First, we didn't actually do any slalom. Just some good low-intensity bombing, carving, and sliding. We having too much fun to worry about setting up a course. About 12 guys showed up and we took turns driving Paul Stieger's van down the hill to bring everybody back to the top. The hill was about as good as you are going to find in terms of traffic. The street deadends at the Orange County dump, which is closed on Sundays, so the only traffic was people who were either lost or thought the dump was open. We were there from about 10:00 until after 3:00, and in that time, we saw maybe 12 cars that weren't driven by skaters. The road surface was kind rough, but the road was wide enough to carve on 50+-inch boards. Toward the bottom, there was a place that sold compost and there were some small rocks in the street in that one section near its driveway--not a big problem for big soft wheels, but still a bit disconcerting at 25 or 30 and you hit a rock and your wheels kick it out in front of you so that you can hit it again. The hill was about a half mile long with about a quarter mile run out up a slight rise to slow yourself down. When the few cars did come, you could see them from a half a mile away so you had plenty of time to stop, or get to the right side of the road. If you full on bombed the hill you could get enough speed to clear the rise, but you wouldn't be going very fast when you did.
Only a handful of guys bombed the hill from the top. Their top speeds were around 40 mph. The hill might be a little faster than this, but we were riding into a head wind. DT did one run (on Dr. Go-Fast's race board) with the van chasing to get his speed, I think they said he was doing just over 40 mph. World speed record holder Gary Hardwick (I'm not sure whether he still holds the record or not) was there, bombing the hill on a longboard shaped like a Fender guitar. He said that this board was kind of twitchy and made the hill more interesting.
Most everybody else just carved the top two thirds or so of the hill and then bombed the rest, good for about 25 to 30 mph, which is about as fast as I've ever gone. For me the highlight of the day was that I came fairly close to straightening out a Colman slide. Anyway, it was a great time, and we're planning on doing something like this again next month, if not sooner. I'll let you know,
Chris

***DIRECTIONS FROM ORTEGA HIGHWAY***
1.Drive EAST (away from the mission)
2.Go to the 2nd light named La Pata Ave (its the 3rd light if you're coming from the north) its just after the residential area and the polo/soccer fields.
3.Turn RIGHT at La Pata (if you turn left you will be on Antonio Pkwy) *** the Ortega Hwy does NOT dead end ***
4.Proceed with CAUTION, it is one large hill with a slight hump in it.
5.We will be there at 10:00am
Also there is a great taco stand that is cheap named Pedros next to the mission on the opposite side of the freeway.

Here are complete directions to the slalom practice session this Sunday. From San Diego, take 5 North. From LA/North Orange County, take 5 South. Get off on the Ortega Highway and go east about 4 miles. If I remember the directions correctly, Ortega Highway ends. Turn right on La Potta Road. This is the road. We'll meet at the top at 10:00.

Just wanted to let people in Southern California know that we will be getting together for a bit of slalom practice and hill carving etc. this Sunday, October 17. The location is La Potta Road in Capistrano, off the Ortega Highway, east of I-5. We were going to meet at the top of the hill at 10:00. The road is a deadend that leads to the dump, which is closed on Sundays, so the only traffic we should run into is the odd lost motorist. I'll post better directions later.
See you there,
Chris

Hey, here's the postings for the West LA slalom race. This was the first, and very successful. We ran a hybrid Giant slalom so the longboarders could make it through the course, it was great fun! Next race will be November 21st, and (hopefully) will be 3 races: slalom, giant slalom & longboard g/s. Placings are as follows:1. Rich Carrasco 2. John Rogers 3. Dave Rogers 4. Beau Brown 5. Chris Sturhann 6. Bill Monk 7. James Levesque 8. Howard Smith 9. Jarret Ewanek 10. David Dujek 11. Rene Carrasco 12. David Thompson Thanks to Scott Peer for providing us with the location, Rene Carrasco for celebrating his birthday with us, Roger, Perry & Laurie for running the event &all the racers for believing in it and the family & friends that will be remembered as our first fans! Get in touch with me if you want to be on the mailing list for the next race.

The Flyin Hawaiian was clocked at 62.8 MPH going down a hill in Oakland, CA. His run was clocked with a radar gun and took place Sunday, 9-26-99. He was using Randals with Cherry Bombs. We have a variety of different hills here in the East Bay Area of Northern California. I would love to see what Mr. Freeman has to say about these roads. He has been traveling and skating roads in many different areas. Myself, I have traveled to many locations throughout the world and have not found anything that surpasses this area for great downhill skating.

Hello everyone!!!
The New York Longboarding Association’s Fall Race is happening THIS Saturday. We are looking forward to a record turnout for both Racers and Race fans!! This is the classic combination of pure endurance, speed and grace. This race is happening only two weeks after the fast and dangerous Prospect Park Race in Brooklyn only two weeks ago.
The club favorite seems to be Tito…..He is slated to knock off Rodney, the current Central Park champion. Other longshot upsets could include members from Teams Gravy and Burns. Corn, is up and coming star from Puerto Rico and one to keep your eye on for a possible top three finish.
The women’s teams teams Sash and Team FazsstFonfrias have been plagued by injury and are not sure if they even have a racer for the Fall Race. Anyway the event is gonna be a dousey so make your final preparations and see you on Saturday!!!!

Yep, you missed out. Buttboarding is it's own style. Even has it's own design of board. It is like luge, but the board and riding style is different. Someone should post a picture of one of them. I know some of you guys have a buttboard, cause I have seen you with them. Any pictures? Later late.

Sunday, September 19 we'll be skating and buttboarding on Sophomore Drive at West LA College in Culver City. We'll skate from about 11AM, for a few hours. Feel free to come and go at whatever time is convenient, the road is closed to traffic all day, and no permit is needed.
The hill is 0.3 miles long, and straight and wide with an easy grade, and one turn at the bottom. We can run the hill straight, or add turns with cones if everyone wants.
For directions, and more skateboard and inline event dates, have a look at the web page below. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments, or to be added to the mailing list.
