EDI-E
On 3/16/2000 MANU wrote in from (212.11.nnn.nnn)

Hey chris,
this is Manu, i totaly agree with your comments, EDI races
are sometimes extreme, but at edi, we also want to make an amateur class, to demecratize the sport, but organizing is something really serious, safety and insurances are the most important things and everybody must understand it.
I admit organizing wild events is easy, but it's not the right way to make sport grow. If european joined edi it is
especially because we believed it was the best way to do the things, and not only because we wanted to suck the ass of Biker sherlock. In europe, we exist, we have lots of very good events for two years, a good organization and don't need anyone from other countries to exist and make the things happen, but the competition must go in the same way all around the world and the main goal of all the organizers must be the safety and the SPORT !
So if one of you guys wants to join us to make the sport grow, you're welcome, but it's a serious job.
This year edi and us organize a lot of events and the official world championship (downhill) but we're already
preparing the 2001 championship which will probably include slalom....we'll tell you more soon !
Don't forget we're working for you ....
Bro' Manu

So Cal organizations
On 3/15/2000 Chris wrote in from (167.208.nnn.nnn)

Yo Omar,

There are organizations in Southern California. It's just a matter of how receptive they are to amatuers or how active they are.

Extreme Downhill International (EDI), although international, is based in San Diego. EDI is probably not the best venue for your average weekend warrior skater. If I'm not mistaken, annual membership is $100, and entry fees for a single event are about the same. This makes their events inappropriate for anything but very serious amatuers. This is not to say anything bad about EDI. It costs a lot of money to put on an EDI event. Permits, insurance, timing gear, hay bales for the road, etc. all cost money. Plus, there's something to be said for discouraging just average skaters. Downhill skating is dangerous. Even top pros can be seriously injured or even killed in such races. You don't want to let just anyone with a Sector 9 on the course.

Personally, I'm planning on entering as an amatuer in the EDI event in April in East San Diego County. This is not something I take lightly. I just got a full set of leathers and a decent full-face helmet (still trying to find one with better visability in a tuck). I'm not even going to attempt to be competitive. The only person I'm going to be competing against is myself, or possibly the hill.

The other group is the Gravity Racing Association (GRA). GRA is much more accessible to average skaters. The entry fees on their events are only $20 per event. The only problem is that they haven't had a real sanctioned race since November, but they have had practice sessions. There's another practice session this weekend at West LA College. See my post in the Events section from a couple of days ago.

I'm sure that GRA would be up for more events this year, or another organization could be formed if not. If you have any ideas/locations for events, let me know. E-mail me or post a message here. Also let me know if you're up for this weekend. Later,

Chris

P.S. There is also an e-mail list for Southern California longboard skaters. For more info, check out
