I think it's a bit late for woking, the new park will supposedly be opened next month. I'm thinking I should put some effort into whatever happens next in Guildford.
The big problem is that the councils seem to be hoping that the whole thing will go away in a few years and don't want to commit to concrete. I was talking to someone at Hengrove (lovely new concrete park in Bristol) and apparently, it only cost about 15% more than the new park at Farnborough. I bet they spend the difference on repairs in the first three years. Maybe old gits like me getting involved will help convince TPTB that skating isn't about to go away.

Alright folks?? Howzit? I'm John and I have recently moved to the skate mecca of Woking(!) most people here think a skateboard is some weird banana shaped thingy so I'm hoping to reach some people who like to slide rather than shred, also I have a spot that just has to be skated, The shopping centre at brooklands still retains one of the banking curves from the old racetrack, we're talking an easily 15 foot bank wich should theoretically be skateable, any one wanna come hek it out?? (I'll drive!)

Uniform Skatepark construction have a desrved reputation for not only knowing what they are talking about but also attending meetings in order to show skaters what is possible. They can advise councils from design to construction and can put a corporate hat on when needed. Who designed the Bude park because there were absolutely no lines to be had...nuts!???????????

consultations are good if you have a range of ages, abilities and interests. too often they are wil local youth groups and the kids say 'ledges', 'manual boxes' and 'stairs' etc. whether they can actually use the stuff or not, thats what they see in the mags so thats what they say they want. theres a great quote on skateoregon.com... 'Why do we allow these facilities to be so strongly influenced by the whims and fantasies of 13 year olds? If you want a super skate park, hire professionals.'
however the benefit of consultations is that you can use them to persuade people, especially if they do not know about the new generation of US parks. simply take piccies along, you'll be amazed at the reaction.
p.s. also worth getting the council to talk to US design companies, you may find they are better value than many UK landscape architects (who generally know nothing about skateparks anyway)!!!

New Park - Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes is currently in the planning stages for a new skate park, and it would appear that they have gone about it in a reasonably responsible manner. Firstly the announced an open informal meeting to collect ideas - and had over 200 people turn up. Feelings and discussions ranged from styles, materials and by-laws. Subsequently more meetings have taken place (still open) where finer detail has been discussed. Things planned so far: Skate trail linking Train station to park (MK get a lot of commuting skaters due to our wonderful marble ledges - if you are a kick flipper at least!) Snake runs Bowly sections and the ususal rampy street stuff
However these are all plans and nothing is firm till it is cast (opefully in concrete!)
Budget has however been allocated from what I undersand

g7enn, or anyoine in the same situation, don't settle for another modular street park being thrown up, start hassling people. go to the local council website and email everyone in depts that look like they'd be involved (sports, recreation, community regeneration etc). look in the local papers for names if theres an article where parents are calling for a park. thing is these parks are decided upon by people who generally no zero about skateboards, the design is then made up by consultation (ofter part of the funding process) with 11 year olds. if you can get an 'in', use persuasive arguments for concrete (give examples of thre new parkes being built in the US, cite the tourism value of a unique park like that, mention that new school parks are available elsewhere, show the 11 year olds piccies of bowled parks and watch their jaws drop! you should find the council, and councillors, will listen.
i've just gone through all of the above, and hopefully we'll be getting something truly amazing (just a few more funding hurdles to go and a bit of consultation using the plans we now have). i know for sure if i'd sat back we'd be looking at modular street obstacles.
in the process i've built up a stack of images, and two powerpoint presentations, that make good arguments. if you need em let me know.

Urethane tyres for wheelchairs are coming. Seriously guys, take care of yourselves. Having badly broken my ankle a couple of years ago I am fortunate that skating has helped me to heal it good. Last year when I woke up after skating I could hardly walk, now I hardly notice it at all. But you guys have it bad. Frank, sue the other drivers insurance co, or if it was the minicabs fault do them instead. Mind you know one will believe you had the seat belt on. We must be the only two out there who do that. Schtuff will be coming your way Frank.

Hi All,
First I would like to say how sorry I am to hear about Mat .I met Mat and family with my son Charlie at CP they shared popcorn he still talks about it.
Well I was well and truly on the road to recovery until this evening .
I was teaching in Greenwich and took a mini cab home as a passenger in the back with a seat belt on took a head on collision with another car. We stopped and the other car (a mum with four kids turned to talk to her kids then, turned back swerved and stepped on the gas instead of the break. Me I'm back to square one fractured hip could be another operation more titanium in me than a very expensive pair of fine trucks.
she said it was my cab drivers fault my thougtht I only thought thet drove on the right in other countries.
Still hanging in
Mat stay strong and the Nelson Clan are thinking of you..
Michael Stride your new mission should you choose to accept it please get me the Chlorine DVD and the Gravity DVD.
I may be able to sell a kidney while in hospital again to pay for them!!!
Xrays this Friday Gonades (may be spelt wrong) to be nuked but I have a 3 year old and a 2 year skateboard posse in the making
Peace and respect

I live near Woking, most of my skating is at Stoke Park in Guildford, it's small but has a nice 5' mini and the street section is cool in that it can be pumped and carved at a decent speed. Me, my kids and Ross (who posts here sometimes) and his kids tend to skate there most saturday mornings before it gets crowded, though I don't think either of us will make it this weekend. I may be there around 9AM the next few mornings though.
A bigger, and arguably better park is at Farnborough, the 'mini' there is getting close to being a half pipe, 7' tall and near vert at the extension, very wide and with a Skatelite surface. The rest of the park is pretty cool but not as cruisable as Guildford.
There will be a new park in Woking soon though, judging by the plans, it'll be a little newschool with few interesting lines unless you can handle spine and hip transfers, which I can't...
Other than that it's get on the A3 up to London or down to Southsea if you want to skate some concrete.
As for hills, i've never seriously looked, i'd be interested in finding smooth/quiet ones myself.

Paul, the pool at the RAC was drained for quite some time about five years ago whilst engineers burrowed below to extend the Jubilee line. There were fears that continuous train disturbance may cause the pool to crack and spill its load onto the track. Whilst the RAC pool has square sides, the metro beneath is... a tube.

Seriously. The speeed of the skating was alarming. I just can't move that quickly anymore...since m'concussions.
