Thanks for advice PSR...one thing i did notice was how everything was kind of "pushed" to the limits and build quality has to be high or part failure lands you in deep poo...MK II will be a little more thought out and "designed" i think...will fetch materials tomorrow..

Like I said,Longboardbuddha,the ONLY way to know is to RUN IT !!! I've built maybe eight-nine 'woodies',six aluminium sleds,and two Chromoly racers.They all had different um,'qualities',that needed sorting out.None of them has been slower than A-Mile-A-Minute,though some shouldn't have gone even that fast in retrospect. Look at the fasteners that poke ya,either change them not to poke,or pad around 'em.Get used to fixing your bushing setup from 'gnarly' to 'rugged'.Buy more bearings,but use some as 'trainers' and others for 'going fast'. Get Abec 11's!! Payaso's work well as 'training run' wheels,but are only 70mm,so.. Find these shoes,too-"Footholds"-work shoes with steel toes that are sneaker like in appearance.They slide Smooth,and last reasonably well. Ducttape,well,get used to it,it's Racing after all,and even NASCAR uses ducttape.

screw and bolt heads that stick in yer skin at high g's, duct tape flying off,funny smells from bearings,...expensive wheels that dont grip (might try abecs next)maybe too much flex in corners...randal dh's were ok though maybe not tweaked enough and one bent peg where i got too involved in a curve and hitched myself back into the luge...and my fillings nearly fell out...but 48mph is scary with your butt an inch from the floor.....:)

Recent "Positive" Press for Street Luging
Guys & Gals:
In the last month we have been very fortunate to have been able to get what we feel is "positive press" for the sport of Street Luge.
On August 7 in Forbes.com both GSI and Wild Fro Racing venues are listed as places that a person can learn street luge on a closed road.

Street luging is still perceived by the general public as a dangerous sport, but far behind base jumping, big wave surfing, and bull riding. At least we are not at the top of the list. In our opinion, the perception by the general public of a "dangerous sport" comes from the clips the general public sees of racing crashes and reading about injuries or deaths occurring on open roads.
In late August, in the September 2002 issue of Outside Magazine (bottom of page 57) the Wild Fro Racing Street Luge School at Dinosaur Point in Pacheco State Park, is listed as "The Adrenaline Rush" in the San Francisco Area. No longer "you have to be crazy to do that," but an Adrenaline Rush!
September 3, 2002, in the Modesto Bee, CA (circulation 85K) Breaking Away: Speed demons http://www.modbee.com/sports/story/4246944p-5268294c.html.
This story by Clare Noonan, is an exceptionally positive story on the Wild Fro Racing Street Luge School. Basically following three students, Max Lanman (a young teen), Aneela Manori (a petite gal) and Marc Beylerian (fits mid point in luger profile) through a day of training at Dinosaur Point.
These, and messages like them are important to get out to the general public in order for the perception of our sport to change and allow the sport to grow.
It is our feeling that if we all pull together to help promote and maintain a positive image of our sport, the sport will be able to grow, so riders will be able to enjoy luging around the world on "closed roads."
We at Wild Fro Racing LLC will work hard to continue to get "positive press" for street luging, and will keep you posted as it is published or announced.

Wow folks just finished watching Re;evolution of sport and they had the Red Bull streets of SF on. Awesome. Congrats on pulling that fall into a superman sweeper CC.
I didn't see any of the Slalom on the show but that's fine. Oh, my son said he wouldn't by trying it anytime soon:)

My wife Marilyn collects all sorts of little bits and pieces of information that may or may not prove to be useful in the future thus "Marilyn's Cesspool of Useless Information".
I have only tested this in the bathroom.
According to Marilyn, if you put a small amount of shaving cream on the mirror in the bathroom (I put it on 1/2 the mirror and both sides of one half of a face shield also) and wipe it down until it appears to be gone, the mirror (face shield) will not fog. I put it on both sides of the face shield because it was in bathroom, but in the real world you would just need it on the inside.
Neither the half of the mirror nor the 1/2 of the face shield that had the shaving cream applied fogged. I used my son's "Edge Progel" shaving cream. According to Marilyn this is suppose to work with any shaving cream.
I'm going to try it on my glasses. I'll try Old Spice.

We Australian lugers are facing a crisis. A recent T.V. current affairs program has cast us in a less than admirable light, branding us as idiots, lunatics and a menace to society. They did cover our point of view to a rather limited extent but nothing about the lengths we go to for safety, or our years of experience. Please be considerate and tactful, perhaps mention the safety aspects of the sport that they neglected to cover.
There is a debate on in Australia at the moment about whether to ban luge entirely. Please help us to regain a respectable and professional image after this media misrepresentation.

Longboardbuddha,the only way you'll know is to run it! Take it out easy at first,and work your way up to big speeds a little at a time.BTW,it sounds like you've got a good setup there.Just pay attention to details like having good,smooth bearings,nice no-wobble wheels,and of course check bushings and mounting bolts over between runs.The only kvetch with the Randal's I've heard about has been bent axles(not broken ones,just bent)which my Z-Rollers have been usually free from(yup,have tweaked one axle though-S#!t happens!),but I wouldn't be too alarmed.Go Ride.

ok i have the luge half set up with randal dh's (two front one rear and set it up so the two front trucks can be adjusted according to wheel diameter.....can i run dh trucks like this as they turn ok in a dry run? only i'm a big guy and i'm worried about a part failure now..are z rollers the way to go?

the race will be somewhere in france south west on a secret road (u will be noticed in time ;P )

HC Jono was in a high speed 90deg flat left with his right foot down braking when he was hit from the left side. As he was going into the haybale he attempted to lift his legs to clear the bale but his right foot was trapped under the peg, by the time he got it loose and tried to get it over the bale the ball of his foot hit the top bale (the bales were stacked two bales high) and his heel hit the bottom one. His speed and weight drove his heel through the bottom bale but the top bale stopped the ball of his foot....OUCH!

Jason,and Jake,take a good look at the Z-Roller truck for your luge.It's a more conventional truck design than the Randals,but likewise has the spinning axle design.This is an important feature if you're running long runs and/or riding at high speeds,as it can keep a wheel bearing failure from totally ruining your day.Randals are still a very good truck to luge on,built with speed in mind,and available with baseplate angles to suit the amount of steer/stability you want,an important consideration if you don't want mess with risers or wedges between the trucks and board.Gullwing also just put out a new DH truck that,ironically,looks very much like a Randal.Moe Racing sells kits and trucks,too,so you might want look those over.They are quality pieces.Roger Hickey was also offering a DH/Luge truck (sorry,forgot the name; Billit?-Have to look it up.Duh) that had adjustment built into the pivot,and split axles on bearings. Over on sk8shop.ch (these guys are in Europe,btw),I noticed that they have a truck,the Magnun that's for speedboarding,but I don't know anything about it.If you decide you're going to keep it cheap,and use longboarding trucks,get something that's strong and stable,and fairly wide,too.Weak axles are a bad thing,as are twitchy,turny trucks,so be extra careful if you've just slapped on trucks from a longboard or old-school setup.The stresses you put on axles,wheels,cushions,and pivots at high speed are different than what a longboard truck is built for.Parts failure is BAD,especially at speed.One last thing to note;mounting bolts. Don't just grab any old bolts to put trucks on with.Spend the extra dinero and get bolts that are Grade 5 (or stronger),as things like slapping over expansion joints,manhole covers,roadkill,potholes,etc. will tweak your everyday #10 skateboard mounting screws.
