Slalom event advice
On 3/12/2007 Tim Cayer wrote in from United States  (66.65.nnn.nnn)

Hello slalom racers,

Tim Cayer here, back again looking for your input. I am discussing with the city the possibility of holding 2 slalom races here in Berlin NH this year. I have picked a couple of tentative dates and was hoping I could get some feedback. Keep in mind this will be my first attempt at holding slalom events, but for those who know me know I run GSI and have experience at running downhill events. (yes I am working on a couple downhill events this year in addition to MCGF also).

After looking at the events calendar here on NCDSA, I see that at least one date I was considering (May 20) is the day after the Needham open. Is this a issue? I know we are about 3+ hours from Boston. So any chance this will detract from that event. I don’t want to step on their toes. We are also about 3+ hours from Montreal. So I am hoping for all you Canadian racers you might be thinking of doing Needham, you could stop here on your way home. 2 in 1 weekend?

The second date is October 6. There doesn’t appear to be any events around that date yet. But I would hate to book it only to have something bigger come up later this summer and lose potential entries. I know, it’s always a possibility.

Equipment: I don’t have any. I did see some ramp plans on line which look like I can build easy enough. But the timing equipment I am not able to purchase at this time. Would anyone have some that they might be willing to let me use? Or is that not even something I should be asking.

I spoke to Joe last year after attending his race in Antrim (which just got me pumped about doing one) about getting his help. But I can’t seem to find his contact information.

Thanks for all your help. I hope I can contribute to the slalom scene with some good events this year.

Tim

Afternoon to Sunset

3326 Bero Rd.
Lansdowne, MD 21227

Some buddies and I are going to Lansdowne that day and would like to invite any and all interested to attend, skate, and chill. Lansdowne is one of 2 remaining 70's concrete parks on the East Coast and is acclaimed for its super-surfy feel. In addition to the concrete park, there are areas for cruising and street skating. It's completely free, but full pads (helmet, knee, elbow) are required. Also, if you're under 18 years old, you have to have an adult sign a waiver.

Hope to see you there!

Togo's Snowboard Art Tour
On 12/4/2006 Susan Truax wrote in from United States  (66.27.nnn.nnn)

Togo's tour van has embarked on its fall Snowboard Art Tour featuring the unique patterns and ethnically-inspired creations by California artist Zak Wilson. Togo’s launched its 2006 summer and fall tours as a way to liberate artwork from galleries and display exhibits for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy where they surf, skate, snowboard and ski.

This past summer, Togo’s wildly successful Surfboard Art Tour reached more than 500,000 people at beaches up and down the coast, and the Snowboard tour promises to be just as popular. The van, itself a visual feast, travels with Wilson’s custom designed snowboards and a sampling of Togo’s sandwiches. The tour will make stops at California’s beaches, skateparks and ski resorts including these upcoming visits on:

Dec. 8 @ Heavenly Resort, South Tahoe;
Dec. 9 @ Boost Mobile Block Party Rail Jam, South Tahoe;
Dec 10 @ Boreal Resort, South Tahoe;
Dec. 15 @ Lombardi Sports and Demo Center, San Francisco;
Dec. 16 @ The Hook Ski Shop, Santa Cruz; and
Dec. 17 @ the Plato Arroyo Skatepark, San Jose.

Snowboards, skateboards and Togo’s sandwiches – does it get any better?

The Jersey Jumpoff
On 9/22/2006 Adam Dabonka wrote in from United States  (67.84.nnn.nnn)

What: The Jersey Jumpoff: The Revenge of Summer!! Since the Broadway Bomb is just a few weeks away... what a better time than now to enjoy a casual, fun-filled skate through the hills of North Jersey. Seeing the New York skyline as a constant backdrop the whole way through!

Where: North Jersey; in particular: North Bergen, West New York, Union City, Weehawken, and Hoboken. We will be skating through those towns in order as shown.

When: This Saturday night September 23rd, 2006! 8:00 pm!!

Why: Because New Jersey Rocks!! Simple enough! Also, because this area has some really nice hills. We will be skating the famous "Empire Drop" hill which leaves you at the foot of the Hudson River looking directly at the Empire State building! As well, about 3 to 4 other really nice hills that you can bomb out or just carve em up for some great skating!! Most of the New York skaters have only heard about this area ... only a few have actually witnessed it. Now is your chance! Bring your slide-gloves, cones, bongs, beer, and whatever else makes you wanna skate the night away! The Jersey Jumpoff comes when it wants to... No one knows when the next time will be!! Also, this Saturday is the Atumnal Equinox... and we're gonna end this Summer off with a BANG!!!

How: We will meet at the North-East corner of the Port Authority building on 42nd Street, directly across the street from the Laugh Factory. Just look out for people with longboards. From there, we will take a $2 van ride in Jersey which takes about 15-20 minutes. Once in Jersey, we'll get off on 70th Street in North Bergen and take it from there! We'll hit the 1st hill right away, and from there skate through West New York, and Union City and see NYC from a different angle, and end up at our stop of the night; "Empire Drop". From there I do have an idea of what to do next... but from what I've learned the last time is that nothing is set in stone, so we'll just see what becomes of the night as we go. Plan on skating the whole night with some really awesome people!

For those in Jersey coming out to the area: Meet us at the 1st stop of the night "Empire Drop"; technically called Pershing Road: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...te=NJ&zipcode=
We should be arriving at this location sometime around 9:30pm. (let me know if the link doesnt' work)

On the way back to NYC, you can either get a $2 van back to 42nd Street. or take the Path train ($1.50) back into NYC at various stops along the way; Christopher St., WTC, 9th, 14th, 23rd, or 33rd St. or you can take the NY Waterway Ferry back to 23rd/West Side Highway ($5.50 one way).

The 1st Jersey Jumpoff was an "unpopular success" to say the least. I gave roughly a 3 week notice and only a few people showed up. This time, I'm giving a 2-day notice. Rationally speaking, I should expect to see a ####-load of people coming! But hey, it is what it is!

I hope to see all of my longboard friends there!! This is an open invite. So bring yourself and a friend or two!

Thanks,
Adam J. Dabonka
