sk8 in Ottawa
On 9/9/2004 mbl wrote in from Canada  (70.48.nnn.nnn)

this is gr8! i think micheal brooke meant there was a girl in the next wave section in the next issue.. watch for boys from the ottawa sk8park too!
i sk8'd for about three weeks when i was a teenager on a board my dad bought me in miami...i lived in mtl. and wasn't hooked up with anyone else who sk8'd
two years ago, my boys were in a skateboarding workshop with their homeschool group given by the city of ottawa and coached by claude regnier - last year they did the same workshop again and i couldn't sit on the sidelines any longer! july 4 2003 i stood for the first time on a slalom board and haven't looked back - i started riding slalom with claude and four months later we opened the ottawa sk8park so that other sk8rs (and ourselves!) would have a place to ride in ottawa in the winter
i started riding transition in our park and this year the guys at kebbek set me up with a smokin' downhill longboard! (independant trucks and 3dm wheels)(my slalom board is kebbek with tracker trucks and abec 11 stingers)
i love it all

Bravo to NCDSA for starting this forum. Being the father of two girls, one of which is 11 and is starting to get interest in this "old man"'s sport I am glad to see a place I can direct her to see that "girls really do skate and then skate well!".

Frank: Great pic of the the two women tearing the slalom up! What dude skater on this planet doesn't want to see pics like that one? Skater chics rock! Fit, good looking, and talented! Stoked to the max.

Sometimes I feel like I can only give so much input that instead of giving ideas, it becomes whining, b!tching, and complaining. I wanted this forum stream to exist. Almost asked for it, but I guess, in a roundabout way I did.
Thanks for listening Adam.

Yay, Laura (Betty) showed me this site today, and that there was now a womens forum up and going. Im excited.

It is awesome looking and seeing you women that have been skating for years and still love it. Ive just gotten into it, and I hope that in 20, 30, even 40 years Im still into it just as much. I started off trying to street skate, but Im just not much for it, summin' did work for me, about 9 months ago I got into slalom and met some awesome people and have just loved it!

But again, so glad I found this now. Girl skaters are too awesome. Yay!

Any female park or pool sk8rz reading this in the SF Bay area-please email me if you know of a girlz sesh going on.

Awesome new message board! I was just enjoying reading the previous posts.
According to a recent Time magazine article, girls/women make up 25% of all skateboarders. We are a minority, but it's not as small as I thought. Heck, I skated for a year before I ever got a decent park board and got out to parks. Unfortunately I rarely see other women at parks. Not sure why that is. The guys I skate with are super welcoming and laid back.

Hey, I'm superglad to see some women older than me posting on here. I'm turning 36 this week and am trippin' out on it a bit. You all keep me inspired!

I think its really cool that NCDSA has a women's forum.
For all you guys out there, don't let this make you feel insecure.
It's just that we are pretty much always in the minority in the skate world.
It's nice to have a little corner where that isn't necessarily the case.
Your opinions and comments are still valid and welcome to us!

J: I bet you'll really like the snake run. I have never been on a real one, would love to travel to Albequerq... (sp?) and skate the monster ditch someday, but until then, there is a water park a couple of hours from me called Wet Willies that closes during the winter months, and it was one of the most fun times I've ever had skateboarding in my life, very narrow, very steep walls, very twisty and turny, just a lot of fun to play on. I am not super up-to-speed on the terms and equipment, but am getting progressively more learned.
M. Brooke: "Look for our first female" I got a concrete wave that has Isabelle, kim cespedes, others in it from Winter 2002. ? What do you mean, your first female?

Toukley, Australia

betty,
I will be 46 in a few days. I started riding ATB with my husband boyd and a friend paul carey. both have a long history on skateboards. anyway started on a frame board and now i ride a MBS comp16 pro. in april, 2003 i entered the first atb comp in australia. it was boarder x and an open event. i didn't make it past the first round, but happy i gave it a shot. since then i have gone in any 'downhill' event i could, still not making it past the first round, but my times are improving and i'm pretty happy with that. in july i was lucky enough to be part of the first organised women's atb races in australia. it was dual slalom out at the san remo extreme sports park. we had 5 competitors ranging in age from 10 years (my youngest daughter, Imogen) to me at 46. anyway it was pretty exciting to be part of that event. we have an association here on the central coast, atb central coast inc. and we had a session at a local indoor skate venue, 'the slam factory' at Tuggerah. anyway that is where i started on a skateboard. hadn't been on one for a long, long, long, long time. enjoyed that so we went to a few carparks, footpaths etc. couldn't tell you what sort of gear i am using as not up to speed on that yet, still just trying stay on. at the end of the month we are travelling down to victoria to enter a downhill event. the trip is about 1,000klms and on the way i am going to try out my first 'snake-run' at some parks on the way.
as for the koals, i hope not.
regards
Jacquie

As publisher of Concrete Wave, I must tell you all that we are committed to showcasing more females. I invite you to send as many photos as you can. Longboarding, slalom, ditches, pools, parks, street, freestyle...send em up to me!

Look for our first female to appear in the next wave section in November issue.

Send photos (300 dpi) to concretewave@front.ru or send me slides or disks

Adam,

Thanks for posting this section. This way we can chat without all the other dialogue to dig through. It doesn't mean you can't chat in other spots. It just gives us a spot to chat. I didn't see you at Breck and wish you'd of come up and chatted. I haven't seen you since the GGP race in SF.

Sasha it was great skating with you the other day. Hope you mom is feeling better. We had a great session on Thursday. There was a head wind so it was more work trying to go fast then it was the other day when it was all about trying to scrub speed to make the end section. Keep in touch so we can meet up again.

I'm stoked so many more women and girls are skating. I've skated since I was 13 and now I'm almost 45. It's not a sport for girlfriends and wifes to be sitting on the sidelines watching. There are not enough women skating at these races and not enough in the parks. I've raced long enough and still find it fun. But I am hoping a crop of new racers will take over and kick some butt.

I'm the only woman racer that has raced 2 World Championships in a row. I think Isabelle will be back this year which will be great. She is super fast and is great at helping new riders figure out the courses. Isabelle got me back into the Giant Slalom thing after a 20 year break. Terry Brown I'm sure will be on hand as well since her daughter Keli is amazingly fast. At all these races there are always early morning kids races. It's a perfect opportunity for the folks that have never raced before. Breck had several new young boys and girls turn out.

Sharon you have been missed at the races. I hope to see you again on the banks or hills. Remember you took a long break and how great it was to get back on it. Keep skating.

Skate safe and often!

i dont think we are banned posting? - i am jacqu's husband
it has been great to have someone to go boarding with (mostly mountainboards but we are skating as well- its all boarding to me)
the main thing is that she has been getting out there and riding in front of and with people and competing in open boarding events (increasingly better all the time.)
the media stereo types here in aus are very narrow when it comes to sk8 and atb (extreme and youth are the two sound bites) so she has been opening people's eyes to boarding for women
ps - i wish i could afford randals ($150 a pair)

YAY!
On 9/3/2004 betty wrote in from United States  (24.170.nnn.nnn)

YAY! A wimmins forum! I'm so stoked! I found a ditch today- I work for a small lawfirm in Jackson, MS. I had to pick my boss up from the SAAB place today, and on our way back to the office we got stuck in traffic at a light when I started yelling in excitement about this dry ditch- it's been rainy here- and he says, "Good for you. A ditch. The light's been green for a minute." He thinks I'm nuts, but I FOUND A DITCH! Tranny looks nice, one side just a little steeper than the other, I'm so excited.
On another note...
Jacquie: how old are you? Who did you start skating with 5 years ago? Is it true that the koalas may be extinct in five years? I have always loved Australia, Paul Hogan, and koalas. What kind of longboard do you have? My very first time slaloming I won my favorite board, a 36" Comet park board, I ride it with 159 Indys and Kryptos, but I think I may switch out to Randal 150s 'cause they're turnier and I like Gumballs wheels, they so soft and fluffy. When I am racing, though, I ride a Keith Hollien Roe, I just got some gRippins wheels and they seem pretty clutch.
I am 22, been skating about two years, started off street, switched to just carving and bombing hills, found slalom and loved it, and now I just get my kicks trying all the disciplines of skating. I love bowls and pools...
Do you have any female skateboarders you look up to? My hero is Isabelle Caudle. I'm real scared of heights, and I like to think of her before I roll off ramps or try anything new, it helps me out. YAY!

From the webmaster..

I'm ashamed to admit that it took us nearly 8-years to create this forum for women riders. But better late than never! Women make up too small a percentage of our favorite skateboarding sports; this forum will hopefully create a coalescing point for woman slalom, longboard, downhill, freestyle, etc riders and kick-off a new growth trend.

Thanks goes out to Lynn Kramer for bending my ear at Breck over the plight of women in competitive slalom skateboarding. I essentially told Lynn, "Don't gripe; go out and create growth." Here's my first creation.
