Bear banked slalom course

Alright, I went and ran the official slalom course at Bear today with TimeShip, and I have the nitty gritty to share. The entire course is only six cones long. After riding it on several wheelbase and truck combinations, I have come to realize what Joe said long ago: This is a FAST ditch. The cones aren't close or hard to cut, there's no real slalom to this at all in the strict competitive sense. The cones are there more to tell you where the transition is best and most pumpable, and they guide you to the fastest run available. By the end of the session, I was making my best times on a Dregs race board with Randal DH trucks and Cherry Bombs. This course is basically a downhill speed course in a ditch. To be honest, if you rode an actual slalom board in this race, we would have to cart you off after the second transition. I've thrown up some pics and vids of today's session on my website: ABQ DITCHES Check the bottom 8 links under the Bear. There's already a ton of new footage, and a major renovation is in the works to make the site 10 times what it is now. I just had to throw these up ASAP to give you guys an idea of what we New Mexicans mean when we say banked ditch slalom. See ya on the Equinox!

Kenter and Brentwood had major surgury done to them. Revere is in lockdown mode but may be cool to skate when the heat is off, Bellagio is messed up, I don't know what's up at Mar Vista. Other classic schools banks were my home banks of Miller and Muir. Miller's banks were torn down and a 2 story playground was built in it's place. Muir's have been rendered unrideable, even on 70mm 78A wheels, by lack of care to the asphalt.
R.I.P. to all the good banks.

my friend Dan has been sk8ing there and working on restoring it alittle. It has some new parking blocks and a sheet of plywood roll in. Anyone that knows the place, knows its rich history. Arbution definately holds a place in alot of us Marylanders hearts.. So be sure to stop by and get a couple shots of this ditch if your ever on 95 going through Baltimore. It is ridable and it has lights for night. Scary cracks but not too bad. It is like sk8ing a halfpipe no long lines, but fun grinds...If you need directions hit up my email....

Hi, I'm a newbie to the longboard scene. Just got a 48" deck which I set up with Power Paw 74A wheels and some old Thunder trucks. Anyway, I was watching the Dogtown and Z Boys DVD and loved those schools. I plan on making a trip down there to skate them sometime. But for right now. Is there any Nor Cal schools with banks like that? directions and photos would be most welcome. Any other new longboarders like me want to meet up and skate somewhere?

Yes, K-Lee & SS those ditches look like fun, similar to those I sk8d in the Colorado Springs area in the 80s. I would like to make it out there to sk8 w/you in sept. Keep in touch!

I escaped from this state in 82, and was sucked back in a decade later. Love it or hate it, y'gotta love it. Can't wait till the Equinox, when downhill and ditches will rule the weekend.

K-LEE,
Man those pics of the ditches are inspiring! New buisness has me tapped or I`d be there eager to carve those faces of concrete nirvana. I need a break from the warm tropical breezes of S. FL. and could lose myself in a field of peyoT buttons easily.
As hOdad would say...."Scabs would much enjoy a long cruise to nowhere amongst the tranquility of the unliving."
Not that there`s no life in the dessert but compared to the moist environs of where I live, where it`s green everywhere and crawling with all kinds of nasties...sum o dem 2 legged. The solitude of the dessert sounds equaliberating right about now :-)

Count on it..h0dads got a bit of a fetish for deserts.
PS. Tourists in h0dads parts get intoxicated by the old country charm, which allows them to overlook the broken beer stubbies and piss stains on the pavement, hehe.

Yeah, lowrie's right, NM rocks! I just need a new flavor, that's all. 25 years of green chilie, and I'm itchin' for that sweet ocean breeze. Take that previous negativity with a grain of salt from a cynical local. Everyone should check out ABQ some time, especially on a longboard!

NM rocks, especially abq, los altos is good, the ditches are deadly fun, where else can you go 3 to 5 miles with out taking one push, anytime o day, without worrying about cars people or anything. The only thing you have to look out for are other drainage holes, and bricks under the bridge. long boards rock!!!

h0dad, Try living here for a couple of years, you might change your mind. I'm a native and I didn't even blink at you calling it a wasteland. Better than the term I use: craphole. The ditches are great, but it's about the ONLY thing ABQ has going for it, at least for a young single guy like me. Besides, we have a really high per-capita for substance abuse, so you could call it a wasted-land.

Does anyone know of any smooth ditches in southern Germany? I'm in the Frankfurt, Mannheim, Heidelburg and Karlsruhe vicinity. I think I remember a picture of Claus Grabke riding a ditch in an old Transworld if I'm not mistaken. Thanks.

h0dads gotta say, these pics of ditches are the soulfulest skate pic scenery he's ever seen, more so to him than any of hills. The stark clean empty concrete, desert wasteland for miles around, hot sun, what a post apocolyptic playground. Next time h0dad's in the states, he's going to see if he can find some of this action. The Bear shot is on his desktop now, stokin.

Funny typo, there should be "see" in front of "CP". When typing, the one C became both c's. I read it out loud and laughed a bit.

Yeah, I still CP around all the time, mostly at the Los Altos skatepark. He moves back and forth to Phoenix a lot, but he's in ABQ right now. I've been told he's not competing in the ditch race, but I bet he'll at least show up to watch.
