LOOP

Hey Joe,

Yeah, I used to ride the Turning Point Ramp
with Kent and The Jerr. Unfortunatly I don't
have any photos of me riding it.

I do have this shot of me blasting one of the first
early big backside airs at Reseda using Suspenders...

Image hosted by TinyPic.com

I would love to see some shots of the TP ramp...

Turning Point
On 4/4/2005 GI Joe wrote in from United States  (65.19.nnn.nnn)

Hold on just a minute! Who's looping who? The Turning Point ramp was also not a "real" loop because it was tilted at a slight angle to allow you to pick up needed speed for the loop. I would still say that it was the first loop because so many rippers did it and were then forgotten. I did it at Marina del Rey during the year it was there, though I never got to the second rib. Sure, it was a few degrees shy of upside down, but no pillows, run outs or tracks. See the recent issue of Concrete Wave with a double page spread of Jerry Valdez looping it frontside back in '78. Jer, Kent Senatore and Polar Bear were among several guys that could loop it 3 ribs out, even multiple loops! Cradles are cool, but what I want is another Turning Point! Hey Hackett, did you ever ride it?

Loop

Dan,

They put the track in after Duane broke his collar bone. That is of course after he had succesfully looped it trackless.

Loop etc
On 4/2/2005 Dan Gesmer / Seismic + 3dm wrote in from United States  (67.40.nnn.nnn)

Don O'Shei, nice to see you posting after a long absence. Regarding the loop, I remember that Skitch Hitchcock skated a loop on a track (with the board mechanically fixed to a track) as part of the short-lived "Skateboard Mania" touring stage production. Like the Hackett brothers' Suspender-assisted aerials, perhaps not considered "real" by some. But did the "Skateboard Mania" loop-on-a-track come before or after the loop runs by DP and John Walker?

I HATE TO ALSO...
On 4/1/2005 HACKETT - BLACK LEATHER RACING wrote in from United States  (68.71.nnn.nnn)

Hey Don, you know how it goes; I hate to disagree also,
but do you REALLY think Alva threw the first air?

Was Gelfand the first to throw the first ollie?

How about Olson? Was he the first to throw down the Layback?

How about the backside air or Invert? Was it Jay? Wally? Me?
You? Who?

We all may have some insight as to what actually happened on
those historic days; but usually someone gets all the credit.

I'm claiming Duane did the loop first. I wasn't there. Maybe
you were. I would love to see the photos or footage proving otherwise...

I have photos of my brother and I blasting 3-6 foot airs before TA's hand held air at the Dogbowl using "Suspenders" - Oh, but that wasn't considered REAL air because we were using straps. I guess Laird Hamilton's 60 foot waves are'nt REAL either because he's strapped in.

I think George Orton and Kevin Reed were blasting airs about the same time TA was...why does he get all the credit? Was it because Friedman took the shot?
Was it because TA's were WAY more stylish? (Tuck knee vs Stinkbug)

It all depends on what you're perspective is...we all know who really did what and when...

Loop
On 4/1/2005 Don O'Shei wrote in from United States  (64.168.nnn.nnn)

Hackett

I hate to disagree with a legend but DP wasn't exactly the firts to try the Loop. I was there that day at the ramp factory when they were trying the loop with the air bag. There were two riders taking turns trying it, DP and John Walker from the Sims Team. They both tried over and over and Walker was the only one to make it all the way around with the bag that day. It was an unbelievable smash fest as the run in ramp was very narrow and sketchy. I did hear that DP made it without the bag another day and all Kudos to him. It was a broken neck waiting to happen. I do think however, that Walker was one of the overlooked talents of that time.

Agree With Palmer
On 3/28/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

I agree with Palmer. Skateboarding is skatboarding no matter what the discipline.
Before we held our DHB Jam this past weekend I stopped the young street skaters around town and invited them to come out, try slalom (we had a hybrid, a tight, and a Super G all set up with in view of each other), try some longboard carving/downhilling. Many of our crew brought our entire quiver of boards and shared them with many of the people that came out including several of the street skaters I had invited. With encouragement they all quickly became stoked about one form or another. One of our crew that skates street brought a portable rail and set up it so that these "kids" could also show their stuff. Some of them gravitated toward slalom, others to the longboards. Either way we exposed them to our side of the sport while also "honoring" theirs. Of course we "discouraged" with the threat of bodily harm any of them from kick flipping our foam cores but otherwise it was just full on skating stoke.
IMHO (I'm a nobody so it is very humble) it's time to walk away from the old school/new school battle and just focus on the sport as a whole. Dudes like Hackett, Olson, Peters, Chicken etc. just plain rip anything they ride! Jason Mitchell rips concrete, wood, asphalt, and water! My point is the same as Palmer's...It's skating Bro! Fuel the Stoke! Which ever direction you ride, flip, wiggle, hop, ollie, grind, jump, slide, etc etc etc!

Hackett and Olson..Dudes, this forum rocks! Good luck in Paris! Tear the place down!

Kids
On 3/28/2005 Chris wrote in from United States  (216.243.nnn.nnn)

There's definitely kids around that "get it". If you don't flow, you don't go. I was up at skate school on Saturday, and those kids get it, a lot! It is so cool to session with little kids who just totally have that pure juice. Totally fun. Me and some kid were doing backside airs, just pushing each other. It was so cool.

By the way, Is there anything funnier than seeing some 12 year old walking down the sidewalk CARRYING his skate?

NEW SCHOOLERS, OLD SCHOOLERS ITS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE OF STANDING ON THAT PIECE OF WOOD WITH WHEELS. I ENJOY A 360 FLIP AS MUCH AS SMITH GRIND. ALOT OF THESE KIDS CANT DRIVE YET AND DO NOT HAVE ANYONE TO TAKE THEM ANYWHERE. I WOULD RATHER HAVE THEM DOING KICKFLIPS IN THIER DRIVEWAY THEN NOT SKATING AT ALL. AS YOU GET OLDER ITS EAISER TO GET OUT THERE AND FIND NEW STUFF TO SKATE.
