I think that a long fast GS course like that benefits from good roll-speed. Brent primarily used 75mm wheels and experimented with some others, and I used four different types of 76mm wheels in the last 3 races. Something tells me that I won't be using 76mm wheels in the TS though...

i was on the hill for everyone chaput took.his board stuck around those turns like glue and he was way out over his board.i believe he was running 77mm wheels too.i think the increased traction, plus roll speed/momemtum gave him the edge.you had to be on fire to beat brent saturday, but what if brent had 77mm wheels?cf

I'm with you WT... I think that pushing all that extra contact patch around might be a hassle, except on courses that are open enough to take advantage of extremely ballistic speed on just the right course. I also think Chris is just plain fast, and recovering from his injuries of the last two years, and getting back to top form. In the end, I feel it's still about making your gear choices and pushing them to thier limits. Everyone who's doing that will be finding themselves at the top of the heap battling it out.
Karate Monkey eh? I'm digging my Giant STP hardtail, and might just convert it to single speed when I get a chance. Jackson and I have been dirt jumping 2-4 times a week now and are starting to fly over the gaps and do x-ups. Every now and then I have a foot pop off for a one-footer as well. Maybe I can do it intentionally soon!
Sound like there's going to be a little B-Street slalom thing this saturday am, if'n y'all know what I mean... MJ, SKing, Ravi, Joy, etc.

Watching six wheels race

I saw the six-wheeler running at Pump Station and I just wonder what difference it makes?
Through three runs, Kosick, Carrasco and maybe Hackett (I know Hackett was in the top three after two runs) were ahead of Chaput. Then on his fourth run Chris just went balls out and got down the course faster. Did the Six Wheeler allow Chris to go faster? Or did he just push into the course like a madman and get a fast time? Would his time had been slower on four wheels?
I'm not doubting Chris and trying to explain away his win. He had the fast time. What I don't know, though, is that two extra wheels and another truck made the difference. He improved with more runs. Well, I think most everyone does that who's in decent condition and doesn't get wasted climbing back up the hill.
Of course, then comes the argument, "well, let's see the same skater run the course on four wheels and see if he's slower." That won't work. Once a racer (in just about any sport) has it in his head that a certain set up works (and Chris's does work,) then he'll be naturally tentative to make a switch.
Chris has won two races on a gnarly course on a fast hill. There's no denying that. I just don't see in the numbers, though, where the six-wheeler is a miracle machine compared to the fact that Chris is getting faster no matter what the set up.
If Brent, Richie or Dave switch to six wheels and then keep their margin ahead of Chaput, then I'll be more inclined to think it's a real innovation. In the meantime, though, I have to think that Chris just went faster because he went faster, not because of far-out technical avantage.

D-uh, blew the last post...
anyhoo, you sold your old geared mountain bike huh? I have heard of the Karate Monkey, as a matter of fact I was going to built one for myself. Good call! I don't know if the idea of a six wheeler being old or new, but you're right when you say..."theyre ugly."

I got some good leads yesterday for a clothing sponsor and shoes. It was a good good show. We got a lot of work done. Looks like the 6 wheelers were on. I'll be there next time to take a shot at them! I'd love to see a tight course running down that hill at an upcoming race. Any takers?

Mayseyyyy! It was bigger and faster than last time! We heard from the ASR people crowding the course that the show was lame --hope you found something they missed. Those Silverfish guys were out there, Juice mag, Maria Carrasco with her vid camera. A lot of exposure. Skaterbuilt sure wasn't left out. I rode mine!!!

...no MAYSEY for PumpStation this time...he will be at the ASR workin' it in order to secure himself with endorsements and sponsorships...
...he might've shown up-but, his sponsor was left outta the mix...again...
...so, maybe his sponsor will have their own Outlaw Races this year-invitation only.

HACKETT - BLACK LEATHER RACING
wrote in from

(68.66.nnn.nnn)
Back in 2001 there were alot of Race Teams. Now it's 2006, and most of those teams have dissolved, or just faded away...
BLACK LEATHER RACING (BLR) is not a team. It is a "RADIKAL COLLECTIVE" of all around Skateboarders.
For that reason, BLR remains stronger and faster than ever.
SSS is dead. One by one, BLR has outlasted every race team on that tomb stone; SSS being the last to fade.
Why did this happen? Because deep down inside Chicken and Richy have always been down with BLR!
Maysey has the Ring, and Mitchell is just straight BadAss on any terrain!
BLR will Dominate 2006!

It's a joke man! But partly truth as Chris actually did have a jersey... or was that a photoshopped jape? Anyway, you'll all work it out on the race course won't you?

Pump It Up 2

I believe this is what Miko is talking about.
The next Pump Station I'll be riding on two or three different boards, each set up with some new and different wheels. I don't know if I'll run that 6 wheeler again, a different one, or none at all. Most of us tended to "peak" on our second or third runs, so I'll have figure out when to run what. I want to use stock production wheels and prototype trucks with big green bushings. It's a nice hill to experiment on, fairly steep, smooth asphalt. I hope the there's no real wind to speak of like last time. I'll either try AB/AB/AB, or ABC/ABC testing for the first 6 runs and see how things go.
The ASR is happening that weekend, so I'll be bringing a ton of product down for those who want to try stuff out. I'm sure it will be another great race.

Like we were saying, it's not about defining what a skateboard is. It's about defining what gear you want to have at a race. Race organizers guided by the racing public should decide.
An organizer could say, "Sign up for the unlimited category or for the 4 wheel / standard category. The number of entrants in each category determines the relative time devoted to each on race day." Still sound good, 4 hours later?
That was a fun sesh by the way. Love that spot.

Don't make me laugh Tim 'TacomaCaliStud'.
First off, 'TacomaCaliStud' get your nose outta Chaputs butt and let me make a suggestion to you before you open mouth/insert foot again on this board...you should give a read as to what's really being disscussed on this page and on the Slalom forum to get up to speed on the arguement/discussion. Second, who the frick are you anyway 'TacomaCaliStud'?
Nice email address...boy!
