Woot got to skate the Bellingham Washington skatepark for 2 hours completely alone, on the new Gravity Dimaond Tail 37" my wife gave me. So sweet to get to try a new board in a new (to me) park...
Park has a bit too much open space but its still pretty fun. Bellingham has a lot of sweet downhill runs, too. My stay here has been unexpectly fun, for a visit to the inlaws. Next time I want to check out the nearby Orcas Island Park

HC, I've sent an e-mail to the City Council to try and validate what you heard. I suspect that it is not true and only some lame City workers that has to clean the park that may have said something to someone and..... then the rumor got started. I'll post what ever I find out from the City ASAP.

That would be a true shame if Palo Alto shut down something like Greer Park! Greer has got to be one of the best flowing parks to come along in forever. Long live Greer Park(!)and I suggest the skaters there do something to keep the park like maybe tear down city hall or something?

Just skated Greer last Sunday. A bmx guy told me the city was thinking about closing it due to vandalism (some kids started a fire in the deep bowl clogging the drain) and low useage.
He was trying to get people to go there this month to show the city that there is support for the park.

Hey, AVOID THIS PARK. lots and lots of bmx-icans in the bowls(although it's posted that bicycles are NOT ALLOWED!) the park has a small footprint and although it has been open maybe a week, it has already become a day care center for the community of Elk Grove.(the minimum age without parental supevision is posted as 14 years old, plenty of under 14 years old kids out there today, and not a single parent to be seen anywhere) AVOID THIS PARK.(unless you can make it there on a school day in the a.m.) chris olden

Hey everyone in the North Bay, good news about the park: A direct quote from the last email Wormhoudt sent me,
" That is perfect. I definitely have an idea of what you like. I will review all the images and your comments and change the Sebastopol design accordingly."
How's that for good news?? It took me almost a week to dig through all the zillions of photos I have, but I found every example I had photographic proof of for good rails/ bad rails--Good ledges/bad ledges--good bowls and pools, and every other type of skate obstacle I could think of, even picnic tables, and sent them to him. So it was worth the effort. I'm really glad he's willing to listen.
Pat--The reason I got in late on the design process is because I called the lady who was in charge of the skatepark commmitee several times when this whole project started about 3 years ago trying to help and get involved and she never called me back. So I quit trying and hoped for the best cause at that point the city didn't even want a skatepark. A couple had donated a HUGE amount of money towards the park, but the city kept putting it off until the donation whittled down to almost nothing. So I completely gave up.
As soon as I heard things were up and running again, I tried to get involved. Because I'm so busy and travel so much, it's really hard for me to stay on top of everything. I shouldn't have given up on this park in the first place, so it's my bad. My only hope is that it all turns out OK in the end. My next step is to contact the dude in charge of the hours and safety equipment requirements and see what's up with that.

Peter, yes... that pool is in So Cal. My boss turned me on to it. After a break in some of the rain we got, I finally got to bail it out and skate it. Probably the second best (read: user-friendly) pool I've ever skated. Reminds me a lot of the first pool I got in '77. The waterfall is kinda steep, but if you plan out your line on the side walls, you can avoid coming back down where it kinks at the waterfall. Not a bad pool for an 8.5' depth. VERY fun shallow end, too. Sadly, it's going bye-bye very soon.

Cheap land for skateparks

Sasha,
Sounds like you have lots of concerns about the park design, construction, and location. Since you are entering the dialog late in the schedule, you're going to have to pick your fights, you can't get everything you want.
I suggest that you concentrate on influencing the design and construction. The location is probably fixed and immovable at this time. It takes YEARS sometimes to locate property.
Here in Portland/Beaverton Oregon, they build most of the parks AND SCHOOLS on cheap land underneath powerlines, where nobody would like to put a business or a home. We have so many soccer fields named "powerline park", that you'll find lost mini-vans full of kids every saturday morning going to the wrong park for the soccer games. So I guess I'm trying to say to be thankful that they allocated any land at all to this park -- AND -- you're probably getting land as good as other parks/sports are getting.
I understand your frustration, but I hope your interactions with the parks department are a little more positive than your post here. You'll catch more flies with sugar than vinegar.
Hope to see you next season at another Cascade Slalom race.
-- Pat

Sasha, as you know if you really wanted something you'd find a way to get it done. The fact is that wormy and the city don't skate. So, they don't realize our passion. For example. Many skateparks build up, because they can't go too deep. Look at some of the photos of Aumsville, OR and you'll notice that the whole thing is apart of a grassy mound. Fact is, it was all built above ground, and dirt was brought in around it, and grass was planted. It works. That is if you really wanted to do it. Anything can be built if you really wanted to build it. Keep up the fight.

Even more Sebastopol news:

Well he wrote back again explaining the limitations of the site hence the design restrictions. Typical BS from the city. Always trying to put parks on land no one else wants. Examples: Folsom, Fresno, Healdsburg, Renton in Washington, Bezerkely, the list goes on. Reject property that is toxic or near or under power lines.
Ok, back to the task at hand....sewage lines run under the property (but of course!!!) the lot is long and narrow. Fill to the north limits building there, it's on a flood plain, you name it this property sucks. People originally wanted it to be at Ragle Ranch park which I thought was a great location, but the prima donnas that live nearby think all skaters are the spawn of satan and a skatepark would devalue their property so much, it just couldn't possibly be placed there. How retarded. A lot of pro skaters make more than the dumb neighbors and the city officials put together as we all know. I would like to see for once a piece of land in California that is just plan land with no BS problems so the design wouldn't have to be restricted. People just suck!!!
Ok, I feel better now, anyway, he's still open to suggestions and told me to fax him suggestions. So I guess I'll try to find time tomorrow to do so, but it looks like anything deeper would have to make the plans like Santa Cruz which is being built above ground due to the high water table. I'll try to think of something though. Any suggestions???
