Anyone remember a pro contest that happened back in the 70's in Ocean City Maryland, at the convention center? I believe Ernie Martin lost at that contest, beat by a guy they called "Grasshopper"?

After all these years...
On 1/13/2014 Ernie Martin wrote in from United States  (68.36.nnn.nnn)

Came across this website with my son last night. Hard to believe that my name is still circulating out there after all these years. It's been 37 years since I set the Guinness High Jump Record. Missed having two world records by one barrel in the barrel jump against Tony Alva at the Long Beach Arena. I've been married for 33 years and have a 19 year old son playing Lacrosse in college. Time marches on! I would love to hear from some of my old friends, competitors and fellow 70s skaters. Hey Brian Beardsley, I would love to chat if you still visit this site.

High Jump World Record
On 8/2/2012 Jani Soderhall wrote in from France  (213.163.nnn.nnn)

I was watching this old video of Brian Beardsley reposted on facebook:
http://youtu.be/560bojtJTiw

I just want to add to the discussion that my understanding is that Trevor Baxter has the world record and I would agree with this statement that I found on YouTube:

"I don't speak German, but die 'weltrekord' was set in England in 1982 at 1.67m by a guy called Trevor Baxter. Try harder."

I even think I have a blurry picture of Trevor, but need to look it up if it was exactly this occasion.

@NJ Guy
I've been looking for Huck Andress for several years and there is no sign of him anywhere. I wanted to do some interviews with him. No idea where he is. He's off the grid. Good for him.

I've also been looking for Ernie Martin. I saw his son posted here awhile back, but he left no email or other contact info. If you see this, please contact me. I would like to chat with Ernie about some history, and we have some mutual friends, the Bentleys. Cheers.

Does anyone know whatever happened to Huck Andress? We were in cub scouts together as kids when he lived in NJ and his name recently came up in conversation with another old classmate.

I realize this forum is very old , but I just stumbled upon it, couldn't help responding.
In response to GBJ on 11/9/2004. Grasshopper is a guy by the name Of Mike Bryan. He skated with Belair Boards out of Bowie Maryland in 1977. He had special boards made for him by Belair Boards. Prior to the event you spoke of, Mike would quiet often break out his high jump gear and just mess around. He did that at a small school yard freestyle contest in North Philadelphia, Huck Andress was a touring Pro at the time with G & S skateboards, up until that time I'd never seen Mike even attempt anything over 4'5". That day he shattered his own record by jumping 5'0". He got some recognition after that and was invited to a contest in Ocean Cty Md in 1977? I recall the event was covered by Sportsworld and Mike went up against Ernie Martin and beat him! He jumped over an MG then with Ernie. After that Mike went on to the Long Beach invitational. and toured with Belair boards performing halftime shows at NFL games. and even did a local Honda commercial in Va.

a new world record?

the other day I found a recent clip of a guy doing a 1.6 m highjump.
They claim it to be the new world record, but I know that Trevor Baxter went over 1.6m; like a 1.63m

Nevertheless a good jump..
Go to youtube.com
Then type in: Endless Grind 2011 - 1,60m Hochsprung (Weltrekord)

I can't believe Brian Beardsley is posting here, the internet brings boy hood heros closer! I remember watching Brian's jumps on a short snippet of TV in an interest piece. I thought it was really cool and professional only ever having jumped over supermarket trolleys at that point.

Sadly I have no video from those days but I can just about manage a picture. This is from 1979 in Glasgow, Scotland at a height of 5'2". Sadly all the photos I have of anything higher are mistimed so I'm either going up or coming down.... :-)

Its really interesting to see this and the posts are so recent. I really thought that Skateboard High Jump had disappeared in the 80's as my generation got too old for it :-) It is really good to see that people are still competing in this.

He held the high jump record at 5'3", does anyone know if that was broken? you can still find an advertisement of him, type "ernie martin clamper trucks" into google, and go onto the website that has something to do with vintage cal streets.
