Illegal skating
On 8/15/2003 Duane wrote in from (64.223.nnn.nnn)

I just read a NYT article that implied that many smaller suburban towns are outlawing things like skateboarding and other street recreation, in an effort to be "kid-unfriendly", because the people there don't want to pay for more kid's schooling, should they move into the area. Interesting take that I hadn't thought of before.

Make it a road trip movie... "Poolsharks".

As for all those millions on a park...
miles of ditches, with bee-yoo-ti-ful bowls in all the corners. Send the money to Wally, let him build the real "Magic Mountain".

Geezer-X; I admit it... gotta go rent it now.

Michael, I just happened to get a chance to run over to the new park in Mississuaga this afternoon while I am in town on business. The bowl is pretty good, but someone needs to get the word out to these kids that old school is back! I was riding my Bulldog and no one knew what it was. I let one kid ride it who was fairly decent and when he gave it back he had a huge smile on his face.

Lot's of people at the park but 99% were focused on the street course.

Just gave me more time to ride.

skate movie
On 8/13/2003 willieleon wrote in from (162.93.nnn.nnn)

I think a mainstream movie with skateing could work, if it is crafted right. One where skating is an important backdrop to the film, but not the focus of the film. Look to "Big Wednesday" as an example with surfing. Great movie, didn't exploit the surfing, but still the surfing was an important part of the movie.

30m skatepark
On 8/13/2003 Brad wrote in from (20.137.nnn.nnn)

hmmmmm. All concrete, except for some wooden bowls...a huge technical launch ramp for downhill runs, electronically timed, with highest speed recorded....same for slalom. Video capture of any trick/run/comp that a skater would want. Oldschool pools with tiles and coping...several....Concrete ditches...Reservoirs....damn, those are fun for screwing around! a huge pro shop and cafeteria (not snack bar)......Indoor, of course for year round skating, 250,000 sq feet in area, A/C all around, and a killer sound system, and last but not least a sign above the entrance: no wheels less than 60mm allowed!

The Movie
On 8/12/2003 -JC- wrote in from (63.184.nnn.nnn)

I think it would be difficult to put together an "acted" movie on skating (look at the results to date).
Stubbs idea is what most companies do now (Flow, for example).
But to actually "act out" a day, week, month, year, LIFE of a skater would be hellish to write, and worse to direct.
We live on spontanaity, our sessions come at a moments notice. We (normally) don't blow things up, rob banks, or get crucified. How do you get a bunch of actors to relive that in a 97 minute film? Without it being a documentary?

Having trouble grasping the moment? Watch "Gleaming the Cube" again. Straight.

The Grind
On 8/12/2003 Stubbs wrote in from (65.69.nnn.nnn)

That movie is soooo NOT what skating is about. The premise is sooooo stupid. If they want to make a movie about skating it should be done documentary style. Pick a crew from say 4 or 5 different cities and follow them around. Here's a real life scene out of my skateboard movie:

A couple of weeks ago, me and about 5 others wanted to hit the parking garage. It was a Tuesday night so we sat at the local 'Bar of Smoke' til we thought security for the garage had gone home. Upon our arrival just a bit after 10pm, the guy is still there. I have a card to access the garage but we had two car loads of guys plus boards. It was decided that me and Steve would drive into the garage and unload the boards and then Steve would drive back out, retrieve our bros and bring them up to the top, all under the security of the access card. Steve and I get half way up the garage and my cell phone rings. It was the other half of our crew: "Stubbs! Ripper started a fire! We're going back to the bar!"

"STOP THE JEEP, STEVE!" I yelled as I jumped out and peered over the edge of the 8th floor. Sure enough, there was a strip of grass between the parking lot and the street about 40 feet in length and about 3 feet wide, containing one parking meter with flames about 3 feet high. Apparently Ripper lit a smoke, threw the match out and POOF! Needless to say, we did not get to skate but we did a lot of laughing back at the bar and ended up skating a painted curb out front.

My wife says "And these are your friends. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

This is real life. This is skateboarding.

Even the kickflippers are hating on Grind.

"Let's gather together all of the most
cartoonish stereotypes of what skaters are like
( because no one cares what they're *really* like ),
and sell it to the 12 year olds. We'll make
loads of dough off those suckers."

GRIND & MEL GIBSON'S MONEY
On 8/12/2003 michael brooke wrote in from (209.183.nnn.nnn)

For those of you who may not know, there is a new skate film coming out this week. Entitled "Grind" it looks like a cross between "Road Trip, Jackass and the 70's cult classic Skateboard ." I doubt we'll see anything of merit...but you never know....hopefully, it sucks less than Thrashin'

Mel Gibson has just sunk 30 million (of his own money!) into his film about Jesus Christ.

This got me thinking, what if we could go back in time and convince Mel to put 30 million into a skateboard film...but not one aimed at teenagers...one aimed at visitors to the NCDSA...

what would be the premise of your film
describe an opening scene...

here's my take...
we open to the blaring sounds of the Clash...(who else..)

it's 1980...our main character, Dave Phillips, age 17, hears the news that the family is moving west from Minnesota to LA...Seems like his dad has got the big promotion.

Dave runs up to his room, which we see is covered in posters from SkateBoarder Magazine.

That's all I leave you with...you can build on my idea or create your own.

And by the way, if Mel Gibson reads this post, can I have a few thousand dollars to run a few extra copies of CW?

why I didn't get to Montreal
On 8/12/2003 michael brooke wrote in from (209.183.nnn.nnn)

OF COURSE I WANTED TO BE IN MONTREAL!

I had to be at my birthday party instead.
My aunt and uncle came over from the UK.
My parents drove in....my kids and their cousins destroyed the house. We ran out of pina colada's...
It rained...the house was hot and filled with people.

I still had fun though!

Believe, me, I would have loved to be in Montreal!
send me a shot or two - we will definitely cover this story...next year, I will be there...but don't hold it on Aug 10 or 11...cuz next year I turn 40, and I get to repeat the same deal...
