O.K... So I found out about Purple Skunk skate in Concrete Wave magazine. I visited their website with some questions, and after an almost immediate response from Lizzie I knew I had to hit the shop the next time I visited my sister in San Fransisco. WOW! Big kids toy store supreme.
I've gotten back into skating via longboards this last couple years, and have never seen such a selection of goodies. Did I mention Lizzie and the gang are friendly, knowledgeable, and cool!
The thing about their store I found most amazing, was the demo section. I mean, you won't believe the selection of ride before you buy combinations they have. I've wanted to switch gear and upgrade, but didn't know what to buy because no one I knew had the gear for me to ride. And I'm not going to buy blind and sit on the gear if I don't like it. So I know having such an extensive demo section is a big finacial commitment, but what a pay off for the customer. Thank you Purple Skunk!
I must have taken 8-10 boards out for a spin in the course of a half hour. And it really hepled me make up my mind on what to buy then, and in the future. Plus, it was a blast to just kick around the block on all those different set ups. This shop rocks! I will visit evry time I go to San Fransisco.
So if you're ever in the Bay area, you gotta hit the Skunk. You won't be disappointed. And all you other serious skate shops out there take heed! It's worth it for you to provide even just a few boards for your customers to ride, so they know what they want. You'll create rabid loyalty by doing so.
Thanks Lizzie and the rest of the crew at Purple Skunk!
...Just another mid-life kook trying to carve some turns and have a good time in this crazy stress filled world. Craig...Portalnd, Or.

Lizzie and Gang, It was simply an awesome and fun experience at your shop last friday! Never before have I seen a skateshop that had Abec 11's, 3DMs, Seismics, Landyachtzs, Fibreflexs, etc... on display! And I dont know any cooler sales folk than you or Eli. Being deaf, a lot of people freeze up and dont know how to "act" when dealing with us. But the way you guys were, it was as if we were friends for a long time. The world definitely needs more people of your kind. The purple skunk isnt just a skateshop, it is Mecca and a longboarder would know this just as soon as they step in the store. I wont be writing to Santa Claus any more since I will now go to your shop for all of my skating needs. And have some laughs too!
Stay fly, Mark P.S. the cutaway with 3DMs and biltins was really sweet!!

I think Purple Skunk sounds a lot like our own Brixton Cycles! (even to the point of me knowing they treat deaf customers like any other,Mark!) A great store, with enthusuatic staff. And a skatepark 20 feet away. Sounds like NY needs a 'purple Cycles' branch soon!

I ordered new trucks at palermo 2 weeks ago, and even though I live in the Netherlands (Europe) it took only 1 week to ship! And with some help of they guys at Palermo I didn’t even had to pay import or custom taxes!! Tnx dudes. They also give great advise to people building boards, and if you doubt about what trucks/wheels to use this, is the place to go for advice.

Fishtail boards?

Was wondering if there might be a chance that there are any independent companies out there coming out with a modern spec fishtail deck in the neighborhood of 9.5"-10" x 32.5"-33"? A deck not unlike the stubby little reissues, but with the length, width, tail and nose length(rounded shovel nose)of something like the BL RC Duane board?
If not, please pass this onto the companies you support.
Thanks.

This is the least I could do for Lizzie and the Purple Skunk team in SF. I recently purchased some ultimate longboard and slalom equipment via the on line service from London England. Lizzie has been professional, courteous and extremely helpful in delivering the goods (plus some goodies for my son). My son was over the moon when he got his G & S board he still can't believe how long the wheels spin when he turns them. I would just like to say thanks once again to Purple Skunk and a special thanks to Lizzie. Fully recommend this shop distance is no barrier.

Skateboard Mom (the book)

Hi all. My name is Barbara Odanaka. I skated for the Hobie amateur team in the late 1970s and still skate daily. Along with being founder of the International Society of Skateboarding Moms, I'm a children's book author. My first book, SKATEBOARD MOM, will be published this May by G.P. Putnam's Sons, an imprint of Penguin Putnam. The story is about a boy who gets the ultimate birthday gift--a skateboard--only to watch his mom take off with it and become a skate goddess in the process. I'm wondering if any skate shop owner (or skate magazine editor) would be interested in receiving a free copy of the book (obviously in hopes that you'd like to offer SKATEBOARD MOM for sale in your store once it's officially published in May). I can only send about a dozen free copies (past that, it comes out of my pocket) so please let me know as soon as possible if you're interested. If you'd like to see the book's cover, or learn more about me, visit my website, www.skateboardmom.com. Thanks! Barbara Odanaka p.s. I'm also looking for other skateboarding moms as freelance for a variety of publications, including the Los Angeles Times, and am planning on writing a variety of features about moms who skate.
