I may vaguely remember that Skuda board, does the metal strip go around the bottom of a pretty steep kicktail?I think it dates to the mid seventies,some of my earliest childhood memories.

I`ve been writing about this board i bought, but nothing seems to be the right one!
It`s red, flat, made out of some kind of hard plastic (non-flexible) and it`s written "skuda" with big letters on the top. Its 22,5 inches long and it is a little bit heavy for it`s size!
It also got a line, which i think is made out of metal, you really can`t see it because it`s covered with the red plastic! I`ve never seen any photos of this board.
Do you know which board i mean?

i used to have a sims 3/4" oak plank with a glued on wedge
. it was done so that it was difficult to tell, the bottom of the board was even swept up. i was never able to break the board but i did go through a lot of bennett plastic baseplates until i put trackers on it. the board was as heavy as a tank...impossible to ollie

I JUST BOUGHT SOME OLD SKATE DECKS AT THE SWAP MEET, I TOOK THE PAINT OF OF ONE AND FOUND OUT IT WAS A BOARD FROM A COMPANY CALLED 'JMBO' ITS SOLID WOOD, ABOUT A FOOT LONG AND 5 INCHES WIDE. THE OTHER ONE IS MADE OF SOME SORT OF PLASTIC, ITS ABOUT A FOOT AND A HALF, AND IS FROM A COMPANY CALLED 'CALCOMP' PERFORMANCE SKATEBOARDS.DOES ANYONE KNOW THESE COMPANIES, OR IF THEY'RE WORTH ANYTHING?

Makaha having the patent on a kicktail sounds impressive,but when I saw the picture in "Endless Grind" I could understand why the never got to collect, it looks more like a handle to keep your knuckles from dragging on the ground.

Actually the original G&S Warptail had a glue on wedge that was shaped to look like it was bent. The Warp II was a ply deck with an actual bent kicktail. There were boards like the Hobie Park Rider that was two piece steam bent ash. Sort of a two ply deck. Steam bending takes more time to set and cure, which made it hard to mass produce. Currently, most companies can glue and press 5-7 new school decks at a time, in one press, wait 30 mins. and reload the press.
From the more info than I needed catagory,
Larry Stevenson of Makaha Skateboards actually gets credit for the kicktail. He had a patent that he registered in the late 60's. Another company came along in the early 70's and started making boards with kicktails, Larry tried to defend his patent in court, but the judge ruled in favor of the defendant and Larry never made a dime off of his invention.

Most kicktails in the primevil era were added wedges ,exeptions like the g+s warptail (duh)and taperkicks, though Sims did have a flying wedge model (Ayries),some people actually prefered wedges for their positive foot lock and solid feel,as late as Chris Stoples' Casters, wedges were still being made, Caster by the way had some of the absolutely toughest plywood of all time, their wood was so solid;I think because they made glassed boards (internal glass plys) so their laminations were all epoxy, most logons and such were just glued on wedges with the bottom of the board sanded away a little to make it look like a bent tail at six feet or six mph so if you only saw them in pictures that is what you would think.By the way ,an interesting fact thats stuck with me is that the trees that todays plys come from are from much younger faster growing trees than back in circa 1978,so the wood is not as good ,but for the most part the glues and the presses are higher tech.

i was looking at some pix of old hardwood decks, and i was wondering (since i don't have a chance to handle them myself)...how were the kicktails shaped? i originally thought steaming, but on one picture there's a different grain on the kicktail...i'm curious...thanx

Hey Robio, I have an even better Banzai than that. It has the original Banzai trucks and old "Coast Cruiser" wheels. The red urethane risers are about 1/2" thick so the thing rides like a Cadillac. Thought you'd like to know. Sincerely, Your Girlfriends Dad.

i got this alluminum bonzi board that my girlfriend's dad gave me. i put some old yo-yo's on it that i had. it's crazy cause it is so short. i'm used to my tahoe longboard 44'. it is a lot of fun though. i can carve down my 20 foot drive way. ha ha

When I started skating boards were 24-32 inches long 5.5- 8.0 wide with bigger boards being Sunsets ,and certain models like Torger Johnsons(logon earthskies)6.5-7.5 was typical.

They came in a wide variety of sizes over the years,maybe as small as 28,30,32x7.5,to as big as 33x10.5 Sims usually made board in three sizes per width so the 33 probabely had a 31.5,and a 30 as siblings.Anybody have/had an "Experimental"or was it just an ad?

Also, does anybody know the variations in dimensions of the Lonnie Toft decks? I'm talking about the regular deck -- not the 8-wheeler.
