Mike if you want turnier trucks and riding Independents on your board now, I think you will be very disapointed if you switch over to Tracker's. Get some 169 Indy's.
Awhile back I was on my soap box and was just not happy with the direction Indy was heading with the cheap king pins that I break like tooth picks,T-shirts in half the mall stores, etc and decided that I would give Tracker a try. Wow what a difference in the way the 2 ride absolutely no comparison. I guess if you have rode trackers all your life you would be ok. Put a wedged riser up front to make it turnier what ever you ride.

Trackers vs Indies vs ??
On 2/15/2005 Mike wrote in from United States  (67.124.nnn.nnn)

I'm trying to find a better truck for my poolboard (vision gator rogowski model). I have 149 indys on it with 65mm 97a wheels and half inch risers. I was thinking of getting some sixtracks to make it a bit wider, change the geometry (to make it more turny), and hopefully allow me to use a smaller riser (a soft 1/8 hopefully) since the truck won't move towards the deck as much with the turnier geometry. Also, I've heard that turnier trucks will help me to concave better without using my kicktail as I do now. Will the sixtracks do all of these things? The deck is about 9" wide, what width trucks do you recommend? also, what kind of bushings do you guys like? Information on truck geometry (actual angles to compare) is so hard to come by. I've heard that trackers are less turny, more stable than indies, some other people told me the opposite. Thanks a ton for the help.

Skaters wanted for profiles
On 2/10/2005 Sasha wrote in from United States  (4.243.nnn.nnn)

Hey all,

I'm looking for skaters who've led an interesting life on board that might be interested in getting a little media coverage. I'm currently writing for several magazines and websites and am always looking to promote those "lesser known" rippers. High profile types are welcome also.

I have primarily focused on female athletes up to this point but have recently had the time to start pro-moing the guys as well. Gary Holl was the first, surfer Matt Beacham is next, anyone else interested ? This will mostly done by email and phone unless you live somewhere in the bay area or I run into you at an event.

If interested, please email me at: info@sashalarochelle.com

Thanx

No way! Those guys are crooks! You can totally build one of those with REAL wood in your garage for a hell of a lot less than that. I have a small one car garage and I built two 1/4 pipe ramps 3 feet high 6 feet wide for about $60 using stuff from Home Depot. Don't even go out like that. Check the SLAP magazine site for ramp plans for free.

Crappy Half Pipe
On 2/5/2005 Rob in NH wrote in from United States  (138.162.nnn.nnn)

Thanks for all of the feedback! I am forunate to have some nice parks nearby. I live just outside of Manchester NH and there is a great concrete park in Nashua, a nice new park in Windham, lots of little mcparks. Getting ready to move to Newport RI this summer and it looks like they don't have much, particularly since Skater Island, an awesome indoor park, recently closed...
Thought an inexpensive halfpipe in the backyard would be nice. If I can find a local builder, as suggested, I might go that route.
Thanks again!
Rob

Ebay half pipe
On 2/3/2005 CM wrote in from United States  (216.243.nnn.nnn)

I have a ramp similar to that in my garage. Mine is wider (about 14') and has a 6.5 foor radius tranny, so at that 3.25', it is at 45 degrees. I have 8' of flat bottom and the Ebay ramp looks about the same. It really looks looks very similar. Same platforms too, like 3' or so. Small ramps like that are actually really fun and great for beginners. We have a blast on ours. It's no substitute for a real skatepark, but being indoors, on snowy days it's perfect. That being said, If I had a bigger garage, I would absolutely, positively have a bigger ramp. In other words, if it's all you have to skate, I guess you skate it.

The Ebay ramp is too narrow for sure. Mine started at 10' wide, and at 14' it is much better. 8' wide probably just wouldn't cut it. Here's the thing though. For the $2200 + shipping they want, you could build a kickass mini, and probably have enough left over to build a roof over it. Or maybe even a mini with a spine and no roof. Here's another thing. At only 400 lbs, how much flex is there in it? Is it going to feel solid? Has someone finally eclipsed SkateWave as the crappiest ramp/park company in the world? I think maybe.

Green Skate Laboratory in DC needs $$$$!
On 1/27/2005 knucklehead wrote in from United States  (68.232.nnn.nnn)

The Green Skate Laboratory (GSL) need some cash fast. DC Parks and Rec has extended our deadline to finish construction till April 22. We need to have the project completed or at least in concrete by then. If you haven't heard about the project, it is a free use concrete bowl that is being build in DC. Problem is our money that was to be used for construction supplies was stolen by the DC School System!

We need to raise a minimum of $14k. Hey if 14,000 people each give a dollar, we can finish this project!

You can download and view our PDF about the project at
www.johnbracken.com/GSLflyer.pdf

We have a paypal account too. The paypal addy is donate@greenskatelab.org

Our address for snail mail check donation is

Checks can be made payable to East Coast Round Wall Foundation or ECRW Foundation

Thanks for your support!

New Louisville Park (CO)
On 1/16/2005 Mile High Mark wrote in from United States  (206.124.nnn.nnn)

I stopped by the site of the new Louisville skatepark today, and it's essentially complete. Approx 10,000 square feet, with a small snake-type run, kidney bowl/pool, and street area. Finish and cement work looks really good. No pool coping, but you can't have everything. Official opening is Feb 5th, which means we could have have snow, sub-freezing temps, or sunshine and the 50's (don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes). I'll post some pics when I can remember to bring the camera. Visting skaters could easily check it out, as it's between the Denver and Boulder parks.

ECRW Needs Help with Letter/E-mail Campaign for Phase 2 of Wakefield Skatepark (Fairfax Cnty, VA)
On 1/6/2005 lbk wrote in from United States  (69.143.nnn.nnn)

ECRW founder Jaime Stapula is asking that we assist with a letter/e-mail writing campaign to help Fairfax County live up to their promises for the second phase of the Wakefield Skatepark.

East Coast Round Wall (ECRW) is a soon to be established non-profit entity that will be dedicated to the promotion of skateboarding with an emphasis on pools, bowls, and vertical ramps.

Copy and adjust the letter as needed then send it to the county officials.

***************************************** ****
(don't forget to put in your name where it says <<>>) and send it to the two people below.

*********************************************

Charles Bittenbring
Director, Park Services Division
Charles.Bittenbring@fairfaxcounty.gov
703-324-8585

Michael Kane, Director
Fairfax County Park Authority
12055 Government Center Parkway
Fairfax, VA 22035
parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov

This letter is in regards to the next phase of development at the Wakefield skatepark. As I understand it, the second phase of development will not take place. Instead, additional (smaller) "street" style parks will be constructed. I am writing this letter to let you know that, as a Fairfax county resident, I am in opposition to this type of development.

The original plan for Wakefield skatepark called for a vert ramp and a bowl and by overlooking these items, you are overlooking my needs as a skateboarder. As a seasoned skateboarder, the current facility you have built does not offer much to me. Please do not get me wrong, the park is well built and is usable for the beginner population, but it sorely lacks the variety and challenge (i.e., a vert ramp and a bowl) needed for the more advanced skaters such as my self.

Also, by not including these features (the vert ramp and the bowl) and opting to build another street section, you are excluding a large population of skaters who do not enjoy "street" skating at all. This is comparable to skiers who enjoy cross country skiing, versus skiers who enjoy down hill skiing. You would not build a cross country course and then go on to build a more advanced cross country course and then consider this to be appropriate for every skier.

Further more, I also want you to realize that this skatepark is for ALL of the residents of Fairfax county (and the extended counties of Viriginia), and not just for the school aged children of this state. By continuing down the path of only building (smaller) "street" style parks, you are excluding many of the adult skateboarders who wish to use this public facility.

In closing, I am requesting that you proceed with the original plan to build the vert ramp and the bowl so that myself, and the population of skaters that you have overlooked, will also have a place to skateboard.

Regards,
<<>>

RIP Vans- Potomac Mills12/31/04/Lansdowne 1/1/05
On 1/3/2005 John Dillon, Team Fun wrote in from United States  (151.200.nnn.nnn)

Vans' last session was a session that will go down in history. That place was as packed as the opening day celebration back in 2000. It was so noisy in there from all the wheels a-spinning,board a-slapping, and people a-cheering that I grabbed a bullhorn and did the 55-minute countdown....as I made the call for some vocal grinds, Jaime Stapla stepped up and started to kill it w/wreckless abandon, lapping over countless grinds on the hip in the big bowl and grinding louder than the music over the loudspeakers. The energy in the bowl overflowed as The Old Man Clan, Bulldogsters and ECRWsters and roundwallers galore from everywhere went one after another to bid this bowl farewell...at times there were some close calls as 2, 3 even 4 people at once dropped in....september 10 flashed before my eyes...fortunately, nobody got a ride to the hospital...evrybody was blazing.....JonBulldog with his killer lines,Psycho, w/his 2-board transfers & one-foot airs, Chaney and his tuck-knee f-side tight carves,Little Neil and his f-side airs,Corey & his Miller-flips, Erica, with her speed-demon lines were just the tip of the iceberg of the amount of fun that was displayed by all. The energy was so intense that the street skaters stopped skating and surrounded the bowl to check out history in the making.I counted about 150 people surrounding the bowl inside the park...the people outside the fence were as thick and deep as the pinball machines. I had the best time! We will all miss Vans...but we won't miss the mall security....who, by the way have hired OsamaBinLaden as the head of security...and he even called the whole Prince William County Police Force to come out and remove everyone from the park at closing, even though there was no reason to do so....I walked past 2 paddy wagons and 7 patrol cars when I exited....I was wondering if shoppers had rioted nearby....now, there is no reason to go to Potomac Mills Mall anymore....and I have started a boycott after the head security officer there used totally filthy language to kids and adults alike to herd everyone out of the place at closing. So as one skatepark closes another one opens on New Year's day...well, actually, last year it was closed on New Year's and this year Lansdowne was open, which was great. Temps were in the upper 60s....I worked on my tan as it was shorts weather....Taz even showed up on his new Bulldog 8-wheeler, which was unique on which to ride. Peace!

The last session from 4-6 pm was a blast. The kidney pool was the place to be. John Dillon even grabbed a bull horn and "m-c'd" as only John can do.

Oh and if you don't have too bad of a hang-over, Lansdowne will be open from 11:30 am to 5 pm for a New Year skate. John said he will be there carving it up in the spring like weather conditions. I'll be up at my local ski hill (Whitetail) for a few hours of surfing the slopes with my brother Stephen starting about 9 am.

Peace to All,

Word on the streets is that Van's Novi will be taken over by the big Michigan shop, Modern Skate and Surf. Modern run's a very similar park across the state in Grand Rapids. In my opinion a better run operation. Not as stiff as Van's.
So we are keeping our fingers crossed that this isn't just a rumor.
