Inglewood Games 4…The saga.
Kilian Martin ripped! Recently transplanted from Spain to Los Angeles County he was eager to skate in his new country. This was only his second contest as a pro. Kilian looks and skates a lot like Pierre Andre. That’s a good thing. He manages not to be a clone or copyist but more of an impressionist. He arrived early in the day, around 10:00am and attracted onlookers and astonished kids all day long. The freestyle contest did not start until 3:00pm and that opened with the battle comps. The open men’s and women’s comp was even later, around 4:00pm.
Kilian was third to skate out of a field of 13. The first two skaters went first and second as they were also in the Shop Team Street comp and had to go as that comp was running at the same time. Kilian skated to his own music played on my newly acquired, from Craigslist, boom box. It was a little underpowered for the space but you could here it. All eyes were on Kilian as he floated through his routine. He was not flawless in his runs, probably from skating six hours prior to competing, but he is so good that it only mattered to the judges, the other competitors were spellbound.
I chose not to run a separate Pro division and then an Am division and then a Women’s division as there would have been only a few skaters in each division. Instead I ran the freestyle as a group it worked out great for the number of skaters entered and I split out the divisions later. Everyone had the same experience. Most of the competitors were not in to freestyle as their first choice but were in it for the swag and the overall championship points. They all got to feel what it was like to skate lines ( as they call it) for two minutes and see how it could be done on the highest level.
Brett Novak was probably the “real” freestyler in this comp that most of the others competitors could best relate to. He has an urban fast paced hard trick aggressive and fearless approach that is the hallmark of both street skaters and the new generation of freestylers. Brett has been a favotite skater of mine for several years, he just has a fresh solid style.
Ben Farquhar was something else! He opened his second run by doing pogo’s while juggling three balls. That got everyone’s attention, and he held that attention with solid skating and thereby creating that magical aura that connects the skater and the viewer in the moment. Ben produced the only perfect run of the day and as he was skating we were wondering when he would sketch or miss, it never happened and he got the biggest ovation of the comp. As I was announcing during his run and realizing he might pull of a flawless routine I mentioned how at Venice once upon a time Ben ran 50 + straight tricks without missing. Ben is dangerous; when he’s on it he can take out any am at any time.
Lamont Holt…well you can’t say enough about this 13 year old kid and his all around abilities. He won the overall men’s championship last year and his outstanding one run in the freestyle comp gave him the points to win the overall championship a second year in a row. Lamont is very much like Brett in energy and degree of difficulty but comes to freestyle from another direction, he totally understands that freestyle is about connecting the tricks into meaningful lines and he does it well. After we split out the scores and made Kilian, Ben and Brett 1-2-3 in the pro division that made Lamont 1st in the Men’s division.
Kristina Brown…well you can’t say enough about this 13 year old kid and her all around abilities. She won the overall women’s championship last year and her outstanding second run in the freestyle comp gave her the points to win the overall women’s championship a second year in a row. Kristina had an iffy first run probably do to having to get back over to the Shop Team comp. She came back strong, like Ben on his second run, patient, determined,

A Big Thanks to everyone who attended our jam in Huntington Beach on Sunday. The weather was bright and sunny with temps in the 80's -- perfect day to come out and skate! With the holiday season mode still lingering -- everyone was stoked to get together to kick off the new year and session for hours.
Great to see such awesome talent all together once again at one of the best freestyle spots of all time -- including SK8KINGS team riders Primo & Diane Desiderio, Keith Butterfield, Kirby Cox, Justin Collins, Marcus Rietema, Richy & brother Rene Carrasco -- and many guests -- like HB local Chris Chaput (his headstand on motorized skateboard was something to see!), our Burbank brother Darryl Grogan (busting cross-foot impossibles), Mike "looks like he's been practicing" Mullen, MSK, Ben Farquar and our new friend visiting from Japan -- to name just a few. Lots of family crews were on hand to support and have a good time. A special highlight of the afternoon was the arrival of Shant from Archie's Ice Cream -- bringing a cart load of cold goodies to cool off all the hot skaters and friends. Thanks Shant and Archie's!
It was a great day and a great way to start the new year. More pics and some video coming up. Keep an eye at SK8KINGS.COM for updates.
. . . and don't forget -- we're just getting started --next up is San Diego Sunday Jan 25 -- day after ASR for another jam. Join us if you can!
