'd be interested in seeing if anybody else out there has any ideas to share. My stuff is only now going out to the test pilot program so you might not see it for yet another month.

But that's only 1/2 of what you need for protection. I have a set of Vanson leathers, and a set of Texport, both excellent names. I got the Vanson used and the Texport new and paid around $200 for each, which is competitive with $100 just for pants. The jeans might be a good alternative for city or light bombing when leathering up is a big hassle, coupled with a second-hand, tight fitting leather jacket. I'd like to see a review with respect to skating. Keep in mind that you don't get dumped from a motorcycle every day, its one-time protection essentially, whereas with skating (luging, etc) you can take two spills inside of 5 minutes. Trust me.

Word up to the Torontonians and people in that general area (Buffalo)-- There are plentiful 2nd-hand motorbike full leathers in the 2nd hand/thrift clothing shops all along one street near Kensington market (can't remember the street). You might score some good ones, too.

About cheap leathers or cheap protection .i read a post a while back which said you can make a set of poor mans leathers bye getting 2 pairs of jeans and cut the crutch out of 1 pair and then sew the 2 pairs together with 1 pair inside the other thus giving you double thickness denim with a single layer around the bed flute region for comfort.

I have had a lot of different skate tools. Most have been borrowed by friends that somehow seem to 'forget' to return them or lose them all together. I got a Unit tool for free a few years ago and actually like it better than any of the ones I've bought. Other tools I've had worked, but were awkward and slow. One of the worst tools I've ever had was a Gullwing Six-Pack (also one of the most expensive). The tolerances were worse than bad, the steel used to manufacture it seemed really soft, and the 3/8" socket fell off within a couple of months.
This would be the tool I would like to see someone manufacture (with sockets in the right sizes, of course):
Warning about the Unit tool: Use an O-ring or rubberband to keep the allen key in the handle (they seem to fall out pretty easily).

vaso, I would suggest buying the Turner cones instead of those soccer cones. That same hundred bucks will het you 50 cones and they will last your lifetime. I had 50 of those soccer cones and sold them at half what I paid for them since I`ve gotten my Turner cones (thanks Howard)
Don`t get me wrong, the soccer cones are better than nothing but I think $100 is better spent on quality cones.

yo guys and gals, leathers are nice arent they? well thats if you have them! does any one know where i can get leathers patterns on the net so i could sew my own? Also is it essential that "leathers" be made of leather? isnt there a cheaper alternative that would still offer some protection and would be fairly strong, i badly need to get myself together, cos i want to do the DHX in Cape Town next year. would nylon work ? any ideas? thanks.
