Anyone know if there are bearings other than ball in the 608 size?Would something like a tapered-roller type be better for less friction when carving? Any thoughts on a hybrid ceramic-roller(ball-type)using half ceramic balls and half steel?

A little advice-
As being an experienced racer I have learned some bearing tricks:
1. Don't grease or lube your bearings if you are going to be in pretty much dry conditions.
2. Get some carbeurator cleaner from your local Auto parts store or Wal-Mart
3. "Shoot the Sh!t" out of the bearings with the carbeurator cleaner, and it will evaporate and leave your bearings clean!
4. With a soft tip on your Dremel(tm) (or other rotary tool, and some old wheels spin those bearings to your hearts desire, while adding a little Ronsonol lighter fluid to keep them flushing EVERYthing out. The lighter fluid will evaporate too!
5. Wipe off your bearings and put them in your favorite wheels and you will feel a huge difference
Definetly worth the work!!! We used this techniquie on my soapbox derby car bearings and I won the World Championships in 1998. Yeah.

Rollerskate spacers

Addending to that:
I bought a set of rollerskate spacers, and we (guy working there and me) noticed the regular skateboard spacers (made be Shorty's, he said) didn't fit on my trucks (Invaders, made by Sure-Grip, a rollerskate company), while the rollerskate spacers fit with ease.
This seems to be exactly opposite to your experiences, so maybe there's more to it... Anyone?
PS I don't remember exactly, but I think he tried the Shorty's on another truck as well and they didn't fit on that one either.

An addenda to Ali's post;Beware of 7MM (inside diameter) spacers.It seems that while rollerskates are from the same evolutionary tree,somewhere down the line,7MM axles became a standard for skates,while skateboards have used 8MM axles for thirty+ years.The width for the spacer on most Krypto/Hyper/Gravity vented core wheels is 8MM.

A lot of wheels (like the Gravity Super G's for instance) are based on a rollerskate hub rather than a skateboard hub.
So, you need rollerskate spacers. There's no need for machining them, just go to a *GOOD* store that sells rollerskates, not just any toystore, but one where people know what they're talking about. They'll have spacers for rollerskate wheels, they're cheap and they're exactly what you need.
I don't know whether Solidskate or Longskate have them, they should, though.

These wheels use smaller spacers than 10mm, something like 7 or 8 mm. Get the correct sized spacers.

If you can machine them do it,I have an ajustable end stop in my lathe spindle so,pieces clamped will all be in the same place,therefore come out equal length.Leave the spacers just a little long(+.020)of the actual bearing spacing.

If I use the spacers that come with my swiss bones on both my Super G's and Sector9 76mm, the bearing sticks out on the inside of each wheel by about 1mm. Should I take them out/ machine the spacers / leave them alone? What effect would this have on my speed and stability, especially at high speeds?

Enchanting,it sounds like your shield(s) got dented.Look closely at the fit of the inner sleeve and the shield for deformities.If it's bad,then there is likely dirt in there too.In the mean time,don't push those bearings into a high R.P.M.,long duration run (or else Ka-Pow,bearing parts on road).

I'm getting a ticking sound coming from one of my wheels (I don't even have to be riding - I can just turn the wheel in my hand and it will "tick"). I've tried taking the wheel out and reinstalling everything, but its still there. Anyone know what this is? I have a funny feeling it may have something to do with me bearings... hmm.

Smooth and pretty fast though its been a couple of days since the last ride so my judgement may be a little off,carving into sunset always seems to be fast,kind of hard to judge in fading light/darkness,they need proper spacers or else they have more play/shake than regular bearings.

Well i got them in,adapted to 5/16 axles and everything,of course its pouring rain,they seem smooth,with light grease,I'm not gonna bother soaking them and oiling with triflon,I'll just try to keep them clean during their slightly longer break in period ,then we'll see. Car paced run on sibbald.Two reg. bearings a spacer and a speed ring weigh 27 grams Ceramic swiss 24 grams,6900's 22 grams,Mini mizers weigh 14 grams but need spacers 2mm longer than regular so they'll probabely come in at 16 or 17 grams altogether ,and they are weaker. All this means nothing unless you're racing,or just really into tech stuff,we'll see about the speed.

I have a buddy who is a car repair genius. (he is also several
other types of genius as well) Sometimes he gets in my car and
says something like.... man your brake rotors are warped... or
your car seems sluggish. These are things that I can't really
notice by virtue of the fact that I drive the stinking thing
every day. My point being..... one cannot tell if their bearings
are slower than when they first got them just by the way
that they "feel".... unless of course they are badly damaged.
When the bearings in the left front wheel (of my car) went... I sure as hell could
tell.

I ride nachis and I ride in the rain a bit. The bearings I have on my board have been on there for atleast 12 months and I don't think that there has been any noticible change in speed. I don't lube them either. In my opinion older bearings work better and I wouldn't waste my money on anything more than and abec 3, because after a week or two of riding all benifits of higher precision bearing are gone anyway.
I have a friend who swears by axel grease for his bearings. that should be thick enough to stay in there when the rain comes. your wheel might not spin as fast when you test it with your hand, but as soon as you are on the board there isn't any difference.

I would get the Ninja ABEC 5, their a good value and are almost exactly like the 7's to me. FKD and Bones have a larger gap between the shield and the inner ring, so they seem to get dirtier faster. You cannot see "daylight" when you look through the shield of a ninja, its a tight seal yet it spins freely in your hand.

YES, i just got in from a ride in the rain, the sun was shineing on the 30min walk upp, but on the way down....SHIT it got slipery before i got home again,
I have not lubed my bearings for over one year, and they still run smoth, the are Nachi RS2 bearings and i got them from www.nomo.se

im having problems opening up my bearings. i dont think im suppose to do this. but i think there sand inside of them. i have some harry balls. they came with my flexdex. and im not sure if im suppose to replace them...or just clean them out...what do you guys think?
