i made my own longboard, and i can't stop on it. I came down this hill the other day, and i was going so fast i started to wobble. Also, there was a large main road at the bottom of this hill. My only option was to steer into the grass at the side of the road. I hit the grass, lost my shoes, skidded along on my head and shoulder for over 5 metres and stopped with a dogshit next to my nose. Anyone know how to stop? Mail me please

Scheckey, you seem to have learned from your mistakes, so no critical comments from the Spankster! Stick with the longboard for sliding, bud, and vert can be smooth, stylin' and loads of fun on a longboard too, I've been doing it alot lately and it's sweet! Check out the Dregs website for some sick shots of longboard vert pioneer, Brad Strandlund doing it long and vert years ago! Stay loose, Scheck, Spanky out!:)

Wayne, hey dude, cool idea about rescuing the pup, bad idea doing it so suddenly! A slower introduction may have been cooler. Teach that pup to sit on the nose of yer longboard while you are cruising (at low speed, no sense in creaming the little canine!) that would be very cool! Take it slow and you'll have a new cruising partner! Spanky out!

Dude, falling down sux. I havent learned to slide very well on my longboard yet. They re-paved my street recently, and I was stoked! Getting faster and faster runs I wanted to start to do big long slides. I grabed my short vert board (its been about a mounth or so) and loosened up my trucks real good and went for it. Soon I was going far to fast and was going to hit speed wobble. Tryed to drop my trailing foot to cut some speed and WHAM! On the ground. Right knee torn open and bleeding, right elbow same and a hipper thats going to be black as night and blue as the sea by tomorrow.
1. short boards are for vert. 2. wear your pads. I didnt and look what happend.
3. Im learning to slide tomorrow.
Ok Spankey, let me have it! =)

Hey gus what's up...seems like the spankster provides running commentary on the crashes so how's about this one, well it's not really a bad crash but it is pretty cool, bombing the hills in my hood, and who should I see but one of our new puppies walkin' along lookin' kinda lost, being adog lover and just crusin' i decide to be a bad ass and scoop the pup up as I go by and cruise home & drop 'im off. Good idea, but the pup spazed out, lost bladder control and bit the shit out of me, needless to say it was my own damn fault so I just took him home bandaged up & cleaned off and went back out, later that day I left the board outside and the pup was standing on it when I came back out...I guess he wanted to go for another ride!

Me and my friends were at this park in Sandy,UT and we were bombing this incredibly steep sidewalk. Ishould have known my luck. My buddies start filming me ( People get all freakin crazy when theres a video camera on them ) anyway, I start bombing this sidewalk and I get these nasty speed wobles and Itried to get over to the grass but before I could say "Oh SH*T" I had rolled 3 or 4 times (while going about 20-25mph). I thought I just sprained my wrist and banged my head up, but 2 weeks later I went to the Doc. and I had to have surgery on my hand. They put 3 pins in it! Although the good thing is we got it on film. moral of the story is, CHICKS DIG SCARS!

within an hour after the purchase of my 48" pintail sector9, we are parked at the top of the UCSC campus, ready to try out those long hills. not having fallen much in the past on the 30" board, i feel a little over confident. Everything is smooth. too smooth. lovin'it though. ever tried to drive a friend's jaguar when you are used to your beat up car (personally a 1967 2cv)... well, before you're aware of it, you're past 120 mph? Same deal. In the absence of the wobble signals, I did not realize what speed I was very quickly reaching. by the time the words "Hmm, don't think I've ever gone that fast before" hit my mind, my body was already reacting. tried to drag my foot down in an effort to slow down, even just slightly.. I was the first surprised to feel my entire upper body thrown forward, head first, and my legs running as fast as possible in order to catch up to it! ate it big time...hips, hands, elbows, knees, and especially shoulders.. nothing heeled for weeks. That night i kept dreaming of crashing so the next day, Keith and I went back skating late at night, to get over it. of course, i was so nervous i fell again, on the same open palms and knees. but nothing bad, which helped me get over it. Good thing because that longboard is such a pleasure to ride, + it was my present: that Santa Cruz day was my birthday.

Bull, there is nothing I can really add to what you wrote...you did a terrific job of showing what a stellar individual you must be! Knowing that there will be a certain amount of "attrition" in what we do, I will sleep better tonight knowing that you will probably be a statistic before I, and serious longboarders everywhere will be. I use the monicker "Meathead" with guys like you in mind. Have a great day Bull, keep it balls out buddy, Spanky out!

Rod,

I think you misunderstood me. When I said that this was a really lame crashing story, I was talking about mine in comparison to most of the other ones listed here (yours included). After all most of the people here were doing serious downhilling. I hurt myself doing 2 mph in front of my house. No, I don't need to see pictures of you bruises. I trust they're spectacular. Cool?
Cool.

hris, I nearly WAS lame after the crash. OK, so my tale may
not have been well told, but my boss was due bak in the
office so I had to rush. Can you view \ save jpg's if I
attach them to an e:mail. If so I'll snd you a scan of the
bruise and get myself out of the lame books. As for your
comment about letting momentum take over, negating the
need to push......well I respect your longboard surfing
sensibilities but have you seen the footage of 'Wingnut'
riding Tavarua, or 'Weird Reef'. A longboard isn't purely
about carving, surely. If that was the case, then why would
so many longsk8ers ride pools or grind kerbs? I regularly
ride a midi ramp on my 48", but also carve mile long hills.
Pushing isn't a crime. Let me know if you want
to see the pic.

Chris, Rod...you guys are all right! The Spankster doesn't feel so bad now that you dudes have related these tales of woe!
It's just a fact of life that us skaters are going to get a little road rash, hematomas, groin pulls, creamed knees and so forth. I guess we are all bound to be meatheads from time to time, Spanky included. If we lived lives with no challenges, safe and sound in our houses, we would never get hurt, but thats not an existance any of us would enjoy. I'd rather experience the rush's and fun of skating and the other activitys I do. I am willing to except the occasional crash as part of the program, it's an easy trade off.
My knee enjury of a couple of weeks ago has flared up again, I went to the doctor and he just suggested that I take it easy for a few days, nothing too serious.
One of these days I might relate my ultimate crash tale, the time I crashed my Drag Racing motorcycle at 120 MPH, and managed to walk away with no permanent injuries! Now that was a rush!
Chris,Rod, it could have been worse, you you could have"road rashed" your groin. Foreskin graphs can't be a pretty picture! Spanky Out!

I'll admit that this is a very lame crashing story. Someday, I'll relate a real crashing story but because this one is so lame, I wanted to share it now. Let me start by saying that one of the great things about longboards and big wheels is momemtum. You give a few pushes and they go and keep on going, but this can be a problem as well. That said, here's my story.

Lately, I've spent a lot of time in the evenings working on tricks on the street outside of my house. One of theses tricks is just a plain old wheelie. It looks so cool on a longboard, because it sort of looks like you're riding a tail stall in longboard surfing. Anyway, last night I was working on wheelies, when my back foot slipped off the tail. Now this wouldn't have been a problem except for the fact that my front foot was still on the board and the aforementioned momentum. Now, I'm about as limber as a desert tortoise, and having one foot on the ground and the other on a still-moving skateboard brought my body much closer to doing the splits than it ever should. I managed to push up with my back leg, but unfortunately, my front leg was still on the board, which was still moving. So it pulled back into that same groin-pulling position I was in previously. Finally after dragging me about 6 feet I came to a stop.

Fortunately, I think it was only a minor groin pull, which is good, because I'm rather fond of my groin. Chris out.

A moody tale from Brighton (England)

Just before Christmas (and two weeks before a sn0_board trip) Brighton
was blessed with a dry day. Since I wasn't planning to take my OneWay Chiller (48") home to Manchester for Christmas, I decided to go for the fatal 'one more go', whilst I could. First thing, I think we all know NEVER to say stuff like: 'One more' or 'last one', because that makes fate prick up her ears. Anyway, I decided to take the run down from Clifton Hill down to the seafront, which is all down-hill and throughout, you can keep your feet on the board. But not me! Feeling hyped because of Christmas and two weeks from a trip to the French Alps, I really wanted to fly. So off I went..... Things were going well at first and I completed the 'man-hole cover slalom' in record time. Now, to stop my legs aching on a long run I learned to push for a while with my left foot, and then swap to my right (I'm goofy, by the way). Thing is, I'm more stable with my right foot on the board, pumping with my left. On my way down to the seafront, I should've been contented just to cruise, but with
snowboarding aggression in my blood, I started pushing.....with the wrong foot for the speed i was doing. I took my right foot off and pushed once, but that was enough. My left foot wasn't in the right position; it was way off centre, and so without the stabiliry of two feet, the left rail dipped as far as it could towards the blurred tarmac of the road. The trucks (which I love to run loose) went as far as they could and my OneWay street slicks came up through the cut-outs. I was doing about 20mph, and in a nonosecond, my board was on'full lock'. I don't know if any of you watch motorbike racing, but if you remember Suzuli's Kevin Schwantz's highsides, then that's what happened to me. I came down SOOOOOOO hard on my hip that I ended up in hospital (sk8-ted there though!). They watched as a heamatoma came up and stretched from hip to knee, rendering me incapable of walking for a week. The moral? F*@k it! Long boards rule however you ride them.

First smack of the season:
I just couldn't wait to smurf on down through the parking
structure ... couldn't let a little rain hold me back.
Rode 4 floors, 'scool ... stepping off board at the
stairs ... I hit the ground so fast and so flat I'm not
sure if my head hit or not. Full bod-ache.

Yo Spankster!
Velkomen to the club! Man, sounds like you need to take some lessons from the "Gravity Girls". Check out the new Gravity Slides video and see how it is done! No seriously bro, the same thing happened the same day to my roomate. We were skating Greer Park on Sunday and he took a minor spill. No biggie, but his knee was swolen. Yesterday he told me he went to the doctors, and he needs surgery! Not cool, so get it checked ya old man. (he is bumming, because now he can't skate). later, late. eggman.

Well kids, it happened, the Spankster had a wipeout! Yesterday I was fooling around in the driveway, doing a little freestyle on one of my longboards. I was doing traditional surf style moves like cross stepping, walking to the nose and turning to walk back, when all of the sudden my feet got all tangled up and down I go! My right foot stayed on the board and I sorta did the splits, I came down hard on the inside of my right knee. It didn't hurt too bad so I shook it off and kept skating. Later last night when I got ready to shower, I dropped my drawers and my knee is the size of a grapefruit and all purple and shit! Don't think it's too bad, sure ain't goin' to the bonecrusher, he'll just want to amputate or something. The lesson in all this is that even doing low speed, fartin' around in the driveway shit you can get wounded, so wear that protective equipement. While we are on the subject, when you young Spankomaniacs is at the party trying to pick up that special someone, heck, remember to protect yourself then too! You can never be too careful. Remember, protect all your apendages and you'll live a long and fruitful existance! This is the Spankster saying, "Cruise cool, protect your tool."
