Thank hc for the info.
I went to the site you referred and printed off the articles (21 pages to be exact!). Now I got some reading material while staying off of my injuried leg (like the doctor told me to... yea, right). Appreciate it.
Thanks brah.

Howzit hc!
Hey... I appreciate you... there should be more people like you posting to help each other. And of course also post to just shoot the breeze (I do that alot since the crash...ha!).
Thanks for the info. about bike tires. You think that the water would "trail" through the tread of the tire, preventing hydroplaning. Well either way no racing on water for this island boy. The only other time I want water under me is my surf board and surfing a wave in Hawaii.
Laters my friend...

also ek, regarding looking for other riders,

there should be a grass root slalom thing for finding riders.

actually, it should be done by the edi, igsa, etc.

in the mean time,

put up a webpage, and i will put a link on my site.

(for a good example of this, see www.footbag.org under clubs)

ek, regarding traction for bike tires, i have read that the threads (sips or grooves) on bicycles tires are useless in providing extra traction or preventing hydroplaing due to the small contact patch. That smooth tires are the best.
But manufacturers continue to put grooves in their tires because the public think they work.

This is different for cars with much bigger contact patch.

the source is from jobst brandt, author of 'bicycle wheel'
but i have to dig it up.

Attention to anyone who does or even interested in buttboarding and lives in the great state of Utah.
If you have been up on the posting, you should be pretty much familiar with who I am. But if not, I'm E.K. Kepo'o and I am a buttboarder and stock gravity biker. I live in Utah and I am a professional firefighter with West Valley City.
I have a big interest with these gravity sport and I want to start a active list of people who buttboard or gravity bike or just interested in getting into these disiplints. Utah has the most righteous hills and places to ride and I am going to put together a information bank of these spots to ride. Also a list of names riders. I feel that this will help educate people about the sport and offer safe places to ride.
If you live in Utah and ride or are interested in getting started, e-mail me. Here's my e-mail address: ekkpo@hotmail.com

Thanks sean for your view on wet racing. Now I'm not saying that it's all bad and don't try it. It's just happen to go bad for me on my buttboard on that one practice run, and it wasn't even raining at the time I crashed... just the luck of the draw.
There's a good article on a "wet" race from the UK on www.gravitybike.com and Chris Beard (an avid buttboarder) reports on it. Has some great pics.

wet racing is very crazy. i've done it before and it changes the whole aspect of the road. easy turns become near impossible and harder turns get harder, or sometimes easier. some strong advice for rain riders is to ride flashbacks, this is coming from a person that normally rides krypto's. flashbacks have rain traction like nothing else i've ever ridden.

Just alittle advise on "wet" racing:
DO NOT USE GREEN KRYPTONICS!!!!!! THEY SUCK ON WET SURFACES!!! Bob Ozman tried to warn this crazy halopino...
They were the big factor that caused my San Fran Gravity Fest crash last November. The duro rating is 83a (and the color green is not the same as the color green for ABEC 11 Flash backs... no, daaahhh)and they will fly on a fairly straight and dry (understand the "dry" part) road. I have been clocked at 59 mph on the same board I crashed on so green kryptos are good. But add alittle water and speeds of 45mph+ and a off camber corner and... uncontrollable sliding... then crash! Feet first into a rock hard haybale.
Now I raced on my stock bike when the course was like a river and no fall down, go boom. And I was the fastest stock qualifier on the course. Difference? my bike had "rain" tires... the rubber had treads.
I have to admitt, it was a total rush flying down the course with other stockers next to you at 45mph plus, bikes shooting 'rooster tails' of water from their rear tire. It was an experience riding in the back of the pack... like following behind a ski doo on a lake. Yea.. it was a rush but after thinking about it... it was stupid. Hydroplanning most of the time... no real control. A unreal balancing act... The Gods must wanted to watch a stock bike race that day, and the experience gave me different appreciation of the Aerosmith's song, "living on the edge".
Thanks to a combination of skill, luck, and just plain "craziness" of the other stock gbers I rode next to, no body got hurt.
I think it's a bit ironic... I got hurt during a practice run... not a race.
Alot of people have been asking me if I will continue buttboarding. To those who say I am stupid or that if it was them, they would not, I say to them, "I'm a participate in this life... not a spectator."
Aloha and Peace.

Hey EK,

Yea, sorry to hear about your leg. I saw some posts in here about the accident. I was actually hoping to learn a little something from the video, but nobody ever posted a link (I don't think anyway). Well, good to hear you are healing! Be smart and stay off of it.

I will definitely be in SLC. That is where I am flying to. I will send you an email when I get a chance (maybe on the weekend). I'll give you all the details as I currently know them. Then we can talk more about what's up!

Thanks! Andy

Hey Andy... almost forgot. Maybe by then, in May, my leg will be out of the cast (cross my fingers...) and cleared by the doc to play. And hopefully I will be testing a new stock gravity bike I have been building while my leg's been out by then.
Well the best to you.

Howzit Andy!!!
This is the crazy halopino and I am, as far as I know and seen, the only "active" buttboarder in Utah. I don't really know what is down in Moab (spelled right... jokin') but if you are heading up towards Utah County or Salt Lake County, I can help.
Now for some "bad" info... I will not be able to ride with you on these hills (recovering from last year's San Fran Gravity Fest crash... still in leg cast) but I can either advise or even go there to watch or even video tape. Let me know by e-mail if you are coming this way.
(abit of area familiarization: Brigham Young University is in Utah County and University of Utah is in Salt Lake County, if you are familiar with these colleges)

Hi,

Does anyone have any information about the Twin Falls, Idaho area or Maob, Utah??

I am heading to one or both early in May and was hoping somebody had already dialed in some hills in the either area.

Thanks. Andy

the preferred setup for buttboard is flipped RII's like u have and abec 11 70mm flashbacks (i prefer 75a in the front and 72a in the back). to build your own buttboard visit here http://oz.plymouth.edu/~s_clarke/buttboard.html

Howzit Matt!
It's great that you are interestedin buttboarding or referred as "Classic luge". Sound like you at least understand the basics of the sport. Buttboarding started out just using any skateboard and riding it down a hill on your butt. You can get further info. by going to www.buttboarding.com This site has also have a photo gallery that will inspire you to either buy one (Darren Lott's model) or build one of you own. But as a personal advise, get good protective gear! Leathers, full face helmet, leather gloves, and shoes with "tire tread" soles.
Well keep posting here and keep asking for advise. And remember to skate safe (my own personal "learned" advise...).

Hey! This one goes out to Tyler... the guy who is looking for some "cheap" leathers.
I e-mailed you just a few minutes ago and just to hit all the bases I figured to post one here too.
I got a used... and I mean used set of leathers that need repair. It's size 44 US and they need some work (some times duct tape helps. If you are still interested, I will let them go for $60. I said that you may have to take care of the shipment cost but if you really want them, I'll eat it. But you need to let me know this by this saturday. I'm thinking of putting them on ebay at a higher starting bid.
So give me a howler soon.
