Hi luge guys.
I'm the proprietor of Monkeywrench Machine Works (MMW) an engineering / fabrication company specializing in skate stuff, primarily slalom and downhill truck mods, like 8mm axles, variable width hangers, carbon fiber race decks, and anything racers dream up for skateboards, motorcycles, karts, race cars...whatever.

Here's why I'm in the luge forum.

I just did our first multi-wheel conversion for a luge guy, and it's cool. I started with the customer's Randal 180 hanger, trimmed it to 158 so the centerline of the pairs of wheels would be where the centers of single wheels would be, fitted a true 8mm CrMo axle with 46mm of free length on each end, and machined 4140 bearing spacers and between-wheel spacers.

With 4 85mm Kryps on the thing it's perfectly straight, spins for days, and should have KRAZY traction, as well as excellent speed. I hope to have pics up on our website soon.

Cost will be $55 / hanger plus return freight.

Complete information is now available for the IGSA Swiss World Cup. (www.sk8championship.ch) The event promises to be bigger and better than ever in 2004. Check out the virtual course map to see possibly the finest and safest gravity sports track in the world. Straw bales are only required on two corners with the remainder of the course surrounded by grass with no obstacles. The organizers have arranged free shuttle service from the Zurich (ZRH) airport. They have also arranged a shuttle on Sunday that will take competitors to the IGSA World Championships in Germany for only 10 euros!

The Staton Team will be at the Signal Hill Reunion. Our team member Kevin Karnes placed 6th. Kryptonics was our sponsor and gave us the first set of wheels that were ever used in competition, they helped us move up from 17th place!

I have a plastic case to put my luge in nowadays, but before that I used a large cardboard box that was reinforced with tape and twine. Domestic flights have a lower weight limit than international flights (50lb. vs. 70lbs.). If your luge is a pegged model you may try to think of a way to modify it to make it shorter for travel. Some guys used to just bring a complete luge to the counter, however, it is probably more likely to get damaged or swiped. Also, check the size restrictions to see how big of a package you can transport.

Just wondering if anyone out there has ever travelled (flown specifically) with their luge to a race. If so, what do you use to carry / protect your luge during the trip? I have a bag for a surfboard which works, but it's awkward carrying the luge and it's just plain heavy to boot. I did some shopping around for other bags today, but the surfboard bags I've found are too short. So I'm hoping someone has an alternate suggestion that would work better. Any help would be most appreciated.

I've been street luging for about five years now and have built two luges. The first was plywood and the second was aluminum. I found an arc welder the other day at a garage sale, and I'm working on plans for a steel luge. I have a creeper (the thing mechanics lay on to get under cars), and was going to use that as the main body. On the front, I'll have the foot pegs and the bar going out to them be quick release (or just two bolts), so that I can fit the luge in the trunk of my car without putting down the back seats. From that starting point I have a few options.

1. I have a set of 12" trucks on my aluminum luge, and I could replace them with some 9" trucks and put the 12's on the steel luge.

2. I was thinking about welding the front fork of a small bmx to the back of the creeper frame and putting one of my foot wide trucks in the front. With this design, I could use the hand brake from the bike and wouldn't have to tear up my shoes so much. I also have a spedometer from an old bike that I could use on it. If I was scraping an old bike, I would also have nice handles and I could scrap the rest of the bike for steel. The disadvantage that I can see is that the rear wheel would turn like the rear trucks would, unless I had a really complicated design. I question the stability of three wheel luge and was wondering if anyone has tried something similar.

3. Another posibility that could be combined with option one or two, is to extend the trucks. I know that 12" is big, but with my welder i could customize them a bit and make 18" or 24" trucks. If I don't extend them, I might weld a piece of angle iron to the trucks to reinforce them. The trucks are independents made of cast iron, and its hard to weld on cast iron, so this idea might need some refining.

4. On the aluminum luge, I use 100mm wheels like the ones found on scooters. These have worked well for me so far, but I was wondering if there would be an advantage in using a more typical size longboard wheel.

My goal is to find something fast, stable, and cheap. I've only spent about $110 or so on the aluminum luge ($40 for trucks, $20 for wheels, $10 for abec-7 bearings, and $40 for aluminum) and I've ridden it around 30-40+ mph. For the steel luge, I want to be able to go 50+. The biggest downside to the steel luge that I can see is that it will weight two or three times as much as the aluminum luge. The aluminum weighs about 8 pounds, and I want to keep the steel luge under 20. I'm a big guy (6'4" 250lbs), so the most important criteria for it is that it won't break if I go over a bump. Let me know which plans look best. If no one has tried the three wheel luge idea yet, I might go ahead and do that just to do something new.

I have been asked to do an article on land luge but i will not appaer for four months or so. I need info, photos, and tales of adventure from youz guys. Probably none of you know this but I was a part of the very first luge culture of the 70's at Black Hill and Glendora Mt. Rd. so I'm not an outsider.

The material you build your luge out of is just a preference. Darren Lott builds all of his out of wood and they are just as fast as anything else out there. Wood is the cheapest and easiest to work with, Steel and aluminum tend to be more durable. I would choose what ever you have available to you, and have the means to work with. As far as wheelbase, have your first truck as close to your butt as possible with out your wheels being at risk of hitting the board. If your using double trucks up front. Space them so you have a little over 1/4 inch between the wheels of the first truck. You want roughly a 60%-40% weight distribution, with 60% of the weight on your front truck (or trucks). On my Pegless I believe the wheelbase from the inside front axle to the rear axle is under 45 inchs, Im not at home to measure right now. But when I compared to some Rogers Brothers pegless boards this was pretty close to their set up. When I get home Ill measure and post exactly. Experiment to what set up feels like it has the most control and traction to you.
