Do me a favor, guys... don't EVEN compare your paltry, low-three-figure bet with what I did to BoBo. Better yet, why don't you just leave me and my name out of your petty squabbles altogether? In the meanwhile, as a curious spectator, I know what I'd like to see. Bet a paycheck! Bet thousands. Hang something out over the line. $100 isn't even an evening of fun in Atlantic City or Vegas! I wanna see a race with some REAL stakes! Otherwise, in the larger scheme of things, your little race doesn't really mean anything to anybody but the two of you.

Bokonon - The banks are 6 feet tall and 21 feet long with a 60 degree angle. They are designed to be carved, big time. The road is smooth and nice. If you have any questions send me a note.

It's been 20 yrs since my last snake run- yet I am still considering going to Propect park (at 7AM!?)for this event. Can anyone tell me what to expect? What is a "center point bowl angle of 60'" mean? If the banks are 20ft long it would seem they would be designed to carve them. Why then 2ft of vert on a 6ft high bank? I'm picturing a curved bobsled run. What gear will I use- I mean besides all my pads and my health insurance card...

Thanks to everyone who organized this run- What an epic idea. It was great for me to see that you can get down in the city too. I'm up north about an hour away and there are many sweet newly paved hills to carve. Anyone interested in venturing up here(Putnam Valley) drop me a line-It's worth the trip. Again what a concept- Punk Rock, Viking Style- Geat run. See you next time.

ok - just got back from the 8mile nyc broadway bomb 2002 from 110 st to the bull at the end of broadway. ok - first things first: there ain't NO DOWN in "down broadway"! more uphill than down, but still awesome - fresh tar and downhill from houston street to canal! about 20 skaters with all sorts of rigs - lots of gravitys, my bozi, couple customs, sector 9s, 3 landy chiefs! Red Bull and Randall were in full effect and there were photographers all along the course. oh, did i mention this was outlaw and with traffic? all was well until we ran into the korean day parade at 41st street! some went thru, some went around.
they held traffic at the start - i can imagine the sight of 20 longboarders with whistles, helmets, cans of red bull just kicking as hard as possible thru a redlight and down broadway prob. caused people to notice...heh.
at the end of it - Aussi Richard on a custom board with a time of 34 minutes(!) touched the bull and won the randall trucks. beating the chase car, the chase motorcycle, people on the subway. 2nd was haggy with 35 minutes and 3rd was Ian, one of the organizers.
all in all, a great time and thanks to all the organizers, members of the NYC longboarders, red bull, randall and all those cops who kept screaming "get out of the parade!!" and to the German tourist who decided that looking thru the viewfinder of his video camera was MORE important than looking in the direction of traffic while crossing a street - sorry about almost taking you out and instead running up on the curb and do a flying bail into the gutter to avoid you.
cheers! steve (yes, jeff bozi - there is now blood on the hognose...i think it's mine)

Let me put this in perspective for ya wesley.
It was probably at Folly Bch where you got a hard on for me. Probably at the time I told you to stop acting like a dick. Ring a bell? I was replacing cones and you tan up on me and screamed in my ear "WATCHIT". And you kept running through and knocking cones down with out replacing them.
You WERE acting like a dick.
Now I don`t need to explain myself to you but where were you at The Finale of `01? LCO `01? How`s about King of Kona `02? Yeah, that`s where I fractured my rib at. Ever have that happen? Let`s see? That`s about 5 weeks prior FB. And tryong to make it through that lame course you set out on a 36" board, I fell again stuffing a cone and the rib was hurting all over...done racing. I know know, you could male the course clean on your ICK but not on a longboard asit was s`posed to be a "Worlds Longboard Slalom" race. Yeah, and less than half qualified AFTER the course was modified.
So Wesley, do us all a favor and keep your pompous ass home.
As for not participating in the rest of 2002? I was laid off november 11, 2001 and decided to get licensed and start my own buisness. My board expenditure for 2002 was for the ROE Bonita ONLY and had purchased 6 decks in 2001 along with assorted trucks and wheels.
Traveling expenses since sept 9 `01? probably about $4K (even after I had no income after LCO `01.
So puss out Wes and stay home...good riddance!

as 2002 wraps up, i'm already planning out my calendar to include attending races in breckenridge, morro bay, folly beach, south florida, georgia, boston, da'farm, gaithersburg, mississippi

Giving Credit Where It's Due

The more I stew on this, the more there is to say. It's 7:45 here on the East Coast and I'm watching the weather very closely. While I'm at it, there's another aspect to racing I want to recognize: uncredited HOSPITALITY.
How do we put a price on people like Bill and Alyssa Tway, Brian and Nannette Parsons or Tasos and Jill Tageniedes who provide way stations for weary travellers going up and down I-95? Then there's all the stuff that's off the books like Gilmour giving me a free set of Avalons for just getting to Boston. Or what about the breakfasts, lunches and dinners bought for fellow racers in diners and cafes (and Chinese restaraurants) all over creation? People like Peggy Turner, Howard and Heidi Gordon, Rick and Carin Howell, the Goulds and so many others who open their homes (and ice chests:-) to strangers just because they ride a slalom board? Or Deb Gordon, Chicken Deck, Buddy Carr, Rick Howell, Beau Brown, Chris Chaput, John Krisik, Jeff Bozi, the "Turner Consortium," the O'Sheis and countless others giving away product just to build this sport into something we can do forever? That doesn't even begin to cover what guys like Andy Bittner, BP, TK, JG, Tway, Tasos, 66, the guys at WLAC, Camp Holl , Stink Hill, Oak Street Beach or countless other racing and practice spots spent out of their own pocket to make racing a little more fun and organized.
All that has to go into the ledger on the PLUS SIDE of what made my summer of racing possible. Of course, when doing nothing, ride nowhere and pretending to be authoritative, NONE of this is obvious.
And none of this even begins to cover the actual thrill and fun of racing with your friends . . . or learning to start off a four-foot high gated ramp. How is that appraised?
So the support is certainly two-way. Unfortunately, though, are the brain-leaking fools who attempt to syphon that support to make themselves seem relevant. Their irrelevance is such a sad spectacle mixed in with such a wonderful obsession like skateboard slalom racing.

Dang, did it just get colder in here?
Can't control the weather, but there is a neat little half-pipe at the abandoned school-posted some pictures of me, Cliff Coleman, and Claude Regnier playing on it Sunday night over on the slalom forum. I'd be up for sessioning on it on Sunday if it rains-you're welcome to join me unless, of course, you're just some poser who doesn't ride vert, too. . .heh heh heh
. . .or we could just party and help Dave figure out what to do with all the cool stuff the vendors have provided. You missed ONE HELL OF A PARTY with the Red Bull contigent (they have a big crowd here of base jumpers and others) last night (so did I, but I could have been there, cause I'm here, I just had to get some sleep to make it across the bridge in the morning). Like we used to say, and it fits worrying about the weather: don't sweat the petty things, but always take time to pet the sweaty things. . .

P.S. I used Chris and Kenny as quick examples of guys who have spared no expense in being a part of this sport in the past year. That in no way discounts the money and time other people have dedicated to racing. Whether it be FCR, West Coast pros, international Open riders, East Coast regulars or whoever, you guys know who you are and how much you've put into this.
What I did want to illustrate, though, is there is a big difference between being a real racing freak and a sorry poser. It's time the freaks of the world unite and slam the door on some poor-mouthing loser.
Wait, that's not quite right. In order to "lose," you first have to race. What do you call someone who does nothing?

Let's see,
The Gathering: 1000 miles round trip Boston: 2240 miles round trip DC Outlaw race: 1000 miles round trip 'da Farm: 1800 miles round trip Georgia State Championship: 650 miles round trip (didn't race that day, but Rick certainly understood my motivation for not sticking around til the alternatives developed!) Morro Bay/Avila Beach: 6000 miles round trip
Total Mileage in 2002: @ 12,800 Total costs in 2002 (including registration fees) : @ $2,250.00 Total Expenses to date on new equipment: @$350.00 Total Outside support: $400.00 (A friend provided my Morro plane ticket.)
Total Out Of Pocket Expenses in the past six months: $2,200.00 (Not nearly as much what guys like Chaput and Mollica have put it into it, but certainly nothing to scoff at, especially when considering NONE has went to new decks.)
Of course, none of this reflects my time, effort and undocumented expenses in helping put on the Folly Beach race. It wasn't a whole lot, but an accountant would surely demand an itemized list for tax purposes. I guess I could reasonably add another $100 for that weekend and the weeks leading up to it. Tasos bought me a lot of lunches, but I went through quite a few tanks of gas going back and forth to the beach.)
Ok, Brady. Now, what have YOU done to support this sport in 2002? Oh, before you say anything, I really don't think posing for a weekend in Folly Beach really counts as much. The guy balancing a cooler full of beer on his board for 15 seconds Saturday night did more riding that weekend than you did in two days.
Normally, when someone who slaloms criticizes me for whatever reason, I let it slide. I don't "argue" on these forums. I say what I have to say and move on. When a f**king poser, though, starts dictaing to me what I have to do in his estimation to support this sport, I have to say something.
What's really good right now is the scrawny SOB lives 500 miles away in South Florida. Yes, Brady, it would be in your best interest to say nothing more.

What I do know about rain is that if I worried about it too much, I wouldn't be a world longboard champion in 3 disciplines and that flying from sunny Southern California costs more and you can't just turn around and drive home.
It's a risk. You take it or you don't. I'll see you guys Saturday night. Rain or shine.

Well, I'm not superstitious and I'm not going to pretend the weather will be sunny and bright on Sunday. Furthermore, I know that when it's cloudy, damp and sub-50 degrees the odds of the pavement drying well is next to nil. So even if it doesn't rain during the race, there's a good chance it might be too damp to run cones no matter what. (Would everyone agree we've learned our lesson about, "yeah, I think it'll be ok. Let's try it and see!" Ask ur13 or my rib cage about the validity of that logic!)
So here's the important question: does Dave have an INDOOR rain check facility where we can do SOMETHING on Sunday if things go sour? We all know about Folly and how we lucked out and Rick did pretty well improvising a race in Athens. Any chance we can get any advance word BEFORE Sunday about something in Fayetteville where we can race? Maybe under a football stadium grandstand, or a closed K-mart or Grocery store with a covered sidewalk out front? Rick found a auction shed to run his race. Anything like that around W. Va?
I hate to put Dave on the spot and ask for something up front, but 500 miles is a long way to drive without a back up. I love you guys, but another weekend watching Dave Riordan watch the pavement dry just isn't in it for me.
Let us know, Dave. I'd love to come but would like to know what I'm getting into. I got $50 burning a hole in my pocket. Will it be money well spent?
P.S. Anyone who laments that talking about rain will bring rain is an idiot. Who wants to dispute THAT notion and call it abuse?
