i wonder if its at all possible to put handle-bars on a skate board to lever with like a scooter but still use leaning to turn so my feet dont have to ballance and i can control the lean by my hand via the handle attatched to the skate board and up to my hips ..

Im 50 and built my own boards back in 73 ( santa monica ) when I was younger , I used solid oak , shaped um like surf boards . Used news paper folded in half to make design . keep it old school .....Matt

Don't know what you mean with that post but ok.Either way, I went ahead and made that board. I used brazillian cherry hard rock maple and puprle heart and edge glued them up. Came out sweet and love the deck, did a pintail shape put randal 2 180s black and orangetang wheels on her. Rides so smooth and carves amazingly. I plan to move the wheel base up about 1/2" and do drop throughs in the winter in case I mess it up.

Hello everyone. I'm sorta new here, used to be into longboarding quite a bit more when I was in highschool, about 8 years ago. I frequented this site a lot then but have lost touch over the years. Now I'm getting back into it and my old gravity isn't as fresh and new as it was back then. So I'm thinking of building my own from solid wood and need your thoughts. What I'm looking to do is use maple and brazillian cherry and laminate them side by side to make a sort of butcher block effect. How will this hold up as far as flex and not cracking? I know it will look sweet but I want some durability too. My gravity has great flex for my weight, 260, but I want a little less. A construction note would be I plan to biscuit joint the peices together and use gorilla glue to glue them. I plan on using 3/4 finish lumber and then plane smooth after glue up hopefully resulting in no smaller then 5/8". Will I need to glass over all of that?

Amazing skills ya got there herbn. I sanded down a few vintage decksand refurbished em LOL   But never made skateboard trucksto actually ride the concrete on!! Love to see the finished product andfilm of you sidewalk surfing on em!cheersDavid

I just moved back to TO from my 16 month internship in Vancouver BC to finish my last semester of Mech Eng in U of T. Witnessing the endlessly flat terrain of Ontario from the airplane I knew I had to avoid the irony of slipping into a depression. Luckily I managed to convince my professor to let me do a thesis on a radical lond distance pumping longboard-mountaingboard hybrid. Even in the midst of the bitter Toronto winter my life revolves around longboarding. For my research I have come up with a short survey to capture the voice of the market. I think this community is the heart of this market. I have read some terrific post here in the short time that I have known about this website. after 2 false starts, i finnished a 40 degree pivot side to my front baseplate. I'm not exactly sure what happened but twice ,i started with a nice square clean piece of 1x1 stock, clamped it, found the true edge, and went in with the indicated dials on my vintage (ww2 era) mini milling machine.Somewhere between center drilling and then boring out to the .628 hole ,i need for the mini bearings i use as pivots, the hole shifted off center. Very annoyed i started the third and just rechecked center at each step along the way, i guess thats just the way i have to go.

just measured the back baseplate, 30 deg nearly dead on ,maybe the needle was on the low side of the 30 line, so it was 29 deg and 50 mins, whew! i borrowed the angle finder for starting the front today at 40 ish, maybe 40 even i was gonna go for a few extra degrees because i thought i'd gone shallower than i originally planned,30 and 40 degrees was my original concept,so that's what i'm gonna do.  attack

Well ,machining away,the winter days, not really whole days just nice sized chunks of time. The back baseplate is done,i'll have to refigure out how to post pics. The truck is really a bit more radical than i was trying for ,it's very shallow,20 degrees probabely. I still havn't measured it. That's cool though ,some of the slalom guys are going with 0 degree's in the back.I made an entirely aluminum king pin that steps down to an m8 nut in 5 little steps ,for stress relief. Kingpins on my trucks are very much unstressed , they do very little except hold the bushings in place,and i run very loose so there isn't even that much tension. I made it long enough for two reflex barrel bushings i may go with a long conical as an outer bushing. attack

wow ! a month just crawls by in the wink of an eye. I decided to wait on gluing board parts until warmer weather. I've started on the trucks;the baseplates will be sort of integrated into the board,topside, which it a new thing to me. A sheet of .125 7075t6, i'm gonna try to treat it for bonding and epoxy it,but there will also be some fancy t-nuts for security. The pivot side of the baseplate and the kingpinside will be seperate pieces that interlock and clamp into the plate and can slide front to back a little. There can be a little bit of height adjustment inside the truck geometry with spacers or shims,that's different than risers out side of the truck. The back truck has a fairly shallow angle,i havn't measured it,i just sort of make it by eye,it's around 30 degrees. The front is gonna be a bit steeper ,40 degrees.This board is gonna be built for speed. Oh yeah the pivot turns on the micro bearings they tried a few years on little boards,and a tight delrin bushing/slash spacer between them,probabely a thrust washer too.

well it's been a while,but a crappy bit of snow/cold weather got me in a bit of a crafting like mode.Little aside goes to buying tools for your projects, i've been missing having two hand drills set up at the same time,one for drilling pilot holes the other for driving screws,my little drill burnt out a while ago. It's so convenient ,no it's beyond convenient ,it's necessary to have this set up. Today i basicly made a "beam making mold" on a nice straight 48" long piece of birch ply i have a thin layer of nonstick plastic and a couple of uhmw poly (also non stick) strips of plastic that are totally parallel and spaced just right for a row 1.25 wide strips of vertical grain balsa wrapped in carbon cloth. A proper pilot hole makes it just so smooth to accurately screw down the strip of plastic with the screw going through a thin sheet of plastic and into the birch ply base. If i had to do this with one drill it would be just so frustrating to keep swapping the drill and the screw driver bit, a hand screw driver would work but a light pilot drilling hand drill was pretty cheap at just over 30 bucks,so now it's done and i have the time to waste in front of the computer. I may do a test batch of my left over epoxy this week ,if there's any doubt i'll have to buy new glue,it does get old. Then i start making the beams for my first new dh board in years.

it's high time to start a new project,i'm a bit inspired by today ,i got together with a friend and a couple of his friends. One guy filming, and the other guy is a bit out of control older newbie, i hope he picks up some skills and smooths out before the seemingly inevitable crash and burn happens. Anyway, i hit probabely the most runs in a day ever for me including a trip up to our mecca, harrimann, to try and break 50.In my leather mc pants and ff helmet, a bit of a headwind made it ellude me once more,once again 49 ish is the best that would happen. I came up with the plans for my new board yesterday, Sort of based on a couple of carbon wrapped balsa torsion beams on either sides of the baseplates, with a milled and drilled out sheet of aluminum top mounted with two part baseplates kind of integrated(interlocking and bolted) into the metal on the deck. Very little hardwood ,some side rails and some bumpers front and back but no birch skins ,just balsa pieces fit between the beams and the side rails and then a layer of carbon top and bottom. Iwant the deck to be very light and low .Playing with ideas like traction pins in addition to griptape,and maybe carbon foothooks/fairings. My current speed missle board needs a bit of work on the truck i noticed a bit of play and it turns out the secondary pivot has come a bit loose, it can't come out ,but the truck needs to come apart a bit to tighten and secure things(locktite). I had my new friends park halfway down ,in the peak speed area of harrimann, and buzzed them, when they drove up to me at the bottom it was like an intervention at first, aparently the sound and "feel" of a skateboard going by at 50(nearly) is quite a bit different than when you watch it from a car:)

Pogo yeah, thats where I got the ideas.And no, they sold out so no dice for having this dropped off at your spot from DE of all places .(Are they in a recession?)So thats cool, but it ain't like they so hard to make.And yeah, you can tell mines not as good.Smile, its a brand skatin new day. I hope you are not one of those fagousauri who think that its retarded not having a feel for what it's like to actually use a brake, cuz thers alot that've came before. Not as effective on small wheels, the mountainboards are a bit easier to slow off the axles running huge tires. Its been reviewed by my peers as a great safety measure and then my homies at the skatepark couldn't believe why filmers don't use a similar to "slow your roll". However, its not for me to judge except that using one rocks, cuz I rox the swede duds, and I hates messin em up.
