ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wear your protective gear. Two days ago
me and some friends were luging a monster hill. My buddy Andrew
went first and the rest of us followed. He had to brake a bit
because of a rough patch in the road. I didn't see him stopping,
and rammed right into the back of his board sending him in a 50+
mph slide down the road! 214 stitches, 5 staples in his noggin
and loads of cash later, he's wishing he would have spent the
extra $50-$150 for a helmet. Be cool, wear a helmet and watch out
for your friends.

Always wear your helmet. I was going downhill, 40mph, and I hit a dead pussycat on the side of the road. I went flying, and now I have a scar going from my forehead to the middle of my chest. Always wear your pads.

When I first started I thought pads and stuff were cheesy. You change your mind quick after taking a nose dive at 30 mph. Keep the gear on. Oh, and watch out for sidestreets. Driver aren't looking for you so you gotta look for them.

These new Xenon lights (the blue very light ones) on the middle class cars (Mercedes, BMW, Audi, ...) suck really
Here in Switzerland they became very popular in the last time (for the car drivers, not for us). You can't see
anything when a car with these lights drives against your direction. Be careful because of the thing that Sandy M wrote too.
The fuck is, that the drivers with these lights feel themselves in the roll of the king of the street and they drive very arrogant(IN SWITZERLAND)

For all you night-time riders out there: TAKE NOTE! The new headlights on some of the newer german cars (BMW, Mercedes, VWs) dont show up as clearly as traditional style lights. The patch of light that they make on the ground ahead of the car isnt as big as the traditional style, meaning if you're counting on the car's lights to warn you of traffic approaching from a side street, you could be fooled. Keep yer eyes peeled, dudes!

Dont bomb down steep hills and hit drain covers that arent on properly, as you tend to fly up in the air, land and break your collarbone. :O)

It took a nasty header that required 10 stiches in my eyebrow before i learned that safety gear is a must - It makes the differnce between taking a spill and being able to walk (skate) away from it, and having to hustle to the Emergency Room- I doubt that I would still be riding at 26 if i didn't wear wear a helmet, knee and elbow pads

I was skating in the park with my bro. I was just behind him, and we were going just over walking speed. Suddenly, he slipped on some wet leaves and fell backwards off his board, banging the back of his head on the pavement. He was in fucking pain, screaming really loud. When I felt the back of his head there was a lump sticking out of his head about 1/2 AN INCH! We went to the hospiral and he was OK. From then on I and he have always worn a cycle helmet when skating. Its small, light, and easy to carry.

Stephen and Andy, listen to what Chris is saying, there are just too many variables out there to not take a chance by not wearing your safety gear. Even if you are the best, and have top of the line equipement, you can't control what someone else might do, or conditions you might run across. Just recently I sprained my ankle when I took off down a steep imbankment at a skatepark, only to have to abort the run due to someone cutting me off. I was'nt even trying some sick new trick, just tried to stop and I got hurt. You never know. Skateboarding is great fun, maybe even a way of life, but it's not worth getting permanently injured over, or worse. Protect yourself, now that would be cool!

"Okay, Mom, we'll wear the helmets." You'll earn valuable brownie points for when you start asking for the car keys in a couple of years.
Seriously, I know you think it's uncool to wear a helmet, but you want to know what's really uncool: How about 6 weeks in a coma in the neurological intensive care unit from smashing your melon on the concrete? How permanent brain damage? How about having to learn to walk again or write your own name? How about fucking dying?
I know you think that it won't happen to you, but you know what? Five or six people have died riding skateboards in San Diego county in the last two years, and none of them were wearing helmets. And I bet you that none of them thought it would ever happen to them.
It doesn't matter how good you are. You can fuck yourself up bad if you go down wrong and you're not wearing the brain bucket. Think about this. What if you break the kingpin on your trucks or hit a slick patch on the concrete, because some guy just over-oiled his bearings. You have no control over that. It doesn't matter how good you are. Shit just happens.
If you're on the street, cars come out of nowhere or a little "Yo quiero Taco Bell" Chihuahua runs in front of you. You don't see a crack in the road, because you're looking for traffic (or that chick with the nice butt). Any of these things that you have no control over can happen. And it doesn't matter how good a skater you are. You go down wrong, you're screwed.
I know this isn't the answer you're looking for. I know your friends are going to give you crap, but you can deal with that a lot easier than you can deal with the consequences of a bad fall.
Skate hard and skate safe.

I was at a skatepark and I was on top of a shed. I felt a little nervous about going off. I went off and tried to do a backflip and broke 3 of my ribs, dislocated my shoulder and
I took the skin off my arm. This story is a lie but you shouldn't do crazy stuff if you don't know how to.

All you kids out their who are too cool to wear a helmet should wise up. I was a good friend of Ryan Costello(see above article), and was skating with him when he fell. If your reason for wearing a helmet is style, than you should get some self respect and protect your head. word
