Iwanted to get together for sliding sessions in Berkeley with anyone interested. However, my job has me on call and I am now traveling. I am currently in Los Angeles for yo-yo demonstrations. From here I go to Hawaii untill 3-18. Then I leave for France untill 3-28. I may go to England after that but as soon as I return I will post when I will be available to skate again in Berkeley.
For those of you who wanted to get together in Berkeley, I'm sorry that it will have to wait untill later.

I forgot to mention that the survey is set up to take into account if you probably couldn't make it. If your interested but probably couldn't make the trip, you might want to take the survey anyway. Your feedback could help give better numbers on what events there is interest in.
Beside, maybe you'll win lotto by June.

Pre-X-Games Contest

Okay, here's the deal. I've created a little HTML form for people to take a survey to see what kind of interest there is the Pre-X-Games Contest. It asks questions about events, dates, locations, etc., and it should be a good way to get quick informal feedback. The Survey is located at
http://home.earthlink.net/~sturhann/nosewheelie/contest/form.html
I've also created a mailing list on www.listbot.com, longsk8contest. All you have to do to subscribe to the mailing list is type in your email address and click the button. I figured out a way to get the results converted into HTML fairly easily, so I should be able to post results within a day or two.
I think that's about it. All that's left is for you to take the survey and subscribe to the mailing list, and we can start moving on this thing.
Later Days,
Chris

This is a followup to my post of about a week ago. So far I've heard from three people who are willing to help out in some capacity. Not bad for a start. I'm going to start a mailing list, so that it will be easier to bounce ideas around. If you want to be on the list, let me know. It seems that the the first order of business is to scout locations (this will help determine what permits/permission is needed) and set some dates.
In terms of locations, here's what I'm thinking. The contest would run two days, I presume at two different locations. On one day, it would be at a skatepark/school or whatever for bank riding, banked slalom, and flatland freestyle. On the other day, it would be at some hill for slalom and downhill freestyle.
In terms of events, it doesn't seem to make sense to have board size limitations on any of the slalom events. I think that whoever can get through the course fastest should win, regardless of the length of board. For bank riding, flatland, and downhill freestyle, it might be a good idea to have long and shortboard classes, because of the different styles involved. The problem might be that you may not have enough entries, to support both long and shortboard classes. After all, how many shortboarders are there who would enter a downhill freestyle contest. Then again shortboard bank riding is basically a street contest, and you might have way too many entries. For flatland it might be the hardest to combine long and shortboard. How would you judge a longboarder against a freestyler the likes of Rodney Mullen.
It's a tough call. I would say impose board length requirements on bank riding only, unless you're prepared to run a street contest at the same time. Then let the judges deal with the differences in style.
This brings up another problem. Where are you going to find judges, when most of the people who would be qualified would also want to compete?
Anyway, I'd like to hear what people think. Either email me or post messages here. If you want to be on the mailing list, email me.

This is something that might be able to get of the ground if we started working on it now. While I admire what the Extreme Sports media has done for skateboarding, there are a lot of aspects of the sport that are ignored by the Extreme Sports crowd. I've had this idea rattling around in my head for over a year now. I've often thought that it would be cool to hold a contest right before the X-Games in the areas not represented by X-Games. Events could include downhill freestyle, slalom (possibly regular and giant slalom), freestyle (possibly broken into long and short board classes), longboard bank riding, and banked slalom. The are a nuber of reasons I think it would be good to have it precede the X Games. First, the SF Bay Area already has a fairly large number of serious skaters, who would be interested in competing. Second, you already have more people descending on the Bay Area for the Games, which would give you an even bigger pool of skaters to pull from. Plus the media is going to be gearing up to cover the X Games, so this would give them something to cover, besides workers building ramps and such.
I see two major problems. First, organizing a contest takes time and a lot of work. I could help where I can, but I live in San Diego. I just don't think I can put together a contest from 500 miles away. What we need is a handful of people to scout locations, get the neceessary permits, etc. Second, the timing doesn't work out nearly as well as I'd hoped. The X Games are scheduled for Friday, June 25-Saturday, July 3. The obvious choice would be the weekend before the X Games, June 19 and 20th (Father's Day). This means people coming out for the X Games would have to extend their trip by almost a week. One option would be to hold it during the week June 23 and 24th, but that might be tough for people to get the time off, and it might be tougher to get permits to close a public street during the week. Another option is to hold it at the same time as the X Games, but I think it would get lost in the din. The last option would be some time Fourth of July weekend.
By summer, it looks like there will be a longboarding magazine. Putting together a contest would give the the magazine something to promote in the first issue and cover in the second issue. Let me know what you think, either e-mail me or post a message here.

Thats a good question Cliff. I do know the X-Games will be in San Francisco this next summer. But qualifying for them can only be done at an EDI event, according to what I have been told in the past. As I understand it, Biker Sherlock is now the owner of the EDI. As Cliff pointed out the EDI site has not been updated in a long time and I see that Dregs, (Bikers skateboard company) has been taken down as well for re-construction. My questions are: 1. Why has the EDI site not been updated in over a year? 2. How can some one that lives outside of California qualify for the downhill event in the X-Games? 3. Where can we get accurate, up to date information on Downhill Skateboard (Speedboarding) Racing competition? Thanks, Tannis

I know that "EDI" usually is the promoter for the downhill skateboard events that lead to the yearly X-Games. However their web site hasn't been updated for a long, long time! If anyone has information on when, where and how to qualify for this years events then please post it for everyone.

Hey Kiddies, I heard that there was a "critical mass" style ride last sunday (10-18). Anyone know about it? I heard there were lots of longboarders and the "winner" of the ride got a longboard. Why did not anybody say anything? It sounded way cool, expecially since it is totally illegal.(the ride was in the downtown "no skate" area) I am down for the next one, lets get a post so we all can go. Keep it real.

I'm organizing a skate session for sunday, and possibly saturday of next weekend. That would be the 19th and 20th of september, 1998. The sessioin will take place in the Oakland hills and Piedmont hills, and possibly Berkeley hills. Very excellent skating areas. I know of about 9 runs ranging from easy to very difficult, and a bunch of roads we can cruise around and try out. There's so many hills the possibilities are just endless. Skating the Oakland hills is an experience you can't miss! So grab your board and email me now and lemme know you're going to make it!

I'm sorry this is so last minute, but things came to together rather late. We're going to Temecula Skatepark tomorrow, Tuesday, September 1, 1998 for the evening session from 7:00-9:30 pm. So far it looks like it's just going to be me and Mike Mayo, and maybe one of Mike's friends. The session is $5 or $6 if you have to buy a membership. You need full pads, but they rent them for a buck a pad, I think. If you need directions, these aren't the best, but they get you there.
From Los Angeles take highway 15 south, or from San Diego take highway 15 north, to the Temecula-Indio exit just north of the US Immigration checkpoint. Go east. Turn LEFT at second stop sign (there is an AM/PM mini market there). After approximately one mile there will be a park on the left and a high school on the right. The skatepark is located in the park.
Also, we're trying to get together Saturday, September 5 for some downhill carving, so far it's just me and a guy who called last week. He's visiting from Detroit. If you're interesed or have suggestions for spots get in touch.
