Class of 1980 Parsippany High School
My band played punk rock at the Show Place in Dover along with The Ramones, Cheap Trick, Rush, Plasmatics, and every other band that came through Jersey that year.
I had a huge halfpipe in my parent's backyard and I skated it with Scooter and Tuna. Now we skate the halfpipe in Scooter's backyard - it's gonna suck when his kids get older and start snakin' runs.

College Park High School 1977-1981, Pleasant Hill, CA (except for first semester of my Junior year went to Ygnacio Valley in Walnut Creek to get away from my old friends who were making bad decisions).
Cat: thanks for posting the info on 1977. Brings back so many memories. I still like a lot of those songs today!

Anyway - my HS was in Chappaqua, NY (aka Clintonville)...built our first quarter-pipe on my street in late 1977...
I'm writing a piece, with period photos, about that whole experience for Jack's new book. What a great life!

I truly consider 1977 one of the best years of my life. Growing up in Casper Wyoming was awesome, and I wouldn’t have traded it for anything. Everything was so fun & innocent back then…. the 70’s in general were like that.
Just look at our California Governator in 1977! This is the year "Pumping Iron" was released. It made Arnold Schwarzenegger a household name.

The average age at last weekends IGSA downhill race was like 20 years old.
So funny because I was sitting so long at the top waiting for my heat that when it came my body stiffened up and all most came off my board trying to grab my rail before the hard right at the bottom. At the start line it is unlimited kick so you can kick as hard as you like, had the biggest smile one run when the four of us where kicking and I stopped, whent into my tuck and one kid was still kicking all the way around the 1st turn,he was 16 I think.
By the time egough riders get to the over 40 age for me to race downhill masters I will be like 80 years old. Awhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !
Fun as heck to see so many young guns coming out of the wood work and I just hope that this is only the start for a strong American force in Downhill skateboard racing.
I was so impressed by how many there where and the fans and spectators has grown over night as well.
You want bigger crowds ? Just get about 30 kids under 20 years old and you have there Moms, Dads, friends, and kin all showing up to watch . You get alot of people coming to races.
Fun to watch and thats maybe where I am heading in a few years !

Really looking forward to hangin' with my peers for a change when I get back Stateside, its been hard in Europe having no option but to race the likes of Dominik and Ramon.
Over here in all divisions the youngsters are finally pushing the oldies off the podiums...regularly! Its hard to compare Open and Pro times as especially in Tight and Hybrid the Pros run technically more difficult courses, but the Open/Ams/Women are smokin'and more and more young riders are at the top of the heap as it should be!
A Masters category sounds like its FUN though, an element that sometimes gets lost in the heat of competition.

I loved our Open class HY podium in Morro...not an under 40 (45?) year old in the bunch! Stryker (age?), me, Marty...but look out - next time there is Open Masters crossover I'm doing both!
If/when guys like Pirnack and Fluitt start racing masters I think it will be great. I race in a 40-49 age group in snowboarding and we have former open and pro guys dropping back down into our division often - and they are FAST, that's just the way it is. It has made me train much harder and also made me much faster chasing them. At the 2007 USASA Nationals slalom we had 114 racers - all age groups from 18 years old and up (no Open though) - and the podium ages for the overall results (all 114 racers) went 44 gold, 45 silver, 21 bronze.
Viva old dudes indeed!!

Fluitt told me at the Nationals that he was looking forward to a Masters class. If guys like Fluitt start running Masters then we will have to have a Masters Pro & Open division. Who's next, Pirnack????
BTW, I really give props to Jack for A. Having a Masters at a big event & B. Allowing for the crossover into the open.
I wasn't going to run Masters until he devised that plan. I still feel competitive in the Open until I run into a situation like the Worlds where I drew Martin Reaves in the 2nd round on both the Hybrid & Tight. Back to back days of chasing his 17 year old ass down a hill would make anyone feel thier oats.
The Masters is cool. I certainly will not avoid an event if they don't have it, it just makes it nice to up the podium odds every now and then.
And for the guys that voiced objection AFTER I podiumed the Open Hybrid too at the Nationals. Remember what I said....I'm 48, beat me.

Having a Master's class at both Morro Bay and Hood River was really fun. I hope this class start up takes hold and there are many more like races. The way it was running, we still get times for comparison with Open and even Pro classes and we get a podium all our own to compete for.
