Fancy That

Craig, I would have to answer "60ish" because I don't honestly know. The closest thing to being clocked (at speeds over 55) was using a car's speedometer, not very scientific. I know that I've gone faster on other hills, but I don't know how much faster. After about 55mph, every 1mph feels like an addition 5mph. The sound in your helmet is amplified and you feel slight body movements having an effect in the way that you steer (point your helmet in the direction you want to go). Ground effects are either minimal or nonexistent at these speeds. I stand up quickly from a tight tuck and feel little or no vertical lift, and the horizontal forces are such that the transition is smooth and does not blow me off of the back of the board. The human body is neither a parachute nor a foil and airbraking is a natural. Bumps in the road can give you that "elevator" feeling but I've never levitated.

If you have the nerve to do it, the only thing that prevents skaters from going faster is minimizing the forces that work against us. That is why I got the "fancy equipment". I started speedboarding 5 months ago as an Amateur up in Mammoth. My helmet was the only "fancy" piece I used on that day, my own carbon/kevlar board failed tech spec and I had to borrow a Dregs speedboard that I had never ridden before just to race. I wore all white (cow skin) leathers, which are often confused with the fancy outfit I put together later. I qualified 7th overall (Ams & Pros) and won all my heats except the final where Mark Golter prevailed and I took second. I was hooked.

You have to look at this from my position. I don't have too many years ahead of me in speedboarding; eventually it won't be worth the risk at my age. Until then, I've decided to rise as quickly as I can and this means practicing and getting what I think is fast gear. The helmet, kevlar leathers and speedsuit were all available at a surf shop about an hour from my house, and the spandex suit from a dive shop nearby. It cost money. Money I worked hard to earn. The guy makes the stuff himself. Since I don't work for free I didn't expect a guy with zero professional race experience to be handed an expensive set of protection for free. The gear is designed for speedskiers but works beautifully for speedboarders as well. It is best suited for straighter non-technical hills, many of which are found in American races including qualifiers for both the X and Gravity Games. Given its apparent performance and availability, I'm surprised that more riders haven't given it a chance. Seattle would give me my first chance to test out my theories.

There were a lot of giggles and ribbings about my skintight outfit before the Seattle race, and a ban on my leathers and speedsuit afterward. Although I beat van Bommel head to head in the two man, he beat me by 3" in the four man final. Although I finished ahead of Todd Lehr in the four man, he beat me by 3" in the two man final. In essence, there was no one who I hadn't finished ahead of in my first ever Pro race. I took home prize money that exceeded the cost of my helmet, leathers, speedsuit, board, plane ticket and expenses. Not a bad return on investment and the experiment was a success. What's interesting is that even though Hardwick, Dansie, Kludy, Mallard, Sherlock, Lehr, Dread, Flyndt, Golter, Rogers x 2, Coleman, Cavey, Lee, Lowery and other top riders participated, the only thing people seem to remember is that I wore tight clothes. You should have read the posts on this website before I started racing. "Helmets don't make any difference" and "it's all about attitude" and "my preying mantis stance kicks ass..." and "aerodynamics don't make a difference until 100mph". It was comedy. Now people like to say that the equipment I use is unfair, that I have "bought" my way into speedboarding, that aero helmets shouldn't be allowed. It appears the some believe that anyone could just squeeze into my gear and start winning races. There's no need for skill, a fast start, timing, balance, turning, tucking, drafting, passing, braking and stopping if you have an expensive outfit. The fact that I've been skateboarding for over twenty-five years, surf, snowboard, play ice and roller hockey means nothing, it's all in the suit. The fact that I fall on my own, get taken out from behind, break toes and sprain wrists and race and ride injured means nothing, the only dues I've paid is with my checkbook.

What I hope SOMEONE appreciates is that, aside from having a lot of fun doing what I enjoy most, what I am doing is called research and development and it doesn't just benefit me. I share every important discovery that I make. I put pictures and video on sites that I get no help with. I answer a lot of emails from people who don't want to risk sounding dumb in a public forum. There are a lot of people who don't get the opportunity to try all the equipment, ride with other good riders, and find out for themselves what works and what doesn't. If I can prevent someone from paying too much unnecessarily, save someone from serious bodily injury or teach someone how to do something well, then I will consider it all worthwhile. I talk a lot. I know this. I teach. I preach. I think I have a lot to say. I hope that I do so well in South Africa that my riding will do all of the talking for me. Even if I win, there's a pretty good chance that you'll be hearing from me again soon.

The fastest i have gone is around the low to mid 60s, it was on the same 70mph but we had a very very strong headwind, the day i was invited. and it was Gary Hardwick who was lifted off the board. I cant afford an aero helmet yet, but the day will come. All the TVS guys (Kludy,Golter,Gary,Flindt,me) have ridden this hill. of which Rick and Gary have alot of experience on this one as well as another, they carry the speed for a while, the hill is about 1.25 miles.

I just want to say i'm looking forward to racing kludy, warburton, and that other guy whose name i recognised from NCDSA, in Cape Town next year. Looks like a crazy list of competitors....hardwick, dansie, dr go not quite fast enough to beat craig, rogers sisters, manu, cem, roli...blah blah.

It's going to be crazy. What happened to the rest of you people? Chris C?...I heard rumours that you were going fly over here in your oldschool bus??

DT was talking about being lifted off his board at those high speeds. Wow. I found that pretty interesting. I've only gone 90km/h (about 53mphish), but i didn;t think it would make that much difference at higher speeds. Any other wierd stories about what happens to you at that speed? The other thing is that over an extended time period (say about10secs) the fastest i've managed is only about 50mph. My 90kph was only very brief. when you guys top 70mph, how long do have you hold that for.

Chris C, you have a big (keyboard) mouth, and some fancy equipment. Please excuse the focus on you, but i'm quite interested as to what your top speed is??

should make it OURS while we still have the chance.

Every time I see the name "Kanoa" I think of the seventies because I worked, skated for and had a Chapstick made by Kanoa Surf in Palos Verdes. Now I will have to make the adjustment and think of Buck Rogers in the 21st century and all of the wonderful, useful technological advances that the motorization of our sport will bring.

I may as well retire. Freestyle, slalom, longboarding and speedboarding are dead. Gravity is obsolete. The Ollie is the Holy Grail and robots will replace other riders. Farewell cruel world.

Speed Butt

PSR, I think that East Coast riders deserve a lot of respect. The problem is that there is so much going on in California and so many companies and riders here that it is easier to cover the local talent at the cost of overlooking a lot of talented riders elsewhere. Certainly the weather and Pacific Ocean contribute to the large surf and skate and ski culture and there a lot more events here as a result. Then you have an event on the East Coast and a number of "Cali-centric" skateboarders and lugers decide that "no one is going to be there" and it compounds the problem by them not showing up. There is a tendency for guys here to say "no way man, you should come out here, everything is here" and not realize how important a truly "national" competition would be. I went to the DC Downhill event and Jester Hill Ohio event for the experience as well as the kharma. Having John out here for the West LA College race was the best thing to happen in years. The outcome was even sweeter. How would I be able to maintain my lovely nickname "Number Two" if he weren't here? I think the next step here is synchronize our quivers and hone our riding skills for some similar race courses and have advanced notice so that everyone knows the who, what, where and when of every event and be able to publicly commit to them in advance.

Now I'll attempt to tie buttboarding to speedboarding so our posts don't wind up in the Guest Book. When talking to Darren Lott the other day about buttboarding in Europe (oh yeah, there is land east of the Atlantic isn't there?) he was telling me about how they want to preserve buttboarding as lie down skateboarding and how they really want to see the boards ridable when standing up as well. I was telling him about a speedboard that I have designed that looks a lot like his buttboard. I'll call it the "TLES" which stands for Todd Lehr Eliminator Series which means that I want to explore a parallel stance with feet apart in the straighter "drag race" style venues. Todd is one of the few who ride in a parallel "cannonball" type stance in racing. My stance will be wider to allow air between the legs and I need a 12" wide x 48" long deck, the same rough size as the buttboards. It's kind of hairy riding this way but I want to R&D it's up side. Speedskiers are doing 154mph in a similar stance on snow, who knows. One thing for sure, Lehr is fast and tough to draft.

The buttboard/luge debate will continue on. The latest arguments against allowing the buttboard in "real" luge races is that buttboarder style is to different and won't look right. PLEASE do yourself a huge favor and check out Darren Lott's "photo exhibit" on the subject. It's all in good fun. For a good laugh check out:

It's now a "buttboard"

Chris,I had the ugly experience of showing up at the first X-Games(in Providence,R.I.)with my trusty ol' Luge,which is wooden(the frame made from crutches),only to find that it was illegal under the rules that Pereya + company had wrote up.This board is still ridden,and is still way fast.I've done 70+ mph runs with it several times,and it out-corners most newer sleds,especially on rougher roads.I stil don't like the term 'buttboard' as a label to describe my old (made in '81)luge sled,butt it's nice to know I can legally race it again without resorting to being in a 'vintage' class.BTW,thanks for the pics of that last race!Maybe Mr.Gilmour's victories will gain us 'Easties' a tad more respect.

Aero Gear

In gravity based unassisted speedboarding, an aerodynamically superior helmet is the single largest contributing factor to the speed of the rider, given that the riders maintain reasonably good tucks and ride otherwise comparable equipment. If the leading edge (the "tip" of the helmet) is blunt or does not effectively pass clean air over and around the blunt shoulders of the rider, you are making yourself draft bait for other riders to devour. A speedsuit just makes the package that much sweeter. Clean-Clean. The faster you go, the more important and effective aerodynamics become. On more technical hills such as GMR I was getting smoked by Hardwick, Dansie and Kludy because they combined the best of both worlds, technical skill and aero helmets (I had only the helmet). Add knowledge of the hill and it becomes harder still to hang with.

As far as ideal conditions go, here's what I would want for myself:

ROAD: Long, wide, straight, smooth, dry and with a proper uphill runoff. If the road were asphalt, cold to avoid soft, slow conditions.

WIND: Either none at all or a heavy tailwind, depending on whether or not an * asterik would appear by your name forever haunting you as being a fast rider, only in a tailwind.

AIR: Thin, dry air. This usually translates into warm air at high altitudes.

GEAR: Landingham helmet, stretch kevlar "leathers", speedsuit, tallest allowable wheel (4" or 5" depending...), Randal style trucks, 48" long by 10" wide deck (homemade) and the jury is still out on the bearings.

IMHO none of above falls outside of what the generally accepted standard skateboarding. This is not to say that other methods of acheiving speed are not valid or legitimate, but is easier FOR ME to apply meaning to skateboarding records that are attained in this fashion. That is why other skaters and I accept Gary's record. Even though Gary and others have gone faster on other occasions, the one that people respect is the one that was carefully considered and document by Guiness.

The guy who rode his bike at over 100mph had a HUGE front sprocket on his bike that was impossible to leverage until he was towed up to 70mph. He then got behind a vehicle that had a specially designed clean air drafting shield complete with a safety rolling pin across the back to prevent his front tire from bumping the shield. The vehicle pushed all the air around the sides of and over him and he was able to acheive his goal. Tucked in behind a vehicle like that, the rider experiences little to none of the airflow that he would otherwise have to overcome. All of the downward and upward and lateral pressure is removed and so there is no need for a tuck, he can ride high in the saddle and focus on pedaling. Anyone who has ever pulled in close behind a big truck on the freeway or who has windscreen on his motorcycle knows how different it is from being out on his own.

Although a skateboarder behind a motorcycle is different (and risky), many of the same principles hold. Then you get into "how about a fatter motorcycle" and "how about a fat driver on the same motorcycle" and "how about a motorcycle with its windscreen on the back of the motorcyle" and on and on and on. I don't think that the record books want to have to deal with so many "flavors" of the same basic discipline and choose instead to honor only those records both attempted and attained in a generally accepted and sanctioned event.

Beating a dead horse, part two. A buttboard IS a luge. They ARE allowed to race in the "conventional" luge class. What is disturbing is that a rule was added specifically to prevent an unmodified buttboard from competing in this class by requiring the front end to extend 1 1/2" in front of the riders toes. No one wants to race a conventional luge in the "buttboard only" class, but the opposite is not true. A number of people are citing all sorts of safety issues and riding styles as reasons for the buttboard's exclusion but the real reason is some think that they are "hokey" and don't look high tech and they are afraid of being beaten by one.

silly speed

Many people think it is silly to ride skateboards as an adult, don't listen to them. Others think it is ok, but think it silly if you start to get creative about how you ride, don't listen to them. But do listen to specific safety concerns. Thumbs up to freedom and trying different.

If someone wants to draft motorcycles, get towed, use full coverage fairings, strap on rocket engines, or whatever they really need to do - then all the power to them. It's not our place to say they are silly, it only means they are playing by a different set of rules. If only one person is into rocketboarding and sets "records" at it, I'm interested in it. But also would not expect it to have any impact on luge or traditional standup records, and would have nothing to do with racing (unless a second rocketboarder steps up).

Towing is not silly, at least at lower speeds. I'd rather hang onto a car going up a hill than sit on my fat ass. Add a rope and it is even more fun. Getting towed downhill is just as valid of a start as building a big ramp - but only as a start, otherwise it is a different class.

All you guys get my respect, whatever and however you get your speed.

The Need For Speed

This was 14 months ago. While I was out California way I took my luge (this was before retirment) with me. I found a couple of good hills well low and behold guess who also came out to luge. The Dregs guys. Let me tell you. Aero helmets and speedsuits DO make a big difference. These guys were way faster than me in my motorcycle leathers and wedge helmet. They were even nice enough to take me to the nearest hospital when I did some chin scrape-age since the wedge helmet doesn't cover the chin. Man them guys were fast. Guess from the Gravity Games on TV reults. They still are fast as hell.

The Need For Speed

Everyone here is going "oh its not real, its not that, you guys are stupid,blah blah", hey when was the last time you went faster than 65! Some of you dont even realize what it is like and are talking from the an iq i wont even go into. Right now the envelope is around 75 and the next big number will be around 80 unasisted. But there are certain individuals that want to try and brake 90 with the help of drafting a motorcycle down a hill. What you guys dont realize is there isnt much differance in how the speed feels from 20-35,40. From 45 and up every 5 mph is a big differance! When your over 60 you better have a solid tuck, cause when your around 65+ you become the boards wing, and if you come out of your tuck you can be lifted off your board, its happened to Gary on one of his 70+mph runs, he came off about an inch than landed back on his board with his feet all weird. No one knows yet how much harder it will be at faster speeds, but i'll tell you there's those that feel the need for speed and will find a way! This last year has been my first year and i have learned so much from guys like Gary, Manu, Mallard,Leemo, Kludy, Cliff,Rogers bros these guys are all world class riders and i'll tell you another thing about the helmets and speedsuits. They make a huge differance. Those are two of the few major things that make you go alot faster, and the faster you go the more of an advantage they give the rider wearing them. At the Campo race the final was Gary,Biker,Lehr, and Mallard. Biker and Gary had aero helmets and speedsuits, they instantly pulled ahead and won by about 50feet and all 4 would have been close if they were wearing the same. I have found that the helmet is good for at least 5mph boost up to around 40-55 and even faster when the speeds are increased. Same goes with suits.

Drafting

I think it would be interesting to see how much help a person could get by drafting a vehicle, although I don't think I would ever want to try it. A person would have to follow close to the lead vehicle and I can just see it having to come to a sudden stop for some reason, (read SPLAT!). In cycling once a person is going 30 m.p.h. 90% of their effort is used up just moving air out of the way, so aerodynamics definitely play a major part in speedboarding. Even tempature and alititude would an effect. Has anyone studied how much aero suits and helmets help? (BTW the land speed record for cycling was set drafting behind a van on the Bonnyville Salt Flats).

I'm fairly sure i've seen the video,and a big rollin was built,looked like the rollin on the monster ramp Danny Way used for the high air record,you may be thinking of Matt Hoffmans high air records,or the recent jumps over 11 cars and a boat by Colin Winklemann,both BMX stunts,both would have been better if no outside source of power except muscle,gravity,were employed on their respective vehicles on their special terrain.

I would have to agree that a "powered start" would be/is very dangerous and foolhearty. I would councel anyone against doing this under any circumstance.

However, a "drafted" record run would be very interesting in my opinion. A pack of riders drafting each other, going for a "team" (bigger team than "team chaput" or "team hamm"), or a group record. All of the fast skaters that I have watched are like ducks and geese... they're faster together.

As far as being "towed" by a vehicle... I wouldn't even show up to watch... couldn't bear to see the aftermath of a crash.

Drafting behind vehicles... might be interesting... I'd show up to watch that one... HR

Powered starts have very little to do with VALID record attempts,and I'm VERY surprised that something so SILLY AND DANGEROUS has gotten any play at all on this forum,largely in light of the fact that three-digit IQ's aren't rare around here.I mean fun's fun and all, but let's get real.THE NAME OF THE GAME IS SKATEBOARDING,and if we try to introduce cycles,cars,and jetpacks into the mix,we are more than likely to create situations that will be 'non-recoverable'for SOMEONE.We collectively have a long way to go simply in terms of reducing rolling resistance ALONE.The true frontiers of what can be accomplished within the parameters of the rolling platform itself have yet to be reached,and until our tools approach quite a bit closer to final form,WE'VE GOT WORK TO DO.

I look at the speed record this way: The fastest-skateboard-behind-a-car world record may not be as PURE of a skating record as a fastest-skateboard-down-a-hill record, but they are both way cooler than most-hotdogs-eaten-in-one-sitting record or the longest-toenail record. It's all relative.

This is what passionate guys do... they argue their points (not the arguments that one might have with their spouse, but the lawyer type) What you have here is a bunch of individuals who feel strongly about many subjects... and this one is no exception.

If you think this is heated, you ought to start talking with Chris C about the effect (or lack of) of various types of truck mounting scenerios!! Always good for 30 minutes of raised blood pressure! But the thing is, is that it's not personal and very good ideas are hatched/refined. The attacks are not meant to be directed at the individual, but at the point of view.

For me personally... I love these guys! I love to ride with them... argue with them... eat mexican take-out with them!

So young man... grab a position and chime in!! HR

No one is arguing, or calling names. its a debate. re-read our posts. no one called anyone any names, we did have a misunderstanding though. Chris brought to my attention that i put words in his mouth, and i used one word (on accident) that may be misconstrued and i apologised. you see, we are all adults here the point of this website is to share ideas, reviews etc, no one requires you to take part. Even though i dont see eye to eye with Chris on this debate, it doesnt mean that i dislike him or think poorly of him. I respect him as a rider and everyone is entittled to their own opinion. I know Chris often has a lot of time and he is a skilled writer, good for him, he may have the luxory of lots of time, also bravo there is nothing wrong with that, is there? i dont always have a lot of time and to spend 25 minutes typing something that may help someone understand what i am trying or was trying to say - then i'll do it.

Guys, I mean, seriuosly. World records are world records. You could add on as many pre-fixes as you want, ex."fastest skateboarder drafting a vehicle, fastest skateboarder getting towed by a motorcylce, blah blah blah" It will still be a record. If someone wants to get thier name in the book bad enough, they'll find a way. But a competition for the record on the same hill with most of the same gear, but different styles is about the best idea they have come up with yet. Many of us have broken the record unoficially, but the fact is, Gary's name is in the book. Why don't we leave the record setting criteria up to Gueinness before there are a lot of hard feelings. Or perhaps have some sort of meeting about it. I like to come to this site to get info, not to see friends argue, and insult eachother. I know I'll probably get a bunch of crap for this post, but if someone wants, we can settle it at the next race :). My two cents. Later

When I type, I usually write off the top of my mind, I don’t have any hidden agendas or vendettas. When I typed “What then Chris, you mean to tell me that you wouldnt consider that seperate record legit, thats such bullshit” I was referring to the words legit and meaningful as the same , I WAS WRONG AND I AM SORRY FOR MISUSING ONE WORD!!! I didn’t even think someone would be so legalistic! Chris have you considered working as one of the president-elect’s lawyers? You completely avoided the point I was trying to make. (shnitzel is the only one who seemed to hit on what I was getting at). And then went on a ranting filibuster about the spirit of America blah blah blah. I never mentioned anything about not letting others try, but Chris you did – “...try not to die and don't let anyone else try.” Your comments on drafting vehicles weren’t with my point either, they simply downplay and avoid it. Same with what you typed below regarding the luge vs buttboard, its all filibuster. I’ll try and make my point more clear, to which it cant be misinterpreted. On one hand you feel the luge and buttboards should be able to race in the same class, because it would be meaningful to the buttboarders (by the way the new open class has nothing to do with why the debate began - for those that are interested check www.streetluge.com for more info, its quite interesting and a good debate) but on the other hand you said a drafted vehicle speed record is not meaningful. This is what made me upset, and this is my point, who are you to declare what records are meaningful and which are not, Chris, you often speak on behalf of all skaters and this false generalization is wrong. Not ALL of us need acceptance for our deeds/ego/pride, and Chris not all of us have something to prove, the only reason I ride is because I have fun doing it and because I love it!

Remember, in order to break a record, one must first be set! Roger Hickey set the first official skateboard speed record, so did this have no meaning. Yes it did, it stayed in tact for years, until Gary Hardwick took it (and Roger was there to defend it!).

Also this brings up another issue: Andy McDonald holds the longest skateboard jump at 52 feet – and he was towed by a motorcycle. Should his record be meaningless, because he held onto a motorcycle instead of going down a hill?

In theory, cold air is denser and will present greater aerodynamic drag compared to warmer air. I would expect that you would feel more wind on cooler days, but may actually being going slightly slower. Opps, but that is not your question.

Hot roads are softer and would expect them to be slower. Does it make a little difference or a BIG difference? it a cold road really that much faster?
