Just out of curiosity, which Avila's are you guys talking about? The white, grey or red ones? And what's the slowest speed, approximately, you're going when you do experience this?
I don't have the reds and haven't experience any slippage on the whites or greys ( keep in mind I'm NOT going as fast as you are either so..)...
thanks :-)

It's funny you mentioned running different size wheels front and back. At GA last week, I ran just that set-up: Avilas in front(heavily shaved-like c-62 width!!) and Avalons rear(trimmed only a little-but with sharp edges).
The combo worked great. It allowed the speed to increase significantly, but I had rear slide controll.

I was just reading that last post and I think it's really late and I need to crash. What I meant was put in some time on them on a board you know. Ride them a bit, then put on your Avalons. Ride them a little more next time and then put your Avalons back on....and so on until you're riding them all the time on your GS board. You'll be glad you did. In GS courses that are more technical, what might be a cross between GS and Hybrid, like the course on the second day at Breck....I used the Avalon rear and Avila front tactic to keep my speed up and keep my agility up as well.
Cleared up now? I'm off to hit the hay. Tonite is my Friday....woohoo!

Hey George...I've been riding Avilas all around on my GS board for a while now. It took me a while to get used to the feel they have. It's way different than an Avalon. Which is of course way different than a HyperStrata or C62.
Early on with Avilas, I had a hard time keeping them under me. I would fight and fight and loose the rear end. When I first got them I was riding 80s around and couldn't seem to make them stick. For Paso, I got a full set of 76s and they worked great. Granted, as Miko said, there weren't really any abrupt direction changes in that entire course so the bigger wheels helped maintain speed. After that race, I went back to Avalons. I just couldn't make the bigger wheels work. But hold on a sec.......remember when Avalons first came out? Didn't you have trouble skating those wheels? I know I did. But I stayed on them and figured them out. I figured how to push them and where to push them and how to keep them on the road.
These days, I still ride Avilas around on my GS board. I ride 76s in the rear, unmodified. I ride 80s in the front ground down to the width of an Avalon with an edge added for some extra traction (thanks again Steve Evans). I rode that setup at the last WLAC I attended and won the GS. I guess it worked!!!
My point in all this drivel is this......put some time in on the wheels. Start off free skating hills to find the turns you make on them. Find the places you feel comfortable and uncomfortable. Make those areas meet. I hope that makes sense.
Hope this helps

Oh yeah. For Paso Avilas all around was a pretty good combo cause there weren't any truly high freq spacings. The top was a straight "stinger" of maybe 7' spacings, then everything else was wide open. So using the biggest rollers worked great. Can't wait to get back on that hill! You're going to love it.

Hi George.
I too was having trouble controlling the rear end with Avilas on very fast hills with higer freq cone offset spacing. I had a couple crashes trying to fast-pump the Avilas on a couple big hills, and found this setup to be really perfect. I'm hoping to try the Gumballs to see how they stack up for the big stuff as well.
At the S.F. Gravity Fest, Richy was running Avalons on the rear, Avilas front, and Mike, myself, and Clayton quickly adopted that setup to see how it worked. I think PD did it as well.
Anyway, the combo allowed for faster board reaction at the top where you needed it, and quieted the rear end down at high speed.
I get the impression that the hill speed and grade was similar to Loretta. Who knows about course comparisons.
A few riders really hated S.F. because the top was flatter, and you had to have loose enough trucks to manage that section, then it threw you down a very fast and steep hill where you really wanted to tighten up. Stability was a real concern. The small rear, big front setup let you run tighter trucks and still get a pump.
Of course I thought S.F. rocked cause I won the open, although Richy Delasoda came along and almost got me at the end. 8-)
Pro winners were Richy, Mike, Olson, Dunn, Hackett. Not sure what Olson was running, and I think Hackett had Avilas all around.

Mike, I am making a transition to Avilas. I felt I could use the speed on some courses and of couse for Paso. I thought if I had them at WLAC I could have used a little more umph! I could not have controlled them at Loretta st. I could probably use them for Elsinore like courses. I know I gotta go to bigger risers, I found that out today. luckily it was a good fall with no damage done. these wheels are fast! they grip well. and they are tough to turn at least for me. any thoughts?

Hey Gary and John, sounds good to me. I'll ask for the time off from work. Good point Gary...and here's an interesting statistic...3 days of working at Mike's Bikes and I've sold 3 bikes! Also, with every day my total increase. As a matter of fact, I broke $1k for total sales today! Not too bad for the rookie.

JK, nope...I'm not running anything between now and the Morro races.
I was thinking more of a dual set up without the timer....it will work just fine...you challenge someone and then take a run...you'll know if you won and if you skated clean. I just don't want to monitor any time...besides we only use it for qualifying for the most part.
I say we do it.

Hey Gary,
Great idea. Why not have the 2nd Northern California Golden Gate Park Conservatory Drive Midtown Worldchampionships on Sept. 14th at GGP. Charge $10 bucks and keep it real... hmmm.... just a thought.

Mike, cool.... now you have a job where you are working on/selling something your passionate about....that's good.
I was thinking since many of us are not up for Tahoe since it came up with little or no advanced notice that we could perhpas get a little dual practice at GGP that weekend. So how about it? are you off on Sundays? Sept 14?

Yeah man, I had to take what I could get. It's nowhere near what I really need to survive, but it's fun and a great group of people to work with. I also need to find a replacement for my stolen mountain bike and hopefully being in the environment will afford me the opportunity to find a good bike at a price I can handle. I'll be at the Worlds but unfortunatly Tahoe is out of the question at this point.

Nice tape job on David's downhill machine Sirie! Radness.
David -- Don't think I can make it due to work mid-day sunday, and hanging with my son, Jackson, saturday. What are your job hours? I could schedule major S.C. session time tuesdays, thursdays or fridays. I start work at 4pm both days.
Maybe do some schooling on Bonny Doon Road? It's epic, right here, and we should have at least be able to get down the sucker. Come down and we'll do a recon drive and maybe run a couple of the crux sections...

Wow Mike!
I've often thought about working at a bike shop. Have some quals. Keep the faith brother, the economy might suck, but we're all in this together. I can't believe how many people I know who aren't making near the wage they made 2 years ago.
Will you be able to make the Worlds with your new job? Hope so.

Well Miko, I'm actually starting a new job this morning at Mike's Bikes in San Rafael. Since it's retail, I'm going to be giving up at least one day a weekend from now on. At a 'cost' of having at least one day off during the week, so surfing might be better this Fall!!!

Brady, the only time that works is on a board in the 29-30" range. For instance, on my 34"...my feet are where I described below and my back toe is about a foot away from my front heel. As I said however, sometimes I turn my back foot to more perpendicular to the center of the board for extra drive on heelside turns. Chaulk outlines are a great idea. You learn a lot with that.

Here`s a number learnt to me by John Gilmour...
Try to tap the heel of your front foot with the toe of your rear foot.
I, myself, have trouble with this technique bit I think the purpose is to set your feet in a ckose semi0parallel stance.
Naturally I tend to fall into the ole surf stance, and use more upper body movement than I should.
Another trick of John`s is to chaulk your feet`s outline on your board where they should be, and see if you can attain a proper stance then.

Dude, keep doing what you're doing. Don't worry about technique unless you really get into it and maybe consider racing. I only say that because the first time I skated cones I realized I wanted to race and began really studying myself and those around me to become technically more sound. It helped skating around great skaters like Jack Smith and Paul Dunn, but frankly it only helped because I eventually wanted to be able to beat them....racing.
Is that random of what? Hey, it's been a long day of skating today and if any part of this seems vague or just plain dumb.....let me know.

I wouldn't say that but definately get your feet as much on the board as you can. Stay away from your pool skating stance for slalom.....you'll just hit cones with your heels. I would guess you are talking about right with a 60 degree to the center line of the board. Don't try to modify your stance in one session either. Go at a little at a time. You'll also find you use different stances for different courses. You'll find what works best for you for sure.
