I'm looking for Luge riders to do demo's (non-paid) at the grass roots street events and meetings that WFSA and SPAUSA are doing in Santa Barbara, Ventura, LA and Orange counties.

This is a great opportunity for those of you that like to interact with the public to exhibit the luge sport to a lot of kids and develop new interest and attract new riders.

At the ARS show in San Diego this last September, A new organization was formed called the World Council of Skateboard Associations. As one of the Board of Directors, I represent Freestyle, Slalom, and Luge. The WCSA has most of the usual skate organization heavies as members as well as many relatively unknown organizationa all over the world.
This makes for a great network to plug into for developing interest in luge activities.

There was no one at ASR meeting to represent slalom or luge so I took on that position.

I was invited to take part because I am the president of WFSA. I have also been active in the slalom world developing GRS activities. Most current luge riders have probably never heard of me, but I was a part of the pioneer era of luge development.
My Staton Team members, Kevin Karnes and Gig Lewis were regular fixtures of the Black Hill and Gelendora Mountain scene. I have been out of the luge loop for some 20 years so I need to be brought up to speed (haha) on what is going on with luge today.

I have qoustions:

Is there a Luge Association or some organized body that represents luge riders and activities?

Are there a few go-to persons that have a luge info network going?

Is there a luge video or two that I can show at meetings etc.?

Street Luge TV Coverage - 11/3/02...6:00PM (PT) KRON-TV Ch 4 Bay Area Backroads

Guys & Gals:

This last May with the help of a number of riders and under the direction of Bay Area Backroads and with the enthusiastic participation of Catherine Heenan, KRON-TV Channel 4 news anchor, a segment was taped on the Wild Fro Racing LLC Street Luge School at Dinosaur Point.

This segment will air on a "Speed Special" on Sunday 11/03/02 at 6:00 pm PT on KRON-TV Channel 4 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Check your cable listings for this program for you cable channel.

The Bay Area Backroads "Speed Special" will start with a segment on the Infinion Raceway (Sears Point), to be followed by the Wild Fro Street Luge School and then a segment on RC model car racing. This should be a really enjoyable show.

Bay Area Backroads is one of the most watched and respected programs in the Greater SF Bay covering things to do and places to go in California.

We hope this program will help to promote a positive image for our sport. Tell your friends, pass the word in class and at work. This is one of the best opportunities for us to expose the general public the real enjoyment of the sport of Street Luging.

Z-Rollers should have Both new and Old School hole patterns if they were stocked from early this summer.These have six holes in the baseplate.Ones from a year or two back were New School.Both these bases have a 'Butterfly' shape.Ones from three-four years (and older!)back were Old School hole pattern.These baseplates are square in shape. San Diego/G+S metal-truck bases fit Z-rollers too in a pinch...

thanks hugh...what i think i'll do is drill a piece of 4mm steel plate in the old school and new hole patterns and have them interchangable (maybe with two holes for coach bolts at either end so they can be bolted on and off the main rail)cheers again

Just a little question but quite important......seeing as longys luge MKII is nearing completion i need to know if the baseplate drill pattern and baseplates of Zrollers/randal luge trucks are the same as randal 180's and randal downhills so if i upgrade the trucks in the future they will fit in the previously drilled holes....thanks in advance

this i belive to be a important aspect to the sport that not many have talked about this .its important to those new riders.

recently i was out on my julian hill ,w/ my girlfriend who has been riding for a little under a couple of months shes getting there , not quite an actual luger yet . but any ways she was going so slowwwwww! and as we made our way down the 3 mile hill soon 2 cars were backed up behind us , she couldnt really see behind me in the chase car, anyways we get to the bottem and there pissed , both cars pull over to rip us a new assholes.

point is make sure if your learning you better ride hills that you can hold the speed limit or above on !

John,Go for it! I'm 38 myself,and have been luging since,um,like '79 or '80. It is a bit easier than Standup,as you're lower(less air drag),it's less tiring,and your braking is far more secure.Downsides are bad visibility(lack of height perspective?),the weight of most sleds,Varmits in the way(An Eastern thing-Cali guys just have cars-we've got critters),Burning through mant pairs of sneakers,and the fact that 60 mph isn't even really a competitively fast speed anymore.The East is pretty much still in the 'avoid the cops' mode from what I've seen,but there are races being held all over. IMHO,you really want to go get a Roger's Brothers and deck it out with Randals or Z-rollers and BIG (83mm minimum,maybe the 92mm?) Abec 11 wheels,although I've heard good things about the big Kryptonics,too.Cherry's would be good for practice,maybe.. Smoke Bombs are slow (rubber) but trustworthy in grip,nice for practice and technical descents. Buttboarding is kinda Luging's little cousin,it's the same style,taken down in CC's to 125 or so -- thus it's cheaper,slower by a bit,and makes for more fun on smaller hills,but are a LOT easier to get back up the hill with. I don't ride solo much anymore,as it scares the wife when I do,but I did for years,often simply passing the cars that shared the roads with me. I can vouch for having a chase car- it can change a whole bunch of things and put them in your favor. On public roads that I do use,I look them over carefully,noting tar quality,driveways,turns/steeps,potholes,and braking zones. To find the best roads,I've gone using Topographical Maps,and scout by zeroing in on the ones that look good on the map. Luging may still be a bit 'underground',but it's a heck of a fun sport,and while I've met some adreniline junkies,most Lugers I know are careful about their rides,and overall a friendly group,until Race Day,that is..

I am sure darren would put in a lot more on buttboarding in his book if he could update it.

Answers john jr.
1)personally i believe riding with your bros is more fun , they push you to the limit and you push them , it makes the course different every time . Plus you always need one other person to trade off on runs as a driver , luging can be fun on short hills , but its the long ones that you need a ride up to the top that make your board worth while , i just stick to butt boards on shorter hills .as far as others go, be patient others will gain interest as they see you ride and soon you will have a crew.
2) more dangerouse than motoX, could be, really thats up to you ,the people you ride with, the hills that you choose . on a race course everything is controlled ,as a recreational luger on a public road alot of factors are out of control , you can cut the risk with a chase car, spotters , walkie talkies .
3) scarier than stand up , personally i dont thinks so .
4) i have as yet to try one , personally though as every body is riding i would go with a rogers or if you want a board for mostly recreation and since your more towred the east coast go with a subterfuge board .most of all though come to race when you get a chance, sit on every board you can , and ride what you think is comfortable to you .
5) street luge has got an incredible age range because any body can do it , i mean Dr.NO 's kid , is like some where between 7 or 10 , has been heard to have been going 60 plus on GMR . but the age range goes all the way up to the mid 50s , (how old is waldo autry?) .
6) i dont know any body know , check with the guys at subterfuge , they could probobly set you up with some races.

but i have some questions...??
1)Is this a sport i can enjoy on my own ?( i don't know anyone in ga. even thinking about a luge.)
2) would you say its more dangerous than moto-cross?? (I still race @ 38).
3) is it scarier than down hill skating?? (thats a rush but small margin for error.even 45 is spooky.i like it though.i got a dregs race board

the most commonly used trucks in luge are:
general pricing...

indy 215's: $23 ea.

z-roller luge trucks : $45 ea

randall luge trucks: $75 ea


you can use other trucks such as randall R-11 B's : wich i think are 25 each, or 27 i cant remember wich are buttboard trucks,but work on luges, can be a bit tipsy at times
