snake run
On 12/13/2002 kanufi wrote in from (139.134.nnn.nnn)

Hey joseph i just got a flyer in the mail and its for an extreme park which caters for sk8-mountain bikes etc.And they reckon it has a snake run and slalom course. Its at San Remo on the central coast.Dont know too much about it but they have spent lots of money there to attract overseas riders. And i went up the old pacific hwy during the week and this is the place with runs from 3 - 4.5 kms long (full downhill playground. The guy we went there with is in the city so he agreed to give you a lift next time we go if you meet him in the cbd somewhere.

Yeah h0dad saw that street and wondered what the hell made them think they'd survive it. They musta been pretty cut. The word got around the globe pretty quick with the downhill set, and there was much subsequent discussion on NCDSA forums about it for sure.

Dunedin has the steepest street in the world according to the guiness book of lies and exxacerations (sp?)
a few years back a drunken couple dragged a wheelie bin to the top, both of them squeezed in for a laugh, and pushed off. they died....

I am trying to track down a Peter Boronski Trax model for Peter, he doesn't have one, and I would like him to have one, I would pay handsomely if one exists and the owner is prepared to part with it, if there is one floating around out their, in almost any condition, get in touch.
Thanks,

TV in Japan
On 11/1/2002 Mad Hack wrote in from (202.95.nnn.nnn)

JG,
I've been waiting for espn to show something: maybe one of the other cable stations that show all the other "X" stuff. Nothing, really.

There was one show about two months ago about an old surf shop somewhere near Tokyo. The most interesting thing about it for me was the seventies slalom footage, and other downhill skateboarding stuff. There was a web address for the programme, but when I checked it it was just details about the airing time etc., when what I really wanted was information about the shop, and who was involved. If anybody else saw that, or knows anything about it, it'd be cool to hear about it.

Other than that I have a number of a shop in Tokyo that I'm going to follow up on--he's mildly interested in venturing into longboards, but slalom? He doesn't know. Everybody else I've met is just a bit too young to remember what skateboarding was.

The addresses you gave me (that I did write to without any real interest back) dried up. There is the AJSA--maybe you'll have better luck with them than I did. I tried to get a fire lit at Skull Skates Japan--I think Gareth may have tried with PD's in Vancouver, too--(and now that they have a Slalom board out things may change) but that never panned out. They do have spacers now, though, I heard back recently, so maybe something's brewing there.

I think throwing a slalom race hear might get something going if you could get coverage (a little bit of TV goes a long way here), the right people involved, and some major heavy hitters involved. Getting here is expensive, getting around is expensive, blah, blah, blah. If the major sports chains started carrying some gear (Sports Authority, Powers) that would do loads. They carry longboards, shortboards, and all terrain boards every summer (switch to snowboards and skiis in the winter).

It is really just a matter of turning the right key and all the barriers will crumble. All the major dealers of other skateboard equipment are here and there is a version of TWS for Japan (lame as it may be) so the channels are there.

Anyway, that's what I know. I'm sure people would love to see a demo (it's just a matter of where and who's sponsoring running it/ there are downhill races here, or so I've read, and a lot of vertical and street competitions) and maybe a travelling salvation show of old guys with attitude just might do the trick.

I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Scott

Skateboarding in Japan
On 10/31/2002 John Gilmour wrote in from (151.203.nnn.nnn)

Anyone watching any Television in Japan? I think it is about time they had a segment with someone doing a bit of longboard and slalom skateboarding.

What shows would feature this?

Can anyone email me the email addresses of a producer?

And I am not just talking about a show which regularly features skateboarding... I also mean shows that might feature new sports like Kiteboarding, Powerskiing, Ultralight aircraft etc....

I'll fly over there and do a demo.
