and to add I feel there is a HUGE differance between Corporate commercialism and skateboard industry's commercialism. I personally can't stand the later and could write a short story...but i'll hit the skatepark instead. good thing the lights are on till 10pm. Later.

what do you want to be when you grow up????
i wanna be a pro speedboarder (or insert luge, surfer, bmx, etc) when i grow up just like Biker! --------------------------------------------- ---------
i know kids are saying this .... my nephew does, kids at the skateparks wanna be Tony Hawk or Matt Hoffman, along the beaches its Kelly Slater, Dorian, Garcia, etc.
when i was a kid i played with mud, rocks, cardboard and the occasional toy car and legos. now days you find kids with their favorite tech deck finger luge and finger speedboard of Lee Dansie,Sean Mallard, Wade Sokol....there are video games, r/c street luges, and heeps more. Kids grow up playing with these and want to do it! this brings money into the sport. it gives exposure to the athletes, and BUILDS DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE!
I bet the next 5 years will move the sport much further into the public's eye. the boards, wheels, etc probally wont change Dramaticaly but i'm positive that street luge and speedboarding will be household names. i can go on and on but for everyones sake i wont.
but most importantly, you need to view commercialism from a racer's view. Commercialism allows a rider to have one of the best jobs in the world. YOU GET PAID TO RIDE A SKATEBOARD.(unless you prefer a desk job??) now that is solid.
There are a small handful of true pros. These are the guys (& girl) that support themselves and families from what they earn from riding a 2x4 with wheels. Anyone can become a "pro" not everyone will be a pro. but everyone should enjoy the ride! and in the future i'm positive the amount of professionals will be greatly increased!

Just a quick word about gettin' paid. I have been called out on my "anti-commercialism" stance, but, sorry guys , that wasn't me. Anthony has the right to his views, but i'm in line with Arab. I want to be able to travel to as many events as I can, and see all the racers I enjoy riding with, because they were able to afford it also. Our event last year in DC was very small ( 8 stand -up riders ) but we still had $500 1st place. I made a vow that the prize money would be paid before any of our mounting expenses, and Reed Lowery was stoked I made that choice, but my creditors a little less so. The riders DESERVE IT!! Never tell a poor man " money isn't everything ". Yeah, maybe it's an East Coast thing, or a city thing but we are TRYING TO GET PAID!! Call us hustlers and we beem with pride. Last year myself and Doug Dupin were paid $250 by a German news crew to have a presidential "race" in front of the White House during this years election. We wore three piece suits and Bush and Gore masks. It was totally ridiculous and worth every penny.( Ironically, they had us race three times with each of us taking a victory and the last race being a tie. The next day we really had a tie ) Always take the money !

BARRETT WAS EPIC!!!!! Friday night, while I was getting ready to leave, I get a call from Kludy man. We talk and I am now the newest edition to team TVS!!!! My first race being part of the team and I got the BRONZE!!!! I am so stoked. Mark Golter got 1st, and Gary Hardwick got 2nd. Team TVS swept the podium at Barrett! Awesome racing, new faces, and riders youd never expect to see out there. Rat Sult showed up! Him and all his shinyness! I want to give a shout out to all the stand-up riders out there because that is about the same group that shows up all the time, and we love that hill. Thanks to everyone and I can't wait to see everyone at Donner! Later

It's only commercial if you make it that way. Whether McDonalds has an ad with someone riding a longboard or shortboard doesn't affect me.
If more people buy boards and want to ride them it feeds the companies who can then afford to make more gear. At the slalom races this week, all the finalist but one had old, cannot get anymore decks. Most of the guys were running wheels that aren't made anymore. That's because slalom had lost popularity and the companies could not afford to continue building product for a non-existing market. I hope McDonnald's or Toyota or even Tampon's decides to run some slalom or longboard ads. It will let people know these sports/activities exist and will benefit us by helping to support the companies.

hey Nic - Amen brother I do not think i would like to see a comercial with a longboarder but of course ideally there wouldn't be any comercials in the world. being a surfer i have come to despise nissan for their stupid extera comercials.

Look at the crappy adds you have to watch at the moment, I,d far rather watch an add with some longboarding in it than another car, tampon or clothing add. Its when people with nothing to do with the sport like mcdonalds start cashing in on it for the image, but put nothing back that I have a problem. If big companies are gonna use the image they should at least sponsor riders or some events. I,d hate to see longboarding exploited like surfing has been. Every add break theres a surfing add, yet half the real surfers down here are stuck on the doleQ, somethings not right there. Companies like Red Bull are doing a lot for longboarding and should be supported and encouraged, when KFC etc jump on the band wagon, F@ck Em!

i was not talking about complete independance of anything resembling money in the longboarding sport. i was merely talking about taking it too far. some spectators at an event are completely different from seeing a comercial with a longboarder in it. i loathe the day that i turn on the t.v. and see that.

Anthony,
Talk to some of the racers... many of them will tell you why they need the sport to grow. Talk to Kludy, the guy is going nuts trying to raise dollars to hit as many races as he can. Dollars come when exposure increases.
As a comparison look at slalom racing. Exposure declined and it all but dissapeared. Exposure is on the increase (thanks in great part to the Morro Bay happening in the west and the Gathering that recently took place in the east) and it just may experience a re-birth.
I think you need to re-think your posisition. If there are no spectators, then it's just a bunch of guys hitting the hills. Which is great, but it won't make it possible for guys with financial obligations to be able to afford to travel and race. Spectators start out watching but may end up either participating by racing or sponsering a racer.
That's MY two-cents... HR

Who needs the sport to grow. who needs longboarding to become more comercialized. it may end up like shortboarding with video games that leave kids pretending to like what they have only done in a video game. why should the sport be popular. i am perfectly content knowing that what i do is unique from what another person does. that is the beauty of longboarding. there are so many different boards and styles to choose from and each one is good for something else. oh well just adding my on two cents.

Hey Kludy.... I'm gonna be there bro!!!! AHHHHHH!!!! You want a race, I'll give you one. I have found a hill that is gnarly, and is very close to Barrett as far as speeds, road surface, turns, cliffs and I have been training on it like a MADMAN. I am ready to rip. Wouldn't that be cool if the Dregs guys showed up? Call Dane and get him out there. Anyway, I'll see you on saturday. The taste of race is getting stronger in my mouth by the day! Later.

1. Yes, the Fat Boyz and Ed both rule. 2. DT's hybrid car rules. 3. The whole vibe at Revere rules. 4. Glen rules.
For those not paying close attention, Glen is quietly and unassumingly taking in alot of great and diverse skateboarding action with his video camera. Not only that, but he knows what to do with it. I think that sometime in the near future (defined as "in all of his spare time") we will all be treated to an awesome "highlight reel" of the collective works of Glen D. I like his choice of manic mellow music to skate to. Glen, I know you're busy but whatever I can do to help you out with your productions would be my pleasure. Keep capturing future nostalgia now. It will pay dividends in the end!

1. Ed Economy decks were ruling the banks. Being ripped by Chaput, Marlon, and Michael Bream. Fat Boyz rule. Thanks Ed, it will be treasured. 2. Chaput-effortless board walks while riding the banked slalom, Bream-sick floating sliders on an Ed Econ super tanker, Marlon-classic laid back surf style, Edwards-backside 180 slide with a walk to the nose while riding fakie, also a sick drop in from the fence. 3. wiggle wonking through tight slalom cones, Carrasco, Edwards, Chaput, Marc, Gorman, Jennings, etc.
Rad day, lots of great footage, Ed Economy Bank rider, sunburn, terminal "video lower back" pain.
thanks all

If we ride GG than it is a good idea to park in the lot that we used last time. It is on the park side of Stanyan just north of the Haight, just before the hill. It is No Parking during the week, but we can park there on the weekend. Otherwise we can meet inside the park. The "Roller Disco" on JFK is good. It is only a couple hundred yards into the park on JFK, you can't miss it. I will have my phone, so go to a payphone and call me if you can't find us. 510 303 7718
