I was out and about the other day and saw that the local book store is now carrying CW! Could this have anything to do with a slalom demo we did at that shopping center back in Oct.? Most assuredly not, but heck, it's a fun thought, isn't it?!?!?
Nonetheless, the interest in skateboarding in addition to tech/flip trick stuff is growing even on a local level.

Palmer,
I think that MB would prefer a blond about 5ft 8 or so for his date. Not too young along with witty reparte and life experience to avoid those dreaded lulls in the conversation.......
MB...Sound good eh???

yes, of the two covers, one was part of a collection of late 80's work that VCJ did....the other cover has never been seen anywhere. I liked both...and since this issue is a tribute to VCJ, I thought it would be kinda fun to publish both...so I did.
the interview with him is a trip!

Awesome Vernon Courtland Johnson covers! First cover is Escher-esque techno-future-dude skating old-school style with swap meet exploding in background! Second over feels like Van Gogh collaborates with Escher while Pink Floyd music plays during a meteor shower! I guess this will increase retail sales of Concrete Wave-- with VCJ fans buying the other cover they did not get from subscription. Will likely invite some first-time buyers in the book stores too.

Happy Holidays to everyone from Albuquerque! We're going through our second round of snowstorms this week and I think I'm suffering from longboarding withdrawals!! My board actually looks lonely propped up in the garage all by itself(extremely long sigh). Hey Chris, do you happen to have any Flywheels with studs or mini-chains?!

1. the "blanks = blank future" campaign will not only fail, it will make the problem worse
2. the true extent of just how HUGE niche skateboarding is will finally be unmasked...some folks will be shocked, others will shrug...and laugh
3. some of the major street skate companies will fire pros and lay off workers and try in vain to stop the impending catastrophe...it will be tough times, for sure
4. Slalom, despite the best efforts of most of the skate media to bury it, will continue to thrive. Hey, ostriches, get your heads out of the effin sand!
5. Transworld ad pages will shrink...
6. Powell to release a KICKASS book by end of 2007...30 + years...and still rocking...
7. Chad Muska will marry some B-celebrity...and then launch a line of cologne. Sales will be less than expected.
8. Concrete Wave will head on out to New Mexico and Colorado in a 2 week blitz. Palmer will be suitably impressed by Brooke Jnr...
9. life, as we know it, will continue to rock...

Boards for Bro's

In keeping with the Christmas spirit, Ed Womble and some other skaters have put together - in spite of the fact that a peice of skate history is going to be destroyed, aka The Bro Bowl - a call out to donate any unused boards, trucks, wheels, decks anyone wishes to donate to the Boards for Bro's cause. These dontations will go to the kids, who are not financially well off and often stand by gaping or begging for rides from skaters with fewer financial pressures ( I'm trying to be politically correct here LOL ). They will be handing out the donated equipment on the 23rd of December. It's being done as a good cause. No money will exchange hands, no prizes awarded, no photo ops with names, etc. Giving these kids donated setups that are not new, might seem like a 'less than' situation, but it's not. It's a way of passing on the stoke in a manner without any angst, iow, as it should be. Rather than ask for money iow, they're just saying,"Hey, if you've got some stuff you don't use and likely never will and can part with it without any angst, send it and we'll put it to good use." Pretty reasonable imho.
Anyway, if you're interested...here's the addy to mail any of your cast offs, or stuff sitting around in your garage. Again, it does not have to be new. Further information can be obtained through floridaskater.com
Skatepark of Tampa Attn:Boards for Bro's 4215 East Columbus Dr. Tampa,Fl.33605
Recall this comes on the heels of our best efforts to stop the destruction of the Bro and coming to the sad realization that the battle is over and we lost. It's a done deal. The Bro is going to go bye-bye. I think, given this news, that the local skate community here is responding in a way that speaks volumes of just how pure the love for skating is and appreciation for all the Bro has meant to skaters here since 1979.
Much props to the bro's who came up with this idea. Maybe some of you could repeat it in your own areas too, if you haven't already. Spread the stoke, the madness, the sickness, the vibe...whatever you call it, spread it like the plague LOL

Mike, I think the retrun to roots has already happened. In many places there is much more going on. I don't know about every place, but I know in the SW and NW US skating has become more diverse. Older riders have always been around, especially in the NW. That is nothing new. I think the biggest change will come from the market place as vendors diversify the products they offer. This makes sense with the rise in popularity of racing and the like. I am not sure how big the racing element will become. It is just not appealing to a lot of people. I know that park skating is really the big market now. Especially as good parks that have elements of street and tranny keep getting built. Racing is still sort of fringe and I expect it to stay that way. In no way am I saying one racing sucks or anything, I just know from my years skating that people just don't seem that into it. Yes it is more popular now than it has been. I just don't see it getting super huge. Ollies will still dominate for a few more years I think.

Just for fun, I thought I'd go back to my first post... it was 3 1/2 years ago...any thoughts? I think that four years after Dogtown and Z Boys, we are on our way....but what say YOU? ***************************************** ******************** On 4/25/2003 michael brooke wrote
Greetings all... I'd like to kick this off with my theory on change within skateboarding. I think we are on the cusp of change. I think I have figured out the pattern...your comments and questions are welcome.
Cadillac urethane wheels hit shops in 1974, by 1977 there are millions of skaters worldwide
1981 Thrasher Magazine founded by 1984, the industry is starting to be healthy once again
1988 World Industries founded by 1991, the company has created a whole new skate environment
1995 Extreme Games launched by 1998, skateboarding has become very popular once again
2002 Dogtown and Z-Boys hits theaters and is soon released on DVD and VHS The skate renaissance has already started prior to 2002, but the Dogtown film is a watershed moment.
Over the next 18 to 24 months, I believe you will see a real return to roots: more shops will start to carry different types of boards, more pool, slalom and freestyle competitions will be held. Skateboarding will expand from just its ollie based persona. Variety will stretch not only from types of terrain or equipment, but types of rider. Older skaters (18+) will gain in numbers and female participation will increase.
Or will it? Your thoughts are welcome! ************************************* *********************************

You know, the more I think about this idea, the more I really dig it... I just don't know if Primedia would be interested...if enough people send them email, well then, perhaps something could happen
whatever the case, we'd be down to promote this ...
