Thanks Chris for the photo of your curved stock. I am going to try Mario's method of getting a concave deck. My first try at a concave buttboard (third buttboard built!) looks pretty good. Got it painted and padded. I used that camping cushion and it's great stuff. By using contact spray and tacking them by layers, I got a really good form. If I can get hold of a digital camera, I will put up somw pics of my boards. With the Olympics going here in Utah, I just pray for clear roads to test out the boards. Laters

No, I make my own plywood. But the idea is the same. My concave is twice as steep, I used a 27" diameter wheel to trace the arc. The pre-made plywood is 30" radius (60" diameter) if I'm not mistaken.
Last night I made a new concave downhill board using less concave in front and more in back (more stiffness back there, as it will be tapered). Unfortunatley that used up my wood supply, so I probably won't make my rockered/concave buttboard any time soon (lower CG). Which is just as well, I'm still getting used to the one I'm riding. I finally put some nice maple rails on it, and am dying for a test run. Mark, hc, start your engines!

Congrats to the South African Classic Lugers!
I just found my old post about the curved plywood in the Speedboarding forum. Mario, is this what you are using?

It's been a while since I wrote anything, so here's an observation I made last time we went to the garage.
I had previously thought that mixing and matching wheels was a good idea, because of the uneven wear I was experiencing. So I threw my green kryptos on the front and white 74a power paws on the rear. Contrary to what you might think, the 82a kryps grip a lot better than the 74a paws. I got what I was asking for, which was to break the rears away before the fronts. And guess what? I was slow. Understeering is definitely faster and gives more control than oversteering.
Got my digital camera, will take some pictures of my concave buttboard and post them soon.

Scotland news. Things are well in progress for this years race. The film crew are going to be there again this year so we should have some of the days footage again after the riders meeting in the bar which everyone thought was cool.We will also be at the same hotel as last year and they have done a deal on the rooms again (£23 B&B).We will have gravity bikes this year and may be a slalom and half pipe comp in evening.
There are a few problems with the IGSA which are could affect the Scotland race and at this stage I don't know if it will be IGSA sanctioned because of the pegless and other issues.
I am happy to race with the same rules as last year which means pegless can be used at this years Aviemore race. If told by the IGSA that this is not allowed at my Race I will pull the race from the world cup. I started this Aviemore race because I love streetluge, and after seeing the X games course which lasted 45 sec I reckoned with a race over 2 miles long and 70mph in Scotland it had to worth getting all the people I have meet over the years to come and race on this road.I think everyone enjoyed Aviemore last year and I want them to enjoy this years race what ever they ride. What I am really asking for here is RACER support if it is not an IGSA race. I know lots of racers have already promised their support for this years race what ever the out come. SO ITS NOW TIME TO FILL IN YOUR ENTRY FORM www.gravitysports.co.uk this will give me some idea on numbers for this year. If you missed Scotland last year check out the m peg movie on the web site or ask some one who was there!
I still have work to do on the web site but I will send out a news bulletin when I make the changes and its also worth checking out the news page. Also if any one can offer to marshal for couple hours this will help me out if needed.
Traws (North Wales UK only)weekend 9th 10th Feb
I will be there on Friday night for an early run Saturday on the 70mph road which is only 10 minutes from the Traws ski slope cabins. Then it should be a day on the back road behind the ski slope which is 50mph and 3/4 mile long. There will be a chance to try a gravity bike, streetluge and buttboard if your up for it. Log cabins are £104 for 2 nights they will sleep between 5&6. This is a fun weekend with some racing. If your interested e-mail me or phone on 0151 353 1246 after 7pm. www.gravitysports.co.uk/traws
Cheers

E.K., I agree, it was confusing at their site. It must be the 90's though because I would remember bringing home a "half pipe".
I believe Brian Kiggins (Haka), Bob Ozman (Kryptonics/Wizard), the Rogers Bros, Darren Lott and I all use the same stuff. I'll be putting together a new conave buttboard with custom trucks and wheels in a few weeks. I'll keep y'all posted.

Thanks Chris for the ply source. Just to clarify which stock I should I order for my use: Is it the quarter halfs (90 degree) or halfs (180 degree) to order? The stock list was abit confusing at their site. The stock that your pic shown would fit my specs. Hey thanks again for your specs. on building a speedboard, that's my next project. Laters. E.K.

You can buy curved plywood with a 30" radius from Anderson International Trading. It comes in 48" lengths and is about 48" wide (I think). You can make several boards from one piece. It's a bit pricy but it may save you some time. Whole luges have been made from this stuff.

I made a jig out of about ten 2x4s. To get the radius, I took a 27" bicyle wheel and traced that arc onto a 2x4 and cut on the line with a band saw. I laid all the jig forms out on a piece of plywood and screwed them in for good measure. I put each ply on the jig, glued it up, and sandwiched another ply on top (no glassing). Finally. I put the top piece of the jig on and clamped the whole thing down with metal square stock over the top and deep-jaw clamps. It was easier than it sounds.
At first the shape was just rectangular, with some cutouts at the front to save weight - the cutouts give a front "wing" look for supporting my legs (I traced a salad bowl for the cutouts). But I found that this gave me too much leverage in the back (read as speed wobbles) and I couldn't get low enough, either. So I cut the back end like a Lott Classic, which allows my shoulder blades to get much lower. Maybe too low, as I can hit the wheels with my shoulders now if I'm not careful. From the top, the board kinda looks like a Formula 1 car without the rear wing.
My next board will be slightly different: I'll make the concave just in the seating area, and gradually decrease it so that the extreme nose and tail are flat. This will effectively drop the center of the board 1.5". I won't have the same leverage, but the center of gravity will be as low as I can get and it should be very comfortable (ass-hugging seat, raised back for a neck rest, raised front for the feet).
Pictures? I'm getting a digital camera this week. I'll be away on vacation until early February, I'll post them when I get back.

Hey Mario, so you got the concave shape of the board by not soaking the plys? Did you still put the plys in a jig to hold it's shape while glassing the whole thing? I just want to know how you got your concave shape. 1 1/2" curve is pretty good. What kind of shape is the overall long? (Lott Classic? or your own concept?). Hopefully I can get my concept buttboard done in the next week and send some pics on-line so you can see my lastest pride and joy. Thanks for the input. Laters. E.K.

I made a concave buttboard, too, and I really like it. I used 4 plys of 1/8" birch plywood (three ply) and Titebond 2 wood glue. It was easy to glue up the thin plys (no soaking required) and the result is a very stiff 1/2" deck. I probably could have gone with 3 plys for a 3/8" deck. I went with mondo concave, a little more than 1.5" from the ends to the middle.
Concave is nice because there's more clearance for the wheels (less chance of wheelbite) in fact, I don't even have wheel wells. As you pointed out, the leverage is much better, too. I may try some sticky stuff on top of the deck as well. First thing I need is rails or cutouts to grab onto.

Reply to Ben's input about "non-skid" deck: I think that's a cool idea and I am going to try that on my third board I am currebtly building. The deck is concave (got some building tips on bending it after soaking the ply from hugh's web site) and it's about 1/2" curved. This would give me more leverage and holds my "butt" to the board (I don't think that's a violation of the classic board rules). It snowed a bunch today, good for the Olympic but bad for buttboard testing. Can't wait until spring and summer. Laters. E.K.

Just finished my first buttboard and found that I slipped around on the deck a little too much for my liking. I didn't want anything as coarse as griptape, so I used a non-skid additive (made from pomus) in my final coat of polyurethane. It works great - just the right amount of texture to keep my body and hands on the board. Just thought I'd pass this on.

The roads here in Utah has been off and on clear of ice and show. Also the weather has been "warm" enough to do some buttboarding. Just got back from bommding some hills this past week and it's been so-so. Some parts of the hills are still wet and patches of show still cover some of the turns. Make some hairy sliding. I was wondering if they are going to have the St. George evcent this year and if so, when? I would be happy to enter it. Anyone knows about this, let me on it. Laters. E.K.

Just dropping a line about my past weekend of buttboarding in Utah. Went searching for a different location to board (the sweet hill in Provo by 7 Peaks was interrupted by the local cops... told it was not illegel but it looks unsafe... uhm-m)and came upon a location north of Camp Williams, near Point of the Mountain (Go to the gallery in the buttboarding site and there's pics of "da point" at Draper. This location is alittle over half a mile long and consist of four turns, two of which comes after two drops into the next. It ends with an S-turn before the run-off. The S-turns is pretty fast and tight. Also with a rough patch of asphalt just before you come out of the last turn. This run is great because of the almost zero traffic, it's a back road running down the gulch. it was windy (as usual at the Point...) and cold but but due to the wind pushing down the hill, the ride was fast. Walking up was a bitch. Tested out my second board on this hill and it was o.k. Missed cue the last turn out of the S-turn and ended up in the mud and sage brush but no damage to me or the board (thank God for leathers). Well going to search for more places to ride in peace this week. Hope to hear from other boarders in Utah. Peace. ek

Howzit! Just want to say that I picked up the art of buttboarding and it is a rush. looking for any buttboarders in the state of Utah. The Olympics are coming next month and this sport is a tribute to it. I have been buttboarding this sweet hill (located south of the hockey venue, Seven Peaks) and it's a rush. I have been averaging in the low 40s and it has three big turns and there's a good run-off to slow down. If anyone wants to join me while it's clear, e-mail me. Laters. E.K.

Just looking for any buttboarders in Utah. I have already gotten a e-mail from a guy who speedboards in Salt lake City. Thanks brah! Buttboarding gets me excited about the winter olympics coming to our state. For the last month or so, when the weather is warm, I have been bomding this one hill in Provo (it's close to the hockey venue, Seven Peaks)and it is a sweet hill. It has three big turns and it's about a half a mile long. So far I have been getting 40's down it. It's a good training hill. Thanks for bringing this rush of buttboarding to this "old school" speedboarder. Hopefully I would like to enter the next St. George event this year. E-mail me if this is happening. Aloha!!! ek

hey mario, if you get a scale, check out your weight distribution, for me 145 lb + 10 lb (board) = 155 lb
laying down, rear 60 lb, frt 95 lb, 38/62 weight distrib.
my rear lightens to 40lb when i sit up, guess the frt goes up to 115 lb, 26/74 weight distrib.
i did this on the flats, on a grade, the number would change...
