Mark,
I sent an email to Craig the sales manager and old schooler. He use to skate Winchester and Campbell with Cab when he was a kid. Now he's like 6'9" and needs a super wide board for size 14 feet. He will get back to you. He keeps an eye on all the skate stuff and has been one of my biggest supporters. I went to him when I heard the Switchblade was being retired. It may come back but who knows when.

This helmet actually covers more than most skate helmets. It's the same shell as our best selling Nine.9. snow helmet. The visor does come off. Chris Barker, Richy, Hut, Mike Maysey...wear them. Noah, Dong, myself, Little Sarah, John Ravitch, Miko...wear a Xen which has more holes but cost more. On the GS or Downhill some of us wear a Switchblade full face. They are hard to find these days now that the molds to make them in Italy have worn out.
Bell is coming out with a new Hawk skate helmet in the next two months which is more like what skaters are use too. Low profile and less holes then bike. I like lots of ventilation and don't care if it's not a so called skate helmet. It works and thats all that matters to me.

After reading your postings, I just took a look at the Semi on the Giro website. Two questions: does cover/protect the back of the skull like a conventional skate helmet (i.e., Pro-Tec); and can the visor be removed?

Many people have that same misinterpretation of "single impact". It does NOT mean that once the helmet hits the ground, it will no longer offer any protection if your head bounces again during the same crash. Unless the helmet completely comes apart or comes off, it will still offer some protection in case of another impact (possibly still more than a multi-impact rated helmet). What it means is that the helmet may not offer the same level of protection again, and should be replaced.
Most multiple-impact helmets can't meet the same impact requirements that a single impact helmet can (the few dual certified helmets like ProTec and Geartec being the exceptions), so a single impact helmet may actually be more likely to save your life than a multi-impact helmet in most crashes, even if your head bounces more than once...

I'd replace it, even if there was no visible damage whatsoever. The cost of a new helmet is cheaper than the potential consequences of using a damaged helmet again, and if nothing else the peace of mind is worth it. Look at it this way: you're probably going to spend more on replacing shoes than you do helmets this year anyway, and which is ultimately more important?

Judi, I took a slam on the concrete last night at Coronado. Landed flat on my back. I felt my shoulders hit and then my head. I think I might have a whiplash. My dusty but trusty SEMI 'seems' OK. There is a noticable but small dent(maybe 1/4-1/3 cm deep) right on the very lower edge where the shell meets liner along with some very minor seperation of the shell from the liner in that area. What's the status of my helmet? It appears to be as structually sound as the day I bought it. Has this one hit compromised it's abilty t protect me?
I'd rather not drop the coin for a new one right now, but value your opinion. Your the one that turned alot of us onto Gyro's. Thanks!!!

By the way your reference to (no indication that it is YOUR sport too except that you are here) I'm here because I skateboard. Yes, I work at a company that makes bike, skate, snow and motorcycle helmets. We sponsor riders like Lance and Hawk and we have riders buying our stuff that we don't pay. It's about making products so people can play hard but be safe.
Skate safe.
I'm not trying to sell anyone helmets just offer some tips. Buy what works for you.

What ever dude. Just thought I would help. If your going to ask for help your going to get opinions. Why don't you ask Noah Heine, Michael Dong and The "World Champion" Gary Fluitt how there Giro helmets preformed. One hit on some models is one hit that can save a life.

Cool! That's JUST what I was going to do with my new helmet... ride off huge cliffs with one. Now all I need is a Carbon-Kevlar skateboard to match.
You know, somehow I believe these people would do this kind of thing with a marshmellow strapped to their heads if this was all that was available. So in some sense I do not see this as all that much of an endorsement. Almost the opposite.
Moreover, I believe that even if this is a good indication of the awesome strength of the helmet, it STILL says NOTHING at all about the fact that these are one-hit helmets, and that the use you are referring to is not the same use as what I want to use it for... Is a bicycle helmet always a good skateboard helmet? No. Is measuring the suitability of a helmet by the antics of snowboard pros always a good indication that my braincase is safe? No.
Look, perhaps these pros have a contract that gets them as many of these things as they want, but I don't have that contract. Also, in MY sport (no indication that it is YOUR sport too except that you are here) there are times when in ONE crash your head hits more than once...

My thinking has matured considerably since I started researching the issues. I am looking exclusively for Dual Certified helmets now which are certified to both the CPSC bicycle helmet standard and the ASTM F1492 Skateboard helmet standard. See: http://www.bhsi.org/helmet05.htm Search "Dual Certified" See also http://www.bhsi.org/skatplus.htm On this latter page they do not list the Pro-Tec AceSpade, but it is in essence a Ace Freestyle with a chinbar. It IS dual certified.
People, flush the hype. Do the homework. I don't care what Lance Armstrong wears, much less some cliff jumping freerider. I jumped more than my share of huge cliffs back in the day (on skis) (Next time at Mansfield, check the cliff under the Gondola... that's one. there are better ones back in the woods too.) I didn't need a helmet (ya... right!). I was good. Was I smart? Hell NO!
I admire these guys, but my head is my own, and their abilities (and luck to date) do not supercede what I can see by doing only a modicum of my own research.

The Mad Max II has a carbon fiber model. I look at photo's daily of freeriders going huge with these helmets on. Richy Schley would be one to check on. He rides off huge cliffs with one. I use a Switchblade but they aren't available anymore. Isabelle and her son will be wearing matching Mad Max's at the Bear. That's just my two sents.

Anyone know anything sunbstantive about these helmets? Took a beef recently with my old single-impact helmet and it's time to get a new one. Been thinking about full-face since I kind of skinned my chin, I do snowboard, and will be doing some slalom skateboarding this summer... probably makes sense for me to be riding with fullface.
I looked at Giro, Bell... both good, but kept looking. Came across the Pro-tec Ace and Ace Spade Full Face. It seems that these helmets come with SXP, a different formulation of EPP that allows for multiple impacts... some performance lost over multiple hits in the same area... but still... a multiple impact helmet...
The new liners are dual certified to meet both the CPSC bicycle helmet standard and ASTM F1492 Skateboard requirements, so I am thinking this is a really good thing. From the looks of the Ace, the chin bar is nice and rounded and not pointy, something people point to and say could cause the neck to wrench in just the wrong type of beef.
Any firsthand knowledge or even opinions as to whether I should consider these helmets will be appreciated. I guess it's between Giro Mad Max II, Bellistic, and the Pro-tec Ace or Ace Spade. Given that the Giro and the Bell are not rated for multiple hits, and their visors are bolt-ons, I am leaning towards the Pro-tec... tell me if I'm nuts please.

I talked to the guys from icaro and they say they use max 1 cm polystorol foam for protection. Motorcycle helmets have 3 cm. They try to get information from snell and the ECE rating about their standards and maybe they make a new safe aerodynamic helmet you can skate with. Would be so cool !

Anyway the problem is not here... A lot of riders are wearing this kind of helmets (French SC8 team...Rogers Bros have a white one I think...and I have one too) and Ive NEVER heard about anything concerning those hemets...
But you're right, they break easily... Let me remind you that normally helmets of any kind have to be thrown away after 1 and only 1 hit!!!
Personnally I would recommend the Skyrunner from Icaro...He is not as fragile as the 4fight and it's the exact same one without that aerodynamic thing behind your head...

Took a beef on Friday night while pumping my board in circles, damm rock. Landed on my left knee. I was wearing my pads. Unfortunately the knee cap took the blow and I ended up straining my ACL. I called wild Bill from Pro Design and he was kind enough to help me pick out a set of pads with a bit more protection. Very pleased with the service. Should be here in time for Luna Slalom Jam. The helmet is super lite only 950 grams normal mtb helmets are close to 1kg and most motor bike start at 1300 and up.

I was just wondering, how do these helmet hold up for DH racing? I currently have a motorcycle racing helmet but a major problem is the weight. I now have chronic problems with neck pain (crunchiness) when I move my neck about. I was considering a new helmet and the Icaros seem like a good choice. I know that several top racers use them, such as Tom Edstrand and Bricin Lyons, but I'm curious to know how they would hold up. Anyone have experience with these? Should I consider a different company or helmet?

I need to get a new helmet as my last one in no in two pieces and I am looking for some advice. I don't need a fullface, already have one, but I would like a skate helmet that is the following:
Offers decent level of protection.
Offers decent ventilation.
Will fit on my big a$$ noggin. (23")
So far my biggest problem has been fit. Even the helmet I just crashed was a bit tooo snug. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just got a Bell "Bellistic" model for G/S racing, I got a Medium according to the head measurement taken from Bell's website. It feels like it's on the snug side like it would give me TMJ pain if I wore it long enough (which I won't be, I'll be taking it off right after each run due to the hot head factor). Otherwise it's not bad and feels good and secure and like it should be pretty protective for what I'm going to be using it for. Is this snugness around the jowls/TMJ normal for a full face helmet? I'm guessing snug is better than not snug. Thanks - Paul Howard
