just a little story i thought you guys might like ... the other day i was skating home from school in the hottest part of the day (it's summer in Australia at the moment if you didn't know) and anyway i threw in a few slides but mostly just carvin ... and i got home and my wheels were all soft and gooey .... the road's heat combined with the friction from skating actually melted my wheels .... true story

Thats cool Dan, we're all levels of skating here.

Its a measure of hardness, the higher the number the harder the wheel.

I'm new to the boarding thing and I was wondering what the 78a part of 70mm/78a means?

Cherrys
On 2/15/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

Cherry Bombs,my favorite wheel, have a reputation among racers as being a little slippery at the limit (ask manu)they ride harder than their urithane because of the size and stiffness of their core. What type of speeds did they do at the g games?,cause it maybe that acceleration was more important than sheer mass,If any of the sharp corners was kind of flat then a real grippy smaller wheel that goes into the corner tighter and accellerates quicker into the straight could be an advantage, after all you may slow in the corner but,its not like you can push.

Biker's wheels at the Gravity Games

Danny,

I spoke to Biker and he told me that he was using "Labedas", not "Power Paws".

hey, er, what the hell does downhill blading vs. lugeing have to do with wheels? and the reason you think that way is that you've most likely never done eiter.

Cherry Bombs/Power Paws
On 2/15/2000 Danny wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

OK, which one is better? I have a set of cherries on my speedboard right now because I figured "if they work for the pros, they'll work for me" and they do work. I've had them for about a year(all I do is go fast downhill, no carving or sliding). I love them. But I've heard so much about these Power Paws, and it appeared to me that biker and alot of other racers in the gravity games used them(for stand-up). Now it also seems that if you use a softer, more grippy wheel, you lose acceleratoin and overall speed. But you might want a softer wheel that grips better for thighter turns and better lines. Has anyone used them both for speedboarding, or just going fast without carving? Can you tell me which one seems to be better for what? thanks

Bladers vs Lugers
On 2/13/2000 er wrote in from (209.208.nnn.nnn)

Last time X Games had bladers doing downhill, it was a helluva lot more exciting than the lugers. Though bladers crashed and burned, here and there, it didn't decide the fate of every race. The lugers, bit the dust in 98's black hole turn just about everytime. The results had less to do with strategy of racing and more to do with WWF. Ask Biker about his suspect "victory". Also the bladers seem to have alot more lead changes. Check out the winner Pat Naylor's come from last to ending up way ahead of the pack by the finish. Only standup downhill gives us that kind of strategy and thrills.

Sector 9 Nineballs 76mm 78a
On 2/12/2000 Hizzout wrote in from (63.70.nnn.nnn)

I snagged me a pair of Nineballs 76mm's today, and these wheels are rad! They're pretty grippy, I took them through the paces today and they held up nicely. They seem softer than my other 78a's though...hmm.

These are my 1st wheels to break the 70mm barrier, and overall I'm pretty pleased.

Just postin' my review...but I'm sure you all knew this already! :)

Keep Carvin'

hubbed wheels
On 2/11/2000 Nick wrote in from (169.199.nnn.nnn)

For cheap aluminum hubed wheels go to rainy day concepts. The wheels are only $27 compared to $70 for power paw aluminators. So if you want a alright pair of wheels buy these.

ALUMINATOR 74a's
On 2/11/2000 STUPENDOUS FUZZ wrote in from (193.62.nnn.nnn)

As promised, that review of the Aluminators...
In a couple of words...They go like shit off a shovel, and stick just as well...
Bombed a run of just over a mile, ultra smooth tarmac and about 6 metres wide in some places. The road undulates with a series of bends leading to steeper sections. Plant/foliage growth makes for interesting simulated barrel rides and at the moment a number of bolards have been placed at the last quarter mile (long not-too-steep gradient) providing a short slalom course - infact this is the reason why this 1 and a half mile section of road has been closed off - road-works.
Now to the wheels: They hold really well on deep carves (hand-down stuff), giving you confidence at speed. Speed is one factor though, as previous posts have suggested the 74 rubber compromises speed (not much) but gives you a nice smooth,'cushioned' ride. I liked the spongy/tacky feel to the rubber...Pumping the board through flatter sections was easy enough - the ALUMINATORS don't seem to lose too much inertia. Down sides included the 'rattle' from the provided spacers - I changed mine for a different set, the (small) loss of speed - made up for in the tackiness and smooth ride, and the loss of the nice pretty white urethane in the dust - I know, purely cosmetic, but I have to keep up my appearances don't I?
Good all round wheel, nice in giant slalom apps. (maybe a smaller diameter would be better). 78's probably better for downhill/bombing as HIZZOUT and others have said...I dunno...
BIG THUMBS UP FOR ALUMINATOR 74a's

Center set hubs

Look for these generic 72mm wheels. I think Labeda makes them. I have a set and I like them a lot.

center set hubs
On 2/10/2000 Drew wrote in from (169.233.nnn.nnn)

Labedas have a center set hub, but I can't reccomend them all that much, as I have had two sets that have tended to come appart.
Also, the Bones bombers tended to flatspot for me (I have both the 85a and the 95a in 68mm).

New Krypto
On 2/10/2000 Bob wrote in from (192.73.nnn.nnn)

I saw a new 76mm Krypto at the ASR show (new to me at least).

76mm, looked like 78a, with an exposed hub. The hub had holes in it -- supposed to cool the wheel and prevent the "krypto meltdown" problem.

Interesting.

SLIDING KRYPTOS...
On 2/10/2000 SUPERFUZZBOX wrote in from (193.62.nnn.nnn)

Yeah I slide my Kryptos ('K' 70mm Blue-82a's)...but if you read in the Misc Equipment board nailing them is a bit of a problem...especially at speed...I allways seem to damage my family jewels (or other extremely tender areas).
Sliding is one thing, controling them is another...

krypto wheels
On 2/9/2000 Nick wrote in from (24.4.nnn.nnn)

Has anyone coleman slided on a pair of kryptonic Classic "K" wheels. Because I'll get goin pretty good but I still don't get much of a slide at all. All I get is a little power slide. Please write some input on this matter of not sliding.

Aluminators
On 2/9/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

Hey! that 78a formula sounds alright to me,I have the 74a 's and while I see reasons for a grippy not quite so fast wheel for speed control on scary steep hills ,I don't need this type of thing very often ,I definitely like big wheels too, So what's up Rene? 80mm or bigger aluminators in 78a anytime soon?

aluminators
On 2/8/2000 rene wrote in from (216.101.nnn.nnn)

Hey guy's sorry about the mix up, the reason the whites say 78a is that we were not goig to make them in white 74a only in the red 78a, but ran some by accident and people luved them so we started to run them in both compounds. just so u know how we work white is always 74a and red will be 78a and so forth, making same colors but diff. duros is a pain so we will keep it simple...!

Thanx for riding them and enjoy!!!
