Wouuf.

well thats as much a red herring as turning my closing questions into a USA vs Canada thing, i have more friends in Canada then i do fingers and toes. I love my frostbacks!
all i did was ask you some questions and seeked your opinion/side of the matter out of pure curiosity. i never accused you of anything or took anyones side other than stating that i thought it was funny. i'm entittled to my own opinions and my own sense of humor even if its not popular. Had you not replied over a week or twos time, i would have said something along the lines of your poo not stinking, but you did reply! i really think its funny how worked up the silva phish crowd gets!!! lol !!! come on 47 posts in less than 24 hours, that to me is just about as funny as da kine.
in all seriousness, if you dont mind indulging me, if you banned the ad the first time, why didn't you ban the followup ad pointing back to the first ad???
(Michael, i'm going to reply/ask you on the phish as well. i'll also explain in more detail as to why....) shoots

About Canada,
I would say that Canada is a whole different world from the U.S. but I would be lying through my teeth. (OK, in my opinion, French Canadians are from Mars) I am active duty U.S. Navy, I have three people that work for me as Canadian citizens enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and a whole slew of others, who protect the vital interests of both of our countries with pride. Most Canadians I talk to have just as much pride in our country as they do thier own, and they all feel the same fears as Americans do. Hell, I am seeing a woman from Vancouver, (man can Vancouverites throw a party.) Life there, is really close to life here, and I don't understand the whole "border" thing to begin with (with the exception of the Province of Quebec "in my opinion".) I like Canada, it pretty, most folks there have good dental plans, and (with the exception of french canadians, once again "in my opinion",) I haven't met a Canadian that was any different than any American I have ever come across. So with all other Bulls#@! aside (no, i'm an American and i'm not ex-patriating,) I'm going out to skate, see you ladies in my dust.

Ah, the Dregs ad...
Firstly, it ain't about free speech. That's a red herrring, my friend. It's my magazine, and as publisher, I have the final say in what goes in there...including ads. Every magazine has a rights and responsibilities code that they adhere to (this means they reserve the right to REJECT any AD)
When I showed this ad to my other editors, they were of the same opinion I was: it was not appropriate for the magazine. So we rejected it. I told them I would run it if they put a huge black bar over the turd...but they did not want to do this...speaking of turd
Why is this ad not appropriate?
Well, here are a few of my reasons:
1. it's tasteless..running a huge TURD (2" x 5") is f**King GROSS. It would have worked in Big Brother...but it doesn't work in CW. I don't care if taking a huge sh*t is the most natural thing in the world to you... I don't care if you have kids with frequent bowel movements that are perfect in size and stature...I don't care if you worship feces...IT AIN"T GOING IN CW. It's the same reason why there is NO NUDITY in the mag and the fact that we censor the F word. I do allow the word sh*t....which, I guess in this case is pretty ironic.
2. our readers range from 5 years of age to over 55. Perhaps if our readership was over 18, it would be a different story, but again, I point you back to my first point.
3. Above and beyond these two points, however, lies the other issue. The fact is that this ad is a double edge sword...or this case, a double edged crap...if you read between the lines on this ad, it equates all other boards as crap. I am sorry, but why would I want to have an advertiser call all my other advertisers crap.
This is not a case of censorship. If you really want to stir the pot, why not ask some of the other mags why they didn't run the DON'T DO IT AD from Consolidated. After all, there is not one rude thing about that ad...there is no crap image, there is no nudity or swear word...no, the problem is that Nike writes big fat checks to some of these magazines and they don't want to slit their own throats. Do I blame them? No, of course not. They have the right to reject any ad.
And on a final note, this Canada vs. USA thing...I live in Canada...the mag is printed in Canada...there are occasionally stories about Canada BUT...even if I lived in the USA, right there in San Diego, I still would have NOT printed the ad.
Hope this clarifies my position.

why was the dregs ad banned? i checked out there web site expecting to see some half naked girls or a marijuana bud? its only a piece of poo and the context was funny and clever. would you rather not stand on the board???? are you pro - poo???? does your poo not stink or something???
ever heard of free speech? i know its a Candian mag and maybe i'm ignorant to your constitution of rights but isn't the majority of your ads aka majority income and distriubution to and from the United States??? i know it was during the International Longboarder days, you told me so. has it changed that much???? or does the poo just lack soul???

I think the evolutions dvd, is well, evolving... and I am really glad it is getting out there...feel free to make copies for pals.
as for the mag, I think we are evolving with that too...things take time when you are dealing with smaller budgets...sure, it would be great to have an injection of HUGE CASH, but then, I don't think the mag would be the same.
Money talks...I know...but there is something to be said for slowly, but surely building things up from the ground.
Marion, I am trying to get it together for the Cup...but a few things have come up...I know that Bud Stratford, my marketing guy is coming down.
I will email you with an update.
cheers Michael

Hey Michael, our weather here in Albuquerque is still nice. Our mornings have been cool, but the afternoons and evenings are still warm with mild winds and the occasional thunder storm. I hope it stays nice for the Sandia Challenge this weekend--I've never been before and my son is really stoked as well! Anyway, plenty of boarding left for us this season. Having come down from Anchorage, AK to the desert southwest, my potential worst riding conditions here don't even come close in comparison with what I would be dealing with up north--although dodging moose and snow machines might make for some interesting riding!

Warren, ASR and my thanks...

It was a bittersweet ASR. Obviously, the news of the passing of Warren Bolster really shook me. I think it puts a number of things in perspective.
I am so very grateful to a number of people who helped out with Warren's book...it was a team effort and I realize that I was right to do it when I did it...because now, sadly, we would be unable to do this book.
I contacted Warren via introductions from Laura (Thornhill) Caswell and Dan Gesmer. A few years back we printed some of his gorgeous pipe photos in the mag. This led to the book idea and his becoming Editor Emeritus of CW. Warren shipped me dozens of photos, I chose the best ones. Unfortunately, some of Warren's photos have either been lost, damaged or never returned. Over time, the book came together with Warren writing detailed captions of the memories that each photo brought back. It was painstaking work. Dan came on board to edit. Thanks to the financial support of Kevin Harris of Ultimate Distributors, the book was able to be published.
I think that anyone who is reading this post/forum realizes they were affected by Warren Bolster's work. Warren's passing requires us to take a step back and realize that what we are creating here - a community...a stoke...a photo...a dvd clip...any type of contribution really - truly does make a difference. Perhaps our contributions won't be on the same scale as Warren, but they will make their mark.
So for those of you who contribute to this forum, for those who contribute Concrete Wave (ie Sumdum) or the evolutions dvd (Fabrice) or the books (ie Sean Cliver and Glen Friedman) my thanks. Your contributions make a HUGE difference in my life. THANK YOU.
On a lighter note, the Jay Adams book launch went off great. The book has touched a nerve and I am pleased to report that folks seem really touched by Kent Sherwood's photos and Jay's captions.
We have a lot more cooking...for now, back to my 200+ emails

Warren Bolster will be surely missed, but never forgotten. He gave many of us hundreds of great surfing and skateboarding images, which turned into lasting memories. I was lucky enough to meet him, a couple of years back and thank him for all of his contributions to the realm of skate/surf photography. May you rest in peace, Warren.
Godspeed, Sumdumsurfer
