Suspenders vs Sky Hooks

I had a set of Suspenders. Here is the problem I had with the Suspenders. It's been a long time but If I can remember correctly you couldn't push with them because the velcro wrapped around your shoe so if you pushed with your foot it would ruin the velcro. Also when you tried to bail, the velcro wouldn't release very well. My friend had Sky Hooks and these worked much better. You could take your foot out to push and you could bail off anytime.

In light of the skyhooks, I came out with Air Shooms when I ran my skateboard distributorship back in Michigan. I liked them more because a 360 degree lip allowed multiple angles to hook your feet and ... they could be used for handstand posts. YIKES. i remember going downhill on my hands in those crazed daze :)
While I pack up to move, I'll keep an eye out for more historical stuff. looking forward to beachin it again.
skogging tours thru the mission beach area sounds like a nice retirement job.

Craig,
I can't help you with the Ray Allen show, but if you want to see some good footage from this era check out the Duane Peters documentary "Who Cares". Lots of footage from the Gold cup series & Hester Series in the bonus features.
good luck

Doug & Eric -
SKYHOOKS HAWAII( the trademark name ) were manufactured in Hawaii under businessman Abe Lee. They came in Red and Blue colors of plasic/hybrid composition.
My brothers - Richy 'The Brown Bomber', David 'Cowboy' Carrasco and myself, helped 'pioneer' SKYHOOKS in the Sport of Skateboarding...ALONG WITH ... surfing great - Dale Dobson, ripper Lonnie Hiramoto, those fella's in Hawaii, -dang it,...I can't remember their names ... also, I think Howard Hood -another ripper over at the Runway Skatepark, also Benny Rodriguez, and Mike Schwartz.
Besides doing thousands of Skateboard Demo's promoting SKYHOOKS, ...My brothers and I were PAID Skyhook Team Riders.... from 1977 to 1981.

................... -GREAT TIMES ! ......................
Now, regarding 'SUSPENDERS' - - -( The Velcro Bindings )
You should ask Dave Hackett about those - I'm sure he has TONS of info & photo's about 'Suspenders'.
He, along with his brother Paul, and other rippers ( I can't remember all the guys...) promoted those attachments for Skateboarding.
When I wrote my PEPSI PRO TEAM article for the Skatebord History Book - THE CONCRETE WAVE -THE HISTORY OF SKATEBOARDING..... -I even mentioned Dave and his brother using Suspenders at the Pepsi Team demonstrations.
Oh yes, how could I forget - Wink Roberts was also a Pepsi Team member who 'ripped' using Suspenders... and also Glenn Redmann.
I just talked to Wink Roberts the other day... he's writing and selling Movie screenplays !
Way to go Wink !
Take care,
.....-Rene CANNONBALL Carrasco.

Anyone remeber those suspender things? It was like a tie down that would attach to your board, slide your feet under the strap and do "amazing no-handed airs". I want to say that Paul Hackett was featured on them in an old skateboard world? Also some company built a round metal tee that you'd place on the top of the board for handstands? I tried the slide an inntertube under the board deal which caused many hippers to bloom. Anyone have any more wacky gimmicks along these lines?

Craig , I remember reading about the Ray Allen show but since I lived in West Virginia, we were behind the times and I never saw the show. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think he filmed some footage of Marina Del Rey Skatpark and there was some footage of Dave Andrecht skateboarding but I don't know what park , maybe Oasis?

In the August 1980 issue of Action Now there is an ad for "The Ray Allen Show", headlined "Skateboarding on TV". Can anyone elaborate on what material this show contained? This was a syndicated cable show and this would pre-date skate videos, not in form, but in terms of viewing skateboarding outside of the feature film format. Any contact info for Ray Allen himself would be welcome. Nothing like the source.
thanks, Craig

I still have my elephant wrench from Winchester skatepark days. They're next to impossible to break, have every tool one would need (at least back in the 70's) just a great tool to have. A few times it went missing, but like a long lost friend it'd show up again. Once I spent two hours searching for it only to find it wedged into my elbow pad after a session. THEE BEST SKATE WRENCH EVER!!!!!!!!

oh hi marty, i think that was at marina del rey. not really sure but it was somewhere up north(from san diego). carlsbad wasn't that nice looking! and that rag was a temporary fleeting rag that somehow believed I had at least one shot fit for a mag.
FYI. still one-footin' it down in PB/MB boardwalks. come on down and see the antics. itz wayyyyy different than the typical boring longboard skateboarder. the fact is simply this. I'M HAVING FUN TODAY doing something counter the popular culture and I love it!!!

Rene, I've got a gnarly scar on my right butt-cheek from forgetting I had one of those skatewrenches in my jeans pocket. My wheels hooked-up midway thru a Coleman at 20+ mph, back in '80 or '81. Still have the wrench, despite the mark it left on me. Thanks for the picture, btw.

Hello PSR -
You mentioned the Elephant Brand skatewrench.
Man, I actually still have mine - they were given to me back in the 1970's by the man who made them - Mr. Hess .... -he had a skateshop called SKATEBOARD LOVER, about a mile from my house...in Garden Grove, Ca.
Dang, those things are TOUGH !
I gladly represented Elephant Brand skatewrenches in OVER 2,000 Pepsi, Hobie, Santana, & Skyhook Team demo's - using those wrenches.
Recently -when I used to practice with SSS - I always had my skatewrench on the bumper of my Astro van - for anyone to 'wrench' their boards if they needed to - -as they walked back up the slalom course. Good times.
I took this pic of one of my original wrenches - for my Sk8kings Forum -back in Nov. '06.
Blurry Photo: By 'Cannonball'.
Mr. Hess ~ ~ ~ You & your wife were THE BEST ! -THANK YOU !
Take care,

Nic, one other thing about those ACS models that MSK listed; they're all from the 70's, and featured hangers that are Not sand-cast, but rather pressure-cast aluminum. That means they're much stronger than they look, but also not a very grindable hanger (not that you should Grind with the kingpin sticking up like that!), as the metal is pretty thin around the axle. They're super quick turning (well, the 650 was a bit more stable), and the baseplates fit older Bennett hangers nicely. Now, with Bennett's return, you can get bushings again for these (I've been using various Rollerskate bushings). Speaking of kingpins, baseplates; That lower jam nut on the bottom of the kingpin should always be snug against the baseplate once you've adjusted the bushing's tension. The old-style 'Elephant Key' skatewrenches have that size wrench fitted on them (I used to keep a 6" adjustable with me, just for that lower jam nut).
Other trucks made were the 800, 850, 900, 950, all in the late-70's/early 80's (for wide 'Pig' decks), and the ultra-rare C-14. ACS made killer stuff, and I wish they were still making trucks, nevermind bike parts.

ACS (American Cycle Systems) is a bicycle component manufacturer that also made trucks in the 70s/early 80s. They're still in business, but only as a BMX component company. I talked to the owners a few years back, and they said they have no intentions of getting back into the skate business...
From www.acsbmx.com:
"Before there was "dirt", "race", "flatland", or "street" there was ACS. Over 30 years ago aerospace engineers Charles Stephens and Robert Hanson founded ACS and developed, designed, and manufactured some of the first high-end BMX components. ACS alloy hubs ruled BMX in the 70's, and ACS mags were featured on popular selling bikes. When freestyle started in the 80's, ACS pioneered specialty components the pros needed like the ACS Rotor, RL Hub, 100psi tires, and BOA Brakes. ACS also designed and manufactured 5 models of skateboard trucks at that time (430, 500, 580, 600*, and 650), as well as shoe skates with VANS shoes."
*Note: the "600" was probably supposed to be "651", and they produced a few more models besides the 5 listed...
